About Me

I like to find the type of music that creates passion and interest in my students, so that they want to practice on their own. Sometimes the students don't know what type of music they like, so I expose them to a variety of music until we find what they enjoy playing.

I have a studio of 25-30 students and I hold optional recitals twice a year (sometimes more). I help students learn how to perform for others and bow for the audience. I have been teaching for over 13 years with some students making All-State Honor's Orchestra, All Southern Honor's Orchestra, and playing in college orchestras.

In 2011, I graduated with my Bachelor's of Music in Performance Violin and Viola from the Cole Conservatory of Music at the California State University, Long Beach where I also studied conducting, music theory & history, and piano.

I've had violin students attend the Orange County High School of the Arts. I helped the students prepare for the auditions and always willing to help students with their orchestra music. Many of them began at an intermediate level and were auditioning for these orchestras after 1-2 years of lessons with me.

I have taught the violins and violas at Serrano Middle School and Woodbridge High School.

I job shadowed other private violin instructors when I was in high school. I also went to a 12 week teaching seminar called, "In Search of: A Guide to Violin Excellence" where teachers talked about how to teach students to practice and learn skills that will help them jump levels in technique.

I perform frequently with the Montage Symphony, Dana Point Symphony, and Symphony Irvine as Assistant Principal Violist.

I studied the violin privately for 19 years with violin teachers from the Julliard School of Music and Ken Aiso, teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I also attended music camps like the Montecito Music Festival and Musishare's former Chamber Music Festival of 2004.

Performed as a solo violinist at the Orange County Fair in 2007 and 2008 with a Bluegrass band.

I was a concerto competition winner in 2004 and performed Haydn's Violin Concerto No. 2 with the South Orange County Chamber Orchestra as a soloist.

I teach the Suzuki method and follow the technique used by Dorothy DeLay and Ivan Galamian (former Julliard School of Music violin teachers).

I studied the piano privately for 4 years then studied piano courses in college to take the piano proficiency exam that was required for my music degree.

I am an active performer, always inviting my students to watch my concerts. I sometimes perform at the Crystal Cathedral and perform at the holiday program at the Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church. I invite students to see the annual Mahler Project where I play with the Montage Symphony a Mahler Symphony every year. I also invite students to watch musicals I perform in, Dana Point and Symphony Irvine concerts.

Violin and Viola Method Books I use:

Suzuki Method books 1-10 for Violin and 1-8 for Viola. I use the book called "Notespeller" to help students learn to read music. I also use Craig Duncan's "First Lessons" books as an alternative to the Suzuki Method. For young children, I use the Sassmannshaus Tradition: Early Start on the Violin because it has pictures and lyrics to go with the songs. It introduces a new note, string, or technique gradually and has large notes for the students to read.

materials/accessories to buy when starting lessons: a Kun Shoulder Rest to fit your violin or viola size

violin and viola scales and etudes: Intermediate and Advanced violin and viola students study scales from Carl Flesch, exercises from Sevcik and Schradiek, and etude books like Kayser, Wolfahrt, Dont, Mazas, Schradiek, Kreutzer, Fioriollo, Gavines, and Rode. We also work on shifting with position books by Whistler.

Piano: I use the Bastien Piano books and Bastien's "Scales, Chords, and Arpeggio" books. I also teach using collection books with Disney music, pop songs, and classical music. I also like the Faber Piano Adventure books for different levels and adults. I also teach solo piano music from a book called "Kaleidoscope Solos" by John George for beginning adults and older children. I also use Burgmuller, Hanon Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises, and Bartok Mikrokosmos for piano studies.

In 3 months, my students usually can read notes on all 4 strings.

Some examples of violin and viola solo works: my intermediate and advanced students study:
Bach Partitas and Sonatas for Violin
Violin Concertos (Kabalevsky, Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Bach, Vivaldi, Wieniawski)
Viola Concertos (C.S. Bach, Telemann, Stamitz, Hoffmeister)
Bach Cello Suites for Viola
