Specialties

I am trained classically so feel I have a lot of experience and can teach this the best. However, I have always been active in the theater and feel I am able to teach how to sing Broadway styles as well.

Lesson Details

I find my teaching style to be fun and engaging yet 'down to business.' I do not believe in getting stern with students who may not have as much time to practice as other weeks (we all know life gets crazy sometimes!), but I will always remind students that practice does help them succeed and find confidence in their talents. I base my curriculum on the students wants and needs. At the first lesson I get to know each student and find out their style of learning. From there, I pick out a book ... series or piece(s) to work on. I find it important to keep the students engaged and feel if they are only given one specific method book I would be straining them from their full potential. After 3 to 6 months, depending on the students dedication to their instrument, they can expect to learn the basics of theory, their instrument, and quite possibly have at least one song prepared by memory which could be performed at a recital or other special event.

I am a musician originally from Grinnell, IA. Music has always been a passion of mine and I have actively been involved in choirs and bands since the age of 8. I performed with Iowa Youth Chorus based out of Des Moines, IA which gave me opportunities to sing with Celine Dion and travel nationally and internationally. Receiving my bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in Vocal Performance, I was privileged to study under magnificent musicians such as Mary Creswell, James Rodde, Donald ... Simonson, and Simon Estes. While attending ISU I was a member of Singers, a mixed ensemble, and traveled to China and many U.S. States. Singers gave me opportunities to sing with Simon Estes and work with world renown composers such as Eric Barnum, Carol Barnett, and Dale Warland. I was given many solo opportunities at ISU which included, but are not limited to, Order of the Knoll, Cyclone Idol, the role of Adele in opera studios production of Die Fledermaus, NATS, and NCCO/ACDA Conventions.

Now based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, I am a soprano in The Singers Minneapolis Choral Artists 2011-2012 season and am teaching voice and piano lessons to students of all ages in the area.
