Specialties

I have experience in a wide range of genres. The primary instruments that I teach are classical French horn and beginning fiddle, but I teach a broad range of styles within these categories. My violin training background is in the Suzuki Method, but I also teach fiddle classes at a folk music school in Chicago. I also perform in a jazz trio and while it is not my specialty, I usually incorporate some jazz elements and learning by ear into lessons.

Lesson Details

In your first lesson with me, we will discuss what styles of music you would most like to play and what your motives are for learning music. While some teachers teach a specific method and use the same approach for every student, I want to know whether your goal is to be a professional musician someday, or just to play for fun, before I decide how I will teach you.

The curriculum I will use depends on you. Most horn students will need an etude book (the book depends on level) and ... fingering chart if you are a beginner. Violin/fiddle students will usually be asked to get Suzuki Book 1 or one of the Mark O'Connor method books.

About

Anna is a horn, trumpet, and violin player living and working in Chicago. She was trained starting at the age of 5 in the Suzuki Violin method, and began horn studies at the age of 10. Anna received her Bachelor of Music degree from Lawrence University and a Master of Music degree from DePaul University, both in Horn Performance.

A versatile musician, Anna fiddles and plays trumpet with the Barehand Jugband, a professional band that plays shows and private events around Chicago and ... beyond. The band is the winner of the 2011 National Battle of the Jug Bands, held in Minneapolis, MN. Anna is a freelance classical horn player, appearing frequently with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago as well as the Quad City Symphony, Oistrach Symphony, and Oconomowoc Chamber Orchestra. She also performs occasionally as the singer, violinist, and horn player for a jazz trio, as well as filling out a Motown cover band in the horn section several times each year.

Anna has been teaching kids' fiddle classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music as well as teaching private horn lessons in Chicago and Oak Park. She is looking forward to meeting new students through TakeLessons!
