    About Austin L.

I have spent my focus in my own study on performance for many years, while simultaneously developing my own personal teaching style. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Guitar Performance from the University of North Texas and I have performed in numerous states throughout the US (including a stint working in the showband for Princess Cruises). My unique way to connect with the student's musical needs comes from my emphasis on playing more than theory (at least initially) as I believe that while theory is essential, it should be a supplement, not the main course. Theory should follow practice, this seems to be the best formula for success on any instrument. *** Lesson Details *** I teach all levels and all ages, I have taught from age 5-55 (and I will be happy to take anybody older than that as well). I personalize my lesson plans to the current level of the student. I believe the fastest way to aid a student's development is to specifically work around their indidividual needs at any given time, as opposed to a cookie-cutter approach. That being said, I do have several books I recommend and things I teach that seem to help everybody whatever their current level may be. I am in the middle of the spectrum of strict and laid back as a teacher, as I believe in positive reinforcement to inspire and motivate the student, while at the same time having a concrete expectation for them to work hard to try to reach their full potential. Within 3-6 months you will have a good working foundation of knowledge including basic chords, songs, and already beginning to improvise on your instrument. *** Studio Equipment *** Spacious living room set up. *** Specialties *** I encourage students to develop their ear for a little while if they're a total beginner. I mean, obviously I don't just say "here, noodle", but i like to mix a healthy blend of showing them chords and notes and teaching them to read notation, and balancing that with an experimental attitude of exploring the instrument on an intuitive fun level. I find that this is a pattern of EVERY great musician I've ever met and also every one I've ever studied.
