Music is my passion! I am currently a free-lance musician in the greater Phoenix area, playing oboe with various ensembles such as the Scottsdale Baroque Orchestra and Tempe Symphony Orchestra, and teaching oboe and piano lessons to students around the valley. I also sell oboe reeds, both to my own students, and to students across the country.
I have taught private music lessons for over eight years. My greatest motivation is sharing my love of music. Lessons with me are never boring. I always strive to show my students how exciting and fun mastering an instrument can be. Not every student desires to be a virtuoso, but every student deserves the opportunity to gain a better understanding and love of music and their chosen instrument.
I offer piano lessons for beginner and intermediate students. I have thirteen years of piano training with three different instructors, including Dr. Donald Speer at Western Kentucky University. I use the Bastien beginner and intermediate piano courses. The Hanon book of exercises is used as well once the student is adequately prepared.
I offer oboe and English horn lessons for beginner through advanced students. I hold a bachelor's degree in music performance from Western Kentucky University, where I studied oboe and English horn with Dr. Michele Fiala, and a master's degree in music performance from Arizona State University, where I studied oboe with Martin Schuring. I have given seven solo recitals and have been a soloist with several groups. I have a wide range of ensemble experience, from orchestras to chamber groups. In lessons I use the Gekeler Oboe Method, the Barret etudes, and the Ferling etudes. Various solo material suited for the student's abilities are also employed. Training in reed making is introduced when the student is both adequately prepared and strongly interested.
*** Lesson Details ***
My goals as a teacher are two-fold: first, to guide students in mastering their chosen instrument as easily as possible; and second, to instill and encourage an enduring love and better understanding of music in each student. Weekly lessons are a combination of warm up routines, technical exercises, and performance pieces, with the student's individual strengths and weaknesses in mind. The tone of lessons is always encouraging and lighthearted in an effort to help students avoid continual frustration. I also train students to listen objectively with a discerning ear to their musical efforts, and teach effective, efficient practice methods for success outside of lessons. Learning a musical instrument should be a fun and rewarding experience!
*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide reed making equipment, and frequently adjust student's reeds during lessons. I bring my oboe, if I feel it is beneficial to the student.
I expect the student to provide a music stand and a fairly quite, uninterrupted location for the lesson. Also, the lessons should take place in a room with good lighting. If the student is a piano student, then they should provide a high quality keyboard or piano.
