But even if you don't want to play professionally, maybe you just want to learn a few chords, licks, songs, for yourself, or to impress friends. That's okay too!
I welcome every level and style. I always learn something from my students.

One unique thing about me is that I've have experience in MANY different musical situations ranging from performance and education to arranging, band leading, touring, recording, and writing. I began as a punk rocker as so many people my age did. Learning the songs of the bands I listened to. As I got older and more proficient at my instrument, I began playing for the high school jazz bands and choirs in the area I grew up, beautiful Bremerton WA. When I was 16 I began my formal training at Olympic College where I played bass in several of the school ensembles as well as studied Theory, ear training, and history courses. At 18 I graduated with an AAS degree, took a year off to tour with a vocal jazz group called Jazz line, then applied to Cornish College of the Arts the following year. At Cornish I was exposed to many different world music styles and cultures as well as many different local Seattle musicians. From the time I got to Cornish in 2004 until now, I have been performing in Seattle at least once a week with different groups and usually 3-6 nights a week. Since graduating from Cornish in 2006, I have toured the US,Canada, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. I am an adjunct Jazz theory instructor at Cornish College of the Arts, Jazz director at Holy Names Academy, Have given workshops and clinics at CAL ARTS, University of Alaska, University of Nevada, CWU, and many high schools and middle schools all over the country, taught on average 30-50 students per week in and around the Seattle area. In a nutshell..... music is my life, I love it, and I love sharing it's beauty with others.

The way Lessons work with me is that I will start by asking you questions to get an idea of your musical background (if any) and an idea of what music you like to listen to. I will then ask questions about your musical goals (if any) to try to cater a lesson plan to what you with to accomplish. My first rule is that music should be enjoyable, I believe that the only way to improve is to want to improve. Depending on the length of the lesson there will be different activities and points of focus each week. Some things I focus on no matter what your goals are.....
Rhythm decoding, subdividing, and general understanding.
Ear training (chord quality, pitch matching, easy transcription)
History (how has this instrument been used before?)
Techniques specific to the styles you want to learn.
I always attempt to introduce students to new music and to get them excited about writing their own music through various exercises. (some students are more interested than others)
I never get angry or frustrated when students don't practice, I just walk them through an organized practice session so that they can see how much improvement in possible in 20 minutes (it's actually amazing)
My goal is to inspire people to play their instrument because as all good music teachers know...
The Only Way to Get Better is to Play Your Instrument..I Swear.

Many times a student will come to me after having been with another teacher for some time,.. they express to me that the other instructor did not teach them what they wanted to learn, nor did they achieve the result that they wanted. The instructor perhaps had them mired in endless exercises and studies that were great to get you ready to play music, but perhaps was not music in and of itself. I find that when I get right down to the nitty gritty of playing, and show my students a song they love and know, and get them playing their instrument, by the end of the session that they are usually thrilled and excited. In the end it makes them work harder and practice long because THEY ARE PLAYING MUSIC ON THE THEIR INSTRUMENT!!!
Certainly exercises are of paramount importance, but when you can make that connection with a student and help them to relate to the guitar the exercises are ultimately easier to them, and the experience of playing guitar an enjoyable and less alienating task.
Grab your guitar and start today!! Let's get you playing TODAY!!!!
"I am very happy with my decision to take lessons with David. In just 2 months I've gone from strumming some chords to understanding picking patterns, learning how to put together an entire song, and expanding my techniques. I am very surprised at how much technical skill I have been able to pick up in such a short period of time"
Marianne Burch, Tacoma
"I'm 46 years old and my only known talent is for overcomplicating things. I've always admired a good guitar player and wanted to learn to play myself--who doesn't?--but felt I didn't have the talent or just "couldn't do it." Then I found David Jaedyn C. and he said, 'Oh yes you can. Commit to 4 lessons up front and you'll see that you can.' I took the leap and sure enough, he had me playing blues riffs in less than one month. All I had to do was listen and do as he instructed me to and it all comes very naturally. There's no stress, just a whole lot of fun! If you're like me and you thought you couldn't play guitar, start with David and just have some fun with it. It's simple. You won't want to put the guitar down again!"
Dan DuBeau, Tacoma
I had been playing guitar for about 5 years and had only been self taught. I found myself completely stuck playing the same chords and not able to play riffs or solos at all. In my first lesson I was playing the blues with slides and hammer ons and pull offs. In a couple of lessons he had me soloing in different keys and playing riffs from guitar gods! He was able to teach me in a couple lessons what took me years trying to teach myself! He makes lessons so much fun because not only are you learning the music theory but he relates it to popular songs that you can practice along with. He also has so much knowledge in other aspects as well. He can teach you about music gear and amps or help you compose your own music. He caters to your style and taste in music and can teach you ANYTHING!
I love guitar period, but it's overtly frustrating when you have no idea where to start, or how to play at all. I went through multiple guitar instructors trying to learn how to play and each of them weren't very specific, or didn't hone in on any one thing at a time so you could really start to get it down and process it. Then we happened to find David, and he was really what we were looking for. I started picking up chords like no other, It helped, and is helping tremendously. He goes into depth about the song, letting you comprehend it a little more, and ultimately learning it quicker and better.
Skye Reed, Tacoma WA
I have had 4 different Blues guitar Teacher in the last 6 months, getting nowhere as far as really playing some Blues until I ran across David. The other teachers just wanted me to learn the pentatonic scales, Major and Minor. That took a lot of boring weeks and I am sure I will need to know those scales but I just wanted someone to show / teach me Blues chords, related to Blues songs and the timing to the chord changes so I could start playing some kind of Blues. I have had 6 one hour lessons so far with David and I am playing the Blues. The first 4 hours Dave showed me a E, A, B7 blues chord progression with some step up and step down notes. The 2nd 2 hours Dave showed me a A, D9, A7,E9 Blues chords and Blues timing with slides.
I take one hour Lessons every Thursday and in 6 hours I am playing the Blues. I picked up the guitar about 6 months ago, started teaching myself and not really getting anywhere. I am not a fast learner, about average in learning something new. Now I set a home Learning my guitar and polishing the Blues songs that David has taught me, starting to get FUN.
Les Fairley Tacoma, Wa.
Working with David has made me focus on areas of my chops that needed fine tuning. He provides the basic exercises and tools that, when practiced enough in a zen-like manner, clarifies your understanding of movement on the fret board, and makes you sound a bit more professional. Questions regarding speed, theory, notation, composition, and even string size, are ready for answer with David, which is what keeps me working with him. From begining, to intermediate, to professional levels, if you're looking to improve your chops, Dave's your guy.
Frank Lorenzo, Seattle WA
I had tried many different instructors and had become very frustrated with trying to learn guitar. Within one lesson David had me playing ACDC and RUSH! David just has a way of explaining things so that they make sense and doesn't waste any time getting right down to the nuts and bolts of guitar. A lot of other instructors spend alot of time getting you 'ready' to play guitar, but with David we got down to playing guitar right away!

Currently I teach and tutor students in the following areas: piano,
voice, choir, math and reading. I have experience working with
all developmental levels of children and adults. I offer both individual and group lessons in music and in academics.
Supportive and encouraging, I guide students step-by-step and provide a solid foundation in musicianship and technique so that students are empowered to explore any kind of music. Igniting the imagination of students and providing them with the practical tools to realize their highest potential is the basis of my teaching
My interest in music and performing arts spans a period of over 20 years with taking piano lessons, creative dramatics classes, dance as a very young child. I was very engaged with every aspect of performance. Currently I sing with the Northwest
Repertory Singers which performs throughout the Puget Sound area.
As a master teacher, I use music and art to stimulate student interest in their core subjects and have numerous methods in which to access student progress and to stimulate learning.
For teaching piano, I use the Mayron Cole Piano method which starts with learning rhythm, then keyboard notes, followed by staff notes. Each of the 3 steps is repeated in fun and engaging ways until the student feels comfortable.
We encourage group/ensemble based learning, where each student learns and plays a different part, however simple, to help keep students engaged. Board games, movement and singing are also used to help reinforce music theory concepts.
I teach individual and group piano lessons in my studio, and will travel to a students home, a community center, or to a school, to accommodate a student's schedule.

I am an actor, singer, writer, director, and lecturer. I have a Bachelor of Science in Contemporary Vocal Performance and a Master of Arts in Information and Learning Technologies. I enjoy teaching people how to perform on Saturdays out of my apartment.
*** Lesson Details ***
I cater lessons to students' individual wants and needs. I recommend potential students to get regular, 45 minute or preferably one-hour lessons on Saturdays to get the most out of their investment. You absolutely must notify me at least 24 hours before cancelling a lesson or I will be forced to charge you and no one feels good about anyone's money or time wasted. You pick most of the repertoire, but I expect you to be open enough to discover music you haven't heard before.I mainly work out of Bob Stoloff's "Scat" book for both singers and actors. Learning the basics of scat allows students of all experience levels to develop skills and learn a diverse set of music fundamentals. Whether you sing for fun or work professionally, learning how to scat will make you better.I enjoy finding repertoire from a variety of sources. I have three Real Voice books with hundreds of jazz and pop standards from the 20th century. If there's a karaoke version for a song you want to learn, I can easily work with that. With a little advanced notice, I can prepare to play chords for most songs. Otherwise, if there's no sheet music for the song and no karaoke for it either, I would recommend you either 1) learn how to accompany yourself on a portable instrument or on piano, or 2) be comfortable singing it a Capella. This last option would more than likely be for the most obscure, independent songs, but I am very flexible and willing to take extra time to transcribe chords for any song if the student feels passionately committed to it. A lot of what makes great sounding, healthy singing is breathing, attitude, and self-awareness. Everything else is pretty much a bonus. BREATHING: With weekly lessons from me, you will be exposed to breathing to the extent that you will foster a stronger psychological bond between your mind and your breathing. Great performers need this bond to take into effect while on stage. In other words, you don't want to have to struggle to remember to breathe when what you're singing has to be fantastic. I can train you for this. ATTITUDE:The natural detriments to every performer, from amateur to big budget, are the psychological defenses we use to protect ourselves in our day-to-day lives. The best vocal performers have learned how to temporarily break down these walls for the sake of their audience. It's what the audience gravitates to; the vulnerability of it all. As a coach and instructor, I will guide you into forming your own healthy attitudes about what it means to express your voice in terms of your life and the lives of those you sing or act around. Making mistakes feels so much better when you're singing for the right reasons. A singer with the right attitude understands mistakes are meant to be learned from and not avoided at all costs. To avoid failure means you're probably not reaching the potential you're looking to achieve through investing in regular, weekly voice lessons.SELF-AWARENESS:Because it is natural for us to have psychological defenses (we need them!), I find it is quite common for singers of many different experience levels to have very little understanding of what they actually look and sound like when they are singing or acting. It's not exactly the most comfortable thing to watch ourselves in the mirror or listen to the sounds of our recorded voices. There is a lot of bio physiology involved, but basically what you hear when you sing is not what other people hear. If you take lessons through me, I will encourage you to record yourself and practice in front of the mirror. You can expect to get out of your lessons what you put into the time you spend during your lessons. All I expect is for you to try and be as present as possible during your weekly lesson.
