I teach elementary students mostly by the Suzuki Method. I also but an emphasis on theory.

Lesson Details

My curriculum is a made up of both the Suzuki Method and an emphasis on theory. Most violin teachers utilize only the Suzuki Method. However, the Suzuki Method does not teach theory until at least year two and is mostly ear training. I feel that not exposing my students to theory is like teaching them to read without knowing the alphabet. In other words, its counter productive to their musical education. My teaching style is fairly laid back, but that should not be confused with apathy. If my ... student is accomplishing the goals that we have set together by practicing normally and trying their best, I reward them handsomely. On the other hand, if the student is disrespectful and not doing their best, there are consequences. I am very friendly and energetic, but very strict when it boils down to practicing. I also like to expose my students to music where the violin is exerted in different genres to show that it is not only a classical instrument, but one with limitless range. Most students within a six month period can be expected to have completed at least half of the first Suzuki book and also be music literate. How much and how quickly a student will learn is entirely up to the dedication of the student. I can only do my best to encourage students, the other half has to come from the student's own initiative.

I was born and raised in Houston Texas where I attended Spring Branch Middle School. There, under the phenomenal direction of Shauna Shaw, I learned to play the violin at age 11. I continued with orchestra at Memorial High School's rigorous program. In both programs, I competed in Solo and Ensemble competitions and was awarded metals every time. After high school, I attended Midland College where she was honored to be a cheerleader. As a cheerleader, I had the opportunity to work with children ... in the community. I returned to Houston to attend Houston Community College where I continue to study violin performance and music education. Since my return, I have had two years experience teaching violin at River Oaks Elementary through a company called Elite Music and Fine Arts. During the summer of 2011, I helped create a music immersion summer camp with Elite Music and Fine Arts, where students (violin, viola, piano and guitar) experienced a rigorous and fun curriculum of theory, technique, music appreciation, and both group and sectional rehearsals. Each student performed at least one solo, a group sectional piece, and an all-camp performance. I have also had extensive private, in home lessons with over 6 successful students. My true passion in life is to share the gift of music and show students how expressing yourself through music is a brilliant asset in life.
