    About Alexander P.

Hello, my name is Alexander P., and I play the piano. I have been studying music now for 15 years and recognize that there is still much to learn. From the ages of 7-13 I focused primarily on learning and studying classical piano. At the age of 14 I switched my focus to studying jazz piano and last year finished my Bachelor's of Music degree Magna Cum Laude from Rutgers University in Jazz Studies. I am currently living in Brooklyn, NY continuing my studies in classical, jazz, and creative music and teaching students. In addition to formal education, I have attended workshops in music from all around the world from Canada to The Netherlands. I have training formally in both classical and jazz music but also thoroughly enjoy composing my own music, teaching others to compose, and being open and creative. One thing that I value in music education is learning to find your own music and express this. Music is always personal and it is different for each and every person, yet it is also universal. I am continuing to learn and discover all of what music is, and teaching music is part of the process of learning. *** Lesson Details *** In lessons I like to focus on the piano itself. I focus on teaching great habits that will allow students to play the piano with ease and with joy. I do not believe in teaching or in learning music mechanically. My philosophy is that all music learning can and should be musical. In lessons I will work with students to reach their own goals as well as share my own insight and musical knowledge. I am always open to teach students to play a specific style of music if they are interested, and am also willing to them in traditional classical and/or jazz repertoire. Most of all, I believe that teaching and learning music when done at it's best is fun, enjoyable, and a wonderful gift that lasts a lifetime. *** Travel Equipment *** I expect students to have the instrument that they wish to study. A keyboard is acceptable. *** Specialties *** I have studied privately with Sophia Rosoff in New York City. She has been the instructor of some of the most prominent pianists today including Fred Hersch, Jacob Sacks, Aaron Parks, Ethan Iverson and Brad Mehldau. The method that she teachers is based on movement and having a strong center of gravity with the piano. This method of teaching has helped many students heal from tension and injuries. It also allows a pianist to become fully immersed with the instrument.
