I will always consider myself a life-long student of music and drums. Practice, like performance, is an art; and given our limited time to apply ourselves to our craft, it is important to make the best use of that time. Essentially this process is about problem-solving; figuring out what physical (and psychological) barriers exist that are preventing you from being the player you want to be. When I work with you, my intent is to help carve out your own path for you to achieve your own goals in the quickest amount of time and with the least amount of effort! This involves (a) clearly identifying your goals and (b) incorporating specific practice techniques that will effectively help you get to where you want to be. In my own practice, I’ve tended to shy away from a heavy reliance on “book learning”; partly because I don’t have the patience, but more importantly because I find fundamental concepts and approaches to be more effective guides than licks and patterns per se. In other words, there are core factors such as timing, groove, dynamics, and phrasing that apply to all styles and situations. By working through the roadblocks preventing you from laying a strong foundation, you will be well on your way to professional excellence.
