About Me

As a choral and solo singer, instrumentalist, conductor, private instructor, worship music leader, parent/child class instructor, classroom music teacher, vocal coach for auditions and performances, instructor of adult learners, I have many experiences to draw from when I teach. My early childhood training has given me insight into how children learn music, which can be applied to all music students of all ages and stages. My years of singing in many different groups and many different styles, gives me the ability to guide students with practical instruction that works for each individual voice.

Growing up in a musical family, I sang in choir at church, took up guitar, recorder and later the flute. I sang church, folk and pop music, took dance lessons for many years and listen to loads of records. In college, I studied classical voice technique, instrumental technique, took piano and flute lessons. After college I took the Orff Schulwerk certification program and taught in public and private schools. I later trained in early childhood music with Music Together and have extensive knowledge of musical development in children.

I have been an active member of The American Choral Directors Association and am a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing). I also have experiences in many kinds of singing and many music styles including: folk, classical, Renaissance, contemporary, Broadway, pop, jazz and foreign language. I have an excellent ear for diagnosing vocal issues and try to keep current on vocal techniques by attending workshops and master's classes. I love figuring out how you learn best (kinesthetic, aural, visual) and try to do it with a sense of humor, imagination and practicality. I ask lots of questions and use your feedback to find the best learning paths for you! I am open to learning any style of music you prefer and am really patience.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons are generally 45 minutes long and begin with physical warm ups for the first few minutes. Then we do vocal exercises where the voice is stretched high and low. We work on tongue, jaw position, vowel shapes and modification, vowel unification, articulation, breath support, phrasing, word placement, dynamics, music theory as needed. This often includes sight singing using The Fundamentals of Sight Singing and Ear Training by Arnold Fish and Norman Lloyd, using the Vaccai Practical Method of Italian Singing exercises, musical and lyrical interpretation of repertoire, choosing new and contrasting styles of music to support techniques learned in the warm up.

We also analyze the music, lyrics and interpretation. Students use a recording device to record their lesson which promotes at home learning and proper practice. Students also hear their own voice and can hear when a correction is made or needed. This allows the students to become their own best instructor, which is my goal.

All levels of learning are included in my studio from beginner to adult. I also help students prepare for auditions for choirs or shows. We have a recital in the spring to share our music for our families and to see a finished product from other musicians. We often prepare a group number for the final musical selection on the program. I also prepare 2-3 pieces to sing at the recital as an example for my students and families.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, music stand, mirror, pencil & paper for note taking, seating for parent or guest. Additional seating in living room for parents not attending the lesson. Songbooks to use as reference and instruction. I can provide names of providers of songbooks available to purchase.

*** Specialties ***
Broadway, Classical, Folk, Jazz

About Me

Hi! My name is Janet, and I would like to be your new music lessons teacher! As a quick biography, I have 20+ years of experience teaching both piano and voice lessons. I have taught piano students from as young as 5 years old up to a wonderful lady who was a grandmother many times over, and voice students from 10 years old up to adults. I have taught students of all ability levels, from the most basic beginner to very advanced performers. I welcome you to come to my home studio. I have both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree in Music from the University of Indianapolis. I retired in 2009 from teaching in the Indianapolis area public schools after 32 years of teaching elementary vocal/general/choral music.
As a student taking lessons with me, I will always put your desires as a musician first, and consider them to be the most important factor in guiding the progress of your lessons. While I will make basic assignments for you to practice for your next lesson, I am always open to including music that you would like to learn. If there is a particular style of music that you would like to study, or even a particular piece of music that you want to learn, please feel free to mention that to me, and I will do my best to find that music to add to your lessons. If at any time you have questions, requests, or comments, please either mention them to me at the lessons, or contact me by phone, text, or email.
I look forward to meeting you, talking with you about your desires and aspirations as a musician, and to guiding you and helping you to reach your goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I will work with you to find the most convenient time for your lessons. Lessons are given in my home studio. About Me

Music is my life, and is something that I want to share with others! Because of that, I try my best to give positive experiences to all of my students. I have a byline that says "Music is Much More than Just Learning Notes." I believe that! Anyone can learn notes, fingerings, etc. What I try to do is add that "soul" element that each person has and cultivate that into meaningful music!

So, with all that said, here's what I try to instill:

A lesson is a place to share! I listen to students as well as teach. We all have something we can learn from each other!

While I want lessons to be fun and informative, I strive for complete understanding, which means any student will gain the needed mechanics with complete knowledge of why things happen and what they do to and for music. From there, I attempt to teach the "soul" of music and how emotion and spirit play a huge part in memorable music.

I don't believe in brow-beating, but I also don't want to pass over things. I don't believe practice makes perfect, but I do believe practice increases awareness!

I really try hard to help students move beyond the notes on the page. We may listen to music and describe how it makes us feel, or paint pictures both physical and mental of what the music is showing us. That is where I see the soul stepping in.

My Education

As stated before, I started on a little Magnus Organ. My grandmother told me years later that I would listen to television jingles and then try to play them on the organ!

Once we settled in our permanant home, my parents brought home a piano and I began working first with Robert Warnick, a local music teacher in the schools. He taught scales and chords. Then, Midge Bishop took me through John Thompson Grade 3, but then had to move away. Finally, I studied under Victoria Hope, lasting 13 years until I went on to college. She taught me the fine art of piano by continually challenging me to approach each piece as an artwork. She had me use the music to paint the picture. Naturally, the element of the soul came through as I put color to music.

My Experience

Throughout my elementary through high school days, I immersed myself in band, choir and drama. I played piano at church starting very young. I then began trombone in the band during 4th grade. Upon entering high school, I joined choir and participated in marching band, concert band, pep band and jazz band. During those years, I picked up the rest of the brass instruments as needed by my band director. In choir, I excelled both in voice and on piano through accompaniment. Later in high school, I joined up with the drama department where we ultimately had the opportunity to write our own musical. By the time I entered college, I had mastered all the brass instruments, piano and snare drum.

During college, I participated in the marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, pep band, trombone choir, several pit orchestras, and the symphony orchestra. I also participated in the choir.

Since that time, I have mastered the woodwinds, organ, drum set guitar and bass guitar and a little violin. I have over 25 years experience teaching lessons. They occurred off and on throughout my younger days.

I ask lots of questions so I can get to know you better. This is also an opportunity for you ask questions of me. At the beginning, I encourage parents to attend so they can see what these lessons entail. I give you assignments to work with and then you play them for me to receive praise and constructive suggestions. I also try to challenge my students to move beyond the normal curriculum to play other things that interest them.

Depending on the instrument and the experience you have helps me determine what curriculum I want to use. Again, I cater my lessons to the needs you have and by how you like to learn!

After 3 to 6 mos, I hope you have a good working knowledge of how music works and are now moving into intermediate level work. However, each student is different and work a different speeds. My main goal is for you to feel successful whenever you leave my studio!

About Me

Hello! My name is Mariele. I am a professional opera and musical theatre performer and teacher. I have studied singing in universities and conservatories in the United States and Europe. I have also been teaching singing lessons for the past 8 years. I love to help young singers develop their potential in singing, but most importantly encourage them to have fun and love music!!!!!

*** Lesson Details ***
When a student works with me they can expect to have a very patient, kind, and loving teacher. I like to encourage students and help them realize their own unique talent. In the first half of our lesson we will do basic voice technique exercises. The complexity of the exercises vary according to age and experience. The second part of the lesson puts into practice the new voice technique that the student is learning. We do this by singing a variety of songs. Some songs I will bring in and help the student to learn, the other songs will hopefully be songs chosen by the student. I like for the student to be active in their song choices and therefore feel they are not only learning, but expressing their own unique style.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect them to at least have a piano keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in operatic vocal technique but, I also teach various styles of music like pop, jazz and musical theatre.

About Me

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in the arts and natural sciences. I'm a voice instructor, math tutor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance.

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I am currently performing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat at the Booth Tarkington Theatre. I was a finalist in the MasterWorks Festival concerto competition. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz and pop. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be produced in a way that does not damage the vocal folds.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectations that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique form day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I teach an open throat technique called appoggio. It is the technique opera singers use, but can be applied to any music style. This technique allows the singer to sing with their entire voice using a relaxed larynx. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music, subscription to IPA source (foreign language translations and pronunciations), several math and science textbooks

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.
