I primarily subscribe to the Suzuki Method (Popular method of teachning violin) as I was brought up with, the introduction of tone production (good sound), and bow technique (ability to hold the bow or stick!) emphasized earlier then orthodox. After 3-6 months students should be working on one of various beginner pieces to add to their repertoire composed by masters Paganini, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach etc., the ability to produce a solid sound, and approaching adequate intonation (playing in ... tune) in the first position.

I make an emphasis on students understanding of concepts rather then mindless repetition and rote drills.

I encourage my students to grasp the concepts involved in playing violin and learning music because when they understand the details of how practicing relates to the big picture of playing and performing and the even bigger picture of music's role in life (Joy, discipline, dedication, creativity, and so on!) ...magically, the memory of details tends to stick, motivation to practice appears, and the hunger and curiosity to learn more is stirred.

My philosophy is that 10 minutes of practice with concentrated focus in the present is better then 60 minutes of practice with a wandering mind, sometimes here, sometimes not..
