    About Belinda H.

I have been teaching private piano lessons for grammar school students at Regents School of Austin since 2010, and have also accompanied for chapel and violin students. For seventeen years, I incorporated music into my preschool classroom. I studied piano pedagogy at Shorter College (now University) in Rome, GA, receiving a BA in General Studies-education, music, and English. I have a private home studio dedicated to music lessons, conveniently located near an HEB and a Starbucks, but parents are welcomed to attend lessons! I will also travel to your home, provided that you have a piano, or at least a full-sized key, weighted, touch sensitive keyboard! :) *** Lesson Details *** I take each student as the come. Practiced or not, I take the time to go over assignments and work out the struggles with a smile. My teaching focuses on a firm foundation of the basics- note values, musical patterns, dynamics, hand and body posture, vocabulary, and an appreciation of how practice can be fun! I use colored pencils and stickers and provide many ways to present concepts. Give me a try and see what you can learn! My lesson books work on basic lessons, theory, technique and artistry, ear training, and fun performance books. I mainly use Faber and Faber Piano Adventure series, but also add in Music Tree, Color My Piano, Bastien, and home made worksheets. For young beginners, in 3-6 months they should be able to name all the white keys on the piano, know basic note values, play several 'tunes" with both hands, and be able to demonstrate many musical terms. An older student could work up to reading and playing notes on both clefs and be able to improvise with guidance, and demonstrate several techniques. The more you practice, the more you learn! All students will learn the differences of playing, practicing, and performing, "the three p's of piano." *** Studio Equipment *** Baldwin upright *** Travel Equipment *** several notebooks of music and worksheets travel metronome *** Specialties *** Classical, focusing on note-reading and understanding after developing a familiarity of patterns and sounds on the keyboard. I use see-and-say, tap-and-clap, reinforcement, and lots of stickers and colored pencils. I use an assignment notebook and encourage parents to observe a lesson now and then, and for recitals, I work with each student to choose a piece they would enjoy learning and performing.
