Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!
In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!

We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us feel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!

I am an international recording artist and seasoned performer. I have been playing music since the early age of 8 yrs old. I have always been inspired by music and love to inspire others with music. Some of my accomplishments include putting an album out with Universal Records as a Nashville recording artist, having over 7 albums out internationally, and recording and playing with some of the biggest names in the music industry. I am a classically trained musician as well as an innovative and experienced teacher. I have been teaching for over 15 years and have seen many of my students go on to become top-notch performers themselves while pursuing successful careers in music. In addition to being a private music teacher, I have also taught at many schools in the valley including the Center for Educational Excellence School, Grand Canyon Preparatory private charter school and the Arizona Music Academy. I teach all levels of guitar, bass, and drums and tailor every lesson to the individual student’s needs and personality. My annual recitals are live-performance concerts featuring bands and other performing groups formed from among my students along with solo performances. My students also perform regularly throughout the community and are successful in their musical endeavors at all ages. I teach a wide range of genres and styles from classical music, blues, jazz and rock to heavy metal with an emphasis on becoming A-Level lead guitar soloists and song writers. I teach songwriting skills, music theory, and have even helped many of my guitar students be able to sing better while learning their main instrument.

I make my lessons fun and informative and have had many students stay with me for up to 7 years. I show you everything you will ever need to know about music theory but in a very useful applicable way. I teach popular songs from any artist and classics that have stood the test of time and show you how to become a great song writer of your own giving you an insider’s knowledge about how to perform and have the audience standing asking for more. No matter if you want to become a pro lead guitar player or just play to have fun I can show you how to sing and play the guitar or piano at the same time or singing songs from church as well as your favorite rock or pop songs with confidence.

I have 30 years of teaching experience and have enjoyed a successful singing, teaching and conducting career in the US and Australia. I have excellent piano skills and can sight-read and play most piano accompaniments for my voice students. No two students are alike so I teach everyone according to their needs and their learning style. I have an exceptional understanding of the voice and communicate using tangible imagery to produce excellent results. I work with all levels of singers from beginners to career level in Broadway, Pop and Classical styles. Beyond university training, I have had training from teachers and coaches from the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Arizona Opera and many others.
With piano, again, technique is important but lessons must be FUN! I like using innovative ideas and materials so that learning is exciting.
Practice is important for progress so the more you practice the faster you progress.
Because there is always more to learn, I continue to study and attend master-classes and workshops so I can be the best teacher I can be.
*** Lesson Details ***
I always want my students to leave their lessons knowing that they are better at the end of the lesson than they were at the beginning. Lessons are all about skill-building, so fundamentals of technique, theory and repertoire are included elements. I'm pretty laid back but know that practice is essential to progress. To that end, I always want my students to understand how to practice, not just what to practice. Practice doesn't make perfect, it makes permanent! My goal as a teacher is not just to help you achieve your goals, but to give you the ability to build on your own skills by knowing the how and the why, not just the what.
