I believe it is very important that students know music theory along with performance knowledge. During lessons, I like to spend time going over music theory with the student, depending on what their instrument and age level is. This includes learning scales (major and minor), chords, reading music and anything the student shows an interest in. It is very important that students learn the basics of music to perform an instrument. I also incorporate learning pieces/songs in the lessons. The songs and pieces that I incorporate in the lessons are songs that are at the student's performance level and is something they are interested in learning. I believe it is important that students learn the fundamentals of music and have fun at the same time.

Vince T. Philadelphia, PA

Subjects Taught

Arrangement and Composition, Bass Guitar, Composition, Ear Training, Guitar, Music Theory, Piano, Pro Tools Software, Trumpet

About Me

Vince is a trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer/arranger in the Philadelphia and New York regions. His primary instrument for the past 16+ years is trumpet; he also performs on assorted brass, electric bass, and vocals. Vince holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and holds a Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Vince first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School; he directed trumpet master classes for high school students. Vince later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, and arrangement & composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams. Also at UArts, Vince was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which he conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations.

Each student approaches music differently, and Vince tailors his teaching to fit that approach. He asks a student what they're aiming to accomplish, then set short and long term goals in order to acheive them. Vince believes a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. His students recieve a wholistic approach to music on whatever instrument of their choice.

He is a member of Soul cover band: The York Street Hustle, with which he plays trumpet and arranges horns. He also regularly performs with Indie Rock bands Heyward Howkins and Roomtone. Vince has appeared on many albums during the past few years including his own debut solo album Syzygy, which is available now. Vince pursues freelance work in the music industry; he continually performs, arranges, composes, and records original music.

Vince is also an Audio Engineer and Producer in the Philadelphia region. He primarily engineers and produces radio & TV commercials, while also engineering and producing original artists' music during the recent two years. Vince has seven years experience operating analog and digital sound boards for live events, radio, and in recording studios. He has also managed multiple semi-professional Jazz ensembles; in charge of scheduling rehearsals, booking performances, negotiating with venues, and marketing via web, print and social media.

Quotes:

"Vince proves himself a very creative composer. I look forward to hearing more from this upcoming composer & instrumentalist." - Fred "Rock Steady Freddie" Reiter

"Vince plays his horn with creative passion and soul , his tone is very open and full these two combined make him one of the leading up and coming young Jazz trumpet players of today." - Rebecca Coupe Franks

"I've had the great pleasure of working with Vince as an arranger and writer. His music explores many styles and directions, and is always well crafted. He has an original and distinctive voice as a player, an arranger, and a writer. Such dedicated talent deserves to be heard, and I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from Vince in the future." - Vinnie Martucci

Subjects Taught

French Horn, Music Performance, Music Theory, Organ, Piano, Trumpet

About Me

I recently received my Master’s in Music Performance from the University of Delaware, where I had a graduate assistantship. While at UD, I volunteered regularly at the El Sistema-inspired after-school music program Play On, Philly. I received my Bachelor’s in Music Performance with a minor in Music Theory from the world-renowned University of North Texas. While at North Texas, I was the horn instructor for Celina I.S.D. where I taught private lessons to the horn students. I was also a Supplemental Instructor for Music Theory II while at UNT. As an SI, I led three weekly sessions that involved group activities for the students in order to enhance their knowledge and understanding of music theory.

I am not sure what first interested me in classical music, but as far back as I can remember, I wanted to learn how to play French horn. I loved the way it looked and sounded and I just had to figure out how to play it myself. I started playing horn when I was 12 and I've been in love ever since. While it can be incredibly frustrating to play sometimes, if you work hard enough and are persistent and dedicated, then you will have a tremendous pay off.

After a few years of just playing horn, I started playing trumpet in jazz band. When I was 16, I began studying piano and continued with my piano studies throughout college, including some studies in organ as well.

I am relaxed while still expecting each of my students to achieve their highest potential. My level of expectation will depend upon each student and the issue involved. After six months with me you can expect to be able to fluently read music, feel a significant sense of improvement on your instrument, and will be able to say you know the joy of music-making first hand!

*** Studio Equipment ***
touch-sensitive keyboard

*** Travel Equipment ***
Stand, tuner, metronome. I have books, but I would also expect my students to buy books and music of their own.

*** Specialties ***
I love teaching horn from beginning to advanced. I have a thorough knowledge of tude books and solos most commonly, and not so commonly, used for all levels of horn instruction. I have studied piano and organ for several years and am very familiar with the varying techniques between the two. I have played recorder (sopranino, alto, tenor) with my collegium while in grad school as the top voice in a Renaissance recorder ensemble and also as a soloist with a Baroque trio sonata group. I have a strong passion for early music and would be delighted to share my love of the music and the instruction of the instruments to any student.
