About Brian F.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have the equipment needed for the lesson. Once I leave, they will not have any equipment I bring to practice on. I will have my own instruments to use for demonstrations, but the student must have their own gear to practice on, whether that is amps, books, cords, instruments, etc.
*** Specialties ***
For the upright bass I use three main sources for the beginning classical student: Rabbath's new double bass method, Simandl's method for double bass, and George Vance's books for the double bass. All of these provide a lot of material for anyone in any stage of development. For jazz students I like to just start with the basic ideas for walking bass and go through the standard tunes while working on technique in one of the four mentioned books.
On bass guitar I have a series of exercises that I teach to all students to develop hand dexterity. From there I do not have any strict literature that I use, but I do prefer to teach from the book "Building walking bass lines" and "Improvisation for bass". I also take into consideration what the student wants to learn (musical style and what their goals are) and tailor the lessons to each student.
