About Me

Emil born in Transylvania/Romania, and left the country to tour Italy with the State Philharmonic! Previously, he graduated the Academy of Fine Arts, Romania in Cluj-Napoca/Klausenburg and one year at Santa Cecilia di Roma.
With a Bachelor’s Degree in voice/performance from the University of Arizona, a Master’s Degree from Indiana University and a Doctoral Degree from University of California at Santa Barbara, he most certainly has a more than adequate academic background but also a vast performing background.
He has performed in a wide variety of operatic roles among which two world premiers, “The Leap Over The Shadow”, by Ernst Krenek and “The Devils Of Loudun” by Kristoff Pendereczky. Performed in Oratorios, Requiems, as well as TV and other camera appearances. He also received extremely favorable comments from major opera stars and voice teachers throughout a series of voice recitals between 1993-2003. His facile ability to learn music and memorize text as well as a cognizant grasp of English, Russian, French, German, Italian and his own Romanian language is testimony of a fine academic knowhow and musicianship. His acting technique is sure and he is capable of dramatic interpretations, from broad comedy, where his comic timing is sure and effective, to the heartfelt and honest sympathy required in productions such as “ La Boheme”. He had worked with famous teachers in the filed. Among them are Giorgio Tozzi, Virginia Zeani, Elizabeth Mannion. He performed on stage with the likes of Pablo Elvira, Richard Clark, Eduardo del Campo, Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiu, etc. He performs in Oratorios/Requiems, such as the 2006 Requiem tour in Western Europe with CalPoly University. He is also the winner of numerous competitions, honors and grants, including among them the Igor Gorin Memorial Award, Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, Academy of the West in Montecito -Leni Fe Bland competition, Ellen Faul Gordon, and The Metropolitan Opera Voice Competition.

If they are beginners, being strict makes no sense. Being laid back won't help either. Therefore, I will try to stir their interest through interesting and not quite too challenging vocal scales. The only thing I expect from a student is his/her curiosity -after noticing a change in their voice power and projection-

*** Travel Equipment ***
Music Material. Student will have to pay for copies of my material if the situation arise and of course the student must have a piano or access to one

About Me

Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!

In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!

*** Lesson Details ***
We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us feel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!

Gregory K. Phoenix, AZ

Subjects Taught

Cello, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano, Trumpet

About Me

I have a Doctorate in Music Composition and Piano, and have taught piano for 15 years. My clients have included beginning to advanced students from age 5 to 65. I am passionate about music and look forward to meeting people who share that passion. I believe that making music adds depth and beauty to life, while cultivating creativity, observation, mental acuteness, and perseverance. It is among the most worthy goals in life, whether you aspire to become a professional musician or not. I highly recommend it. That's why I'm a teacher!

*** Lesson Details ***
When I meet with new students, I discuss with them their goals and music interests. The work we do is based on these. I teach music notation, improvisation, and how to play by ear, and help students refine their technique and cultivate greater musical sensitivity. Beginning students will work with recommended method books, and more advanced students will engage classical and contemporary literature. The specific pieces we decide to study depends on the students' likes, preferences, and passions, and to some extent on the teacher's recommendations. I give lots of freedom, and encourage my students to apply themselves diligently to the discipline of studying music. Combining daily practice with consistent lessons, students will develop greater skill, which translates to greater delight in making music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In-home w/ upright piano w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have a keyboard instrument of some kind, preferably an acoustic or digital piano.

*** Specialties ***
As a composer-pianist with a doctorate in music, I primarily teach piano, theory and composition, but I can teach other instruments as well on a beginner level, including guitar, trumpet, cello, and drums. My background is mostly classical, but I also have experience with popular and jazz styles.
