I was born in New York, then moved back to Istanbul, Turkey where I was raised. I have started to sing in 1983 with various choirs, in Istanbul, Turkey. I have performed with the prestigious TRT (Turkish Radio Television) Istanbul Youth Polyphonic Choir for 4 years. With the choir I had appeared on regular TV concerts, live concerts and radio recordings .I have a B.A. degree in "Advertising & Marketing Research" (emphasis on Creative Writing) from Istanbul University. I also have a teaching certificate from the University of Cambridge, CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults). I have a B.M. I picked up my first guitar about 10 years ago and have been studying and playing ever since. Having a strong interest in composing and writing original music I gigged regularly (3-4 shows a month) performing original material in a rock band in the East Bay until I moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. At Berklee I received rigorous training in traditional and Jazz music theory, Music technology, and guitar performance. Currently residing in the East Bay, I continue to compose, perform, and teach guitar lessons to all ages.

I was originally a classical pianist, but in 1997 I began study of jazz arranging and piano. Following this, I spent 8 years as a touring musician in various bands, traveling mostly around the eastern half of the country. With the dream of writing orchestral music, I then returned to school at Jacobs School of Music (Indiana University) to study classical music composition. I got the opportunity to write for large ensembles there, and then became so interested in experimental music that I decided to come to Mills College, where I am currently teaching as a T.A. and continuing composition study.

I am a classically trained soprano with a special passion for folk songs. I also love to work with my vocal students on musical theater and pop styles.

Having been a performing musician from the age of 10, I have experience in several instruments and almost every genre of music. With a bachelor's degree in flute performance, and most of a master's in the same (to be completed in the next year), my primary focus has been on classical music in flute, with an emphasis in orchestral playing and contemporary music.

I began focusing on singing a few years after flute, to accompany my guitar playing, and began writing songs in the pop/folk genre. I have been singing both solo and with choirs for the last 10 years. The human voice and the flute are remarkably similar in the way the body is used to produce sound, and I use very similar techniques when focusing on breath control and support for both.
