Old time clawhammer and minstrel banjo

Learn authentic old time and/or minstrel style five-string banjo through an immersive study of traditional sources including the earliest documented banjo music from the 1800s and older Appalachian banjo players such as Wade Ward, Hobart Smith, Oscar Wright, Tommy Jarrell, Lee Hammons, and many others. Our study of old time banjo will emphasize regional styles, predominantly clawhammer, utilizing a variety of traditional tunings. Students will be exposed to ear-training, tablature, and standard written notation. Lessons and overall course of study are tailored to each student's unique interests, tastes, abilities, and goals within the range of material I cover. Having played banjo and fiddle since my teens, studied under master musicians, participated in the old time music community, and interpreted traditional music at historic sites across the Southeast, as your teacher I bring decades of experience and dedicated research to our lessons which I am excited to share with my students. Passing on this music to future generations is as important to me as learning it is to you!

    About Barrow W.

Born and raised in Virginia, I have loved the banjo and fiddle for as long as I can remember. Since my teens, I have sought out the oldest and most authentic sources of traditional music and absorbed all I could. For me, playing banjo and fiddle is about more than creating wonderful music, it is about participating in a living tradition which connects us to generations past and future and preserving the rich heritage and unique identity of a particular people and place — the soil in which that music is rooted. It has been my humble privilege to study this old music at the knee of masters like Joe Ayers, Mark Campbell, John Turner, and many others — some more and some less famous — and I am grateful for the opportunity to share what I have learned with all who love it as I do. I look forward to meeting new students and helping each discover his or her important role in the life of this deep, rich tradition, because, without you, it dies on the vine.
