    About Betty K.

DANCE- PLEASE NOTE: I DO teach children, I'm not going to pay $20 that this site asks of me to do a background check in order to get minor clients! My day job is a nanny, of course my background is clean. See here for my nanny profile: https://www.care.com/p/bettyk266/cc I'm a well-rounded dancer who has studied disciplines including African, breakdance, hip hop, modern, bellydance, capoeira, yoga, and house dance since 2006. I focus on the ability to "listen" and hence enhance your musicality as a dancer. Having trained in massage therapy, I am also good at studying your body patterns and help you work on changing dysfunctional body patterns so that you look and feel good when you dance. So many teachers just try to teach their own style without acknowledging the students' physical and mental qualities and limitations. I will honor your body and mind while building/increasing your dance vocabulary. I am able to help you become a great freestyle dancer who can dance to any kind of music. My expertise is in house dance, a club- and social- dance that has roots in breakdance, jazz, ballet, African, and tap. It is done to house music, which matches the beat of the human heart and so is the most soothing yet invigorating form of dance music. It is often confused with hip hop and breakdancing, and while they do overlap, they are separate genres in the urban/street dance world. A brief outline of my experience in House: -Workshop with Meech from France, winner of Juste Debout House category -Studied with Ritchie Ramirez of Culture Shock LA -Workshop with Jojo Diggs of Soulshifters -Classes with Lyanne Brooks of Soulgasm Hawaii/Housing Project 360 -Boston house scene 2007 -LA house scene 2008 -Culture Shock San Diego: Monday Night Love House Sessions 2008 -Assisted in National Dance Week Hawaii 2011 which hosted legendary Ejoe Wilson -Organizer of the first House Dance Workshop on Maui, Hawaii 2011 -Organizer of House & Experimental Dance Seattle FB group 2011-2012 With time, you will be comfortable and proud dancing at night clubs, which often play house music, or wherever your heart desires! I also teach hip hop to beginners in a way that is natural and non-intimidating. I have a huge music selection which includes child-friendly hip hop music! I am a mother myself and have worked with children and teens for a long time. When selecting a teacher for your child, her character is of utmost importance, and I am that person who your child can not only learn dance from, but look up to as a role model :) I can provide lessons near my location at a free public venue (ie. park, community center), or at your location at a rented or free space. My experience is outlined below: International District Hip Hop Day Organizer 2004; 40 youth in attendance 3-Day Hip Hop Empowerment Workshop Facilitator 2004 Hualien, Taiwan Aboriginal Youth Dance Movement Counselor & Instructor 2006 Hualien, Taiwan Work-study at Dance Complex 2007 Cambridge, MA Cleaned studio space & assisted with yard work in exchange of classes Improvisational Modern Dance Performer 2007, Berkeley College of Music, Boston Theatre of the Oppressed workshop participant 2008, Taipei, Taiwan Debbie Allen Dance Studio Admissions Assistant 2008 Los Angeles, CA Assisted Director of Admissions with student affairs in high-profile commercial studio Kruciaal Element Dance Troupe Dancer 2008-2009 San Diego, CA Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation participant 2010 Seattle, WA House Dance Workshop Organizer 2010 Maui, Hawaii Battlezone Hip Hop Category Entrant 2011 Vancouver, BC Seattle House & Experimental Dance Facebook group Organizer 2011-2012 (Sorry, no online lessons for dance; local students only.)
