Hi there! My name is Valerie. I'm a certified music teacher that loves to see a person grow in their love and ability for music. With 17 years of teaching privately, experience teaching publicly in elementary school music classrooms, enjoying several years as a Kindermusik (preschool music) teacher, and a school year teaching with VSA arts of Delaware (teaching music to those with disabilities), I find it thrilling to see a person of any age & background grow and blossom in their passion for music!
Though I enjoy and have experience at teaching all ages from children to adults, I specialize in CHILDREN'S MUSIC EDUCATION (ages 5-12). In addition to being a teacher, I am also a singer/songwriter, and performed for 6 years at local coffee shops and outdoor events within Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. I am also a member of a local professional caroling group called Yuletide Singers which performs seasonally in places like Longwood Gardens and corporate functions. My history for performing stretches back, though, to my years as a puppeteer/children's performer, touring with a team doing school assemblies and evening family performances. Within 3-6 months, we'll begin discovering how to read music and understand the language of it. We'll learn how to play/sing some of your favorite songs and learn some that you might not know. We'll discover what you really want to learn and achieve through taking lessons, and we'll work toward those goals!
For the intermediate piano student, we will begin understanding basic Music Theory and scales and will even take a look at how chord symbols work. Soon, you'll be learning how to accompany yourself and others as you sing! For singers, we'll learn about vocal techniques, breathing, getting your best vocal sound and discovering how to take a song to its potential! We'll also learn performance techniques, how to work with a microphone, have a great stage presence in front of a live audience and begin learning how to read music and even get familiar with the piano keyboard! For all my students, it's a journey that is exciting, unique to each individual, and one we will embark on together!
Because music is a performing art, I coordinate two music recitals each school year for students who are interested. This is an optional event, but is encouraged as part of the learning experience. It is usually held at a local music store recital room and presented in a low-stress and fun way with refreshments that follow!

Elizabeth was most recently seen as Joanie in The Full Monty at Candlelight Theatre in Delaware. Other recent performances include June in Musical of Musicals: The Musical and Peaches/ Baby Jane in Jerry Springer: The Opera with Bootless Stageworks in Wilmington, DE, solo performances with the New Voices Cabaret at the Society Hill Playhouse in Center City, and Woman 2 in My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra with Mainstage Center for the Arts in Blackwood, NJ. She has performed numerous leading roles with Philadelphia area Gilbert and Sullivan companies, most notably appearing as Angelina in Trial by Jury with The Savoy Company, winning Best American Production at the 2011 International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Her G &S performance credits include the roles of Patience (Patience), Yum-Yum (The Mikado), Rose Maybud (Ruddigore), Phyllis (Iolanthe), and Fiammetta (Gondoliers). Additionally, she has pioneered roles in new operas, including Gwendolyn in The Crowded House at the 2010 Philly Fringe Festival and Zelda in Black Horses with OperaDelaware at the 2009 Wilmington Fringe Festival. She "tackled the challenging score with gusto, her beautiful soprano and excellent diction winning in even the highest vocal points" (The Community News of Wilmington, DE).
Elizabeth holds an M.M. in vocal performance from West Virginia University, where she was featured in numerous WVU Opera Theatre productions and was the soprano soloist with WVU Choirs in Faure's Requiem and Handel's Lord Nelson Mass. While at WVU, Elizabeth resumed taking lessons at the piano, which she had previously studied for many years, and exceeded the piano proficiency level required by the university. She also holds a B.A. in music and international studies from Emory University. Elizabeth has studied and performed internationally, both at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where she was the recipient of the Lemmonds Scholarship, and at the Bel Canto program in conjunction with L'Arena di Verona opera company in Verona, Italy.
As a graduate assistant at WVU, Elizabeth taught voice lessons to music education and performance majors as well as a course on vocal pedagogy. After graduating, she served as adjunct faculty, in which capacity she taught vocal repertoire and opera theater. She has maintained a private studio since 2005, in which she instructs students in voice and piano.

I am a fun, enthusiastic teacher who cares deeply about her students and their growth as musicians and people. I believe teaching works best when students are relaxed, having fun, and are actively engaged in the learning process. Musical skills depend upon muscles, so it is important that you practice what we work on during lessons at home if you wish to see real progress. I will work hard along with you and ask for your input during lessons; we are partners in the learning process.
My specialty is the voice. I teach classical vocal technique with an emphasis on the body-mind connection. Through the course of my training, I have studied the Alexander Technique, which is a method that has been used by actors, musicians, and athletes to find optimal body-mind coordination to achieve better results. The voice is the only instrument that is literally your body, so we will be using these tools to improve posture, breathing, and resonance. By learning a healthy vocal technique, you can expect improved tone quality, an expanded vocal and dynamic range, greater resonance, increased agility, improved diction, and more. Healthy vocal technique can be applied to any genre, but I work mostly with classical and musical theater repertoire as this is my area of expertise.
I am also an established piano teacher and have had much success teaching beginning and intermediate students from ages 4 to 91 in various styles of music. I believe it is important for students to learn how to read and interpret written music as well as understand the structure behind it, so in addition to learning musical basics, I incorporate music theory into lessons. I encourage my piano students to learn how to read lead sheets and create chord accompaniments as well, which opens the door for comfortably playing in all sorts of styles sooner than would be possible by classical approaches alone. I also work on improvisation and songwriting with my piano students.
Whichever you choose to study (voice, piano, or both), I tailor lessons to suit each student's needs. I would like to enable you to meet your musical goals, whatever they may be.

Meghan earned her Bachelors of Music in Voice Performance at Penn State University, and is a recent graduate of the University of Delaware where she earned a Master of Music in Voice Performance. At the University of Delaware, Meghan was last seen as Rosalinda in Strauss's Die Fledermaus, and as Susanna in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro with the University of Delaware Opera Theater. She served as the Graduate Teachers Assistant for both the Voice and Opera Departments from 2009-2011. In addition, Meghan performed as Juliette in Scenes from Romeo et Juliette with the University of Delaware Opera Workshop, as well as directed scenes from Carmen, Hamlet and Die Fledermaus during her time at UD.
Most recently, Meghan was accepted as a Fellow at the CoOPERAtive Opera Training Program at Westminster Choir College. She has performed as a Young Artist at the Bay View Music Festival, where she sang the role of Nella in both Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and the Michigan premier of Michael Ching's Buoso's Ghost. She attended Songfest Music Festival in Malibu California as a Young Artist and was a featured performer in concert and Master Class for renowned musicians including Margot Garrett and Lisa Saffer. She has also attended the Florence Voice Seminar through Westminster Choir College, where she studied with a fantastic faculty of vocal coaches and voice teachers in Florence, Italy. She has performed as a soloist with the Oberlin College Singers, the Penn State Concert Choir, and the Penn State Baroque Ensemble and has toured with the University of Delaware Chorale throughout Spain. She has been featured as a soloist with the Oberlin College Singers, the Penn State Concert Choir, and the Penn State Baroque Ensemble and has toured with the University of Delaware Chorale throughout Spain.
Meghan currently lives in Philadelphia PA, and is an Adjunct Voice Instructor at the University of Delaware. She maintains a private voice studio in the Philadelphia area, and is an active performer throughout the region.
My passion for classical music is mainly rooted in opera and classical voice, which is my area of expertise. I aim to help students to explore classical techniques of breathing, phonation and exploration of repertoire that is fulfilling, challenging and fun to sing! Although opera is certainly my specialty, I also have taught many students interested in exploring the musical theater genre, and who are active singers and performers in musical theater productions and operetta as well. I am extremely comfortable teaching both genres, as I feel that good singing is good singing, no matter what type of music we work on together.
After spending some to get to know you in your first lesson with me and discussing, goals, genres that you love, we will begin your lesson with vocal warm ups that include exercises that focus on posture, breathing, natural and flowing sound production and releasing tension that might be getting in the way of a free ringing sound. After warming up, we will then move on to work on specific repertoire that is appropriate for the student, and which we have chosen together, and work to implement those same ideas of beautiful, tension-free sound production, and good breathing. Through spending time on repertoire, we will also discuss historical backgrounds of the music which you will sing, performance practice and technique and expression, which will help the student to prepare for auditions, performances, recitals or productions! I have aided students to prepare for auditions for GLEE, entrance auditions to become voice majors in college, and to prepare opera and musical theater roles for the stage!

Having graduated from Westminster Choir College, I have learned many techniques for helping students to understand their voices better. I have taken voice lessons myself since 2002, and still do take them. This gives me the opportunity to learn new and different techniques. As every student is different, there are many different techniques that can help the student to find their voice.
One style of teaching that I really feel is important when discussing the voice is the idea of just singing. Often times, as was my experience, when people hear voices they like they will mimic that sound. The problem with that is that the person will start singing with a voice that does not work with their body. That is usually my first goal if they have this particular issue. Many times breath and support need to be addressed right away.
After that it is teaching the student technique and helping them through the growing process of their voice. This technique is for the healthiest kind of singing and will preserve the voice for a much longer time then would other styles of singing. That being said, a person can still sing other styles with a slight variation to the technique, but still keeping things healthy and feeling good.
I have added that I am willing to teach individuals who have special needs. I will say that where I teach does have stairs and is not wheelchair accessable. I am sorry about that. I do work at a school for children with developmental disabilities during the day and have been there for almost 4 years now. I have worked with adults as well as children. This has not been in a music setting, but I do have some ideas as to how to make it fulfilling for them as possible. That being said I will be honest with these individuals as well as patient. I believe that they should be treated equally and therefore will get the same level of attention as any of my other students.

I am a fairly laid back teacher, with the philosophy that the student must find their own reason for practicing and work hard. If the student is a young child, I believe that they sing because they love to do it and that love should not be killed by becoming a chore. I would encourage them to practice more in the form of play. This is the work of children after all.
If the student is older, and at an age where they are more serious about the work that comes from learning how to sing properly. Then they should be able to find their inspiration for practicing. I am a firm believer that no one can change someone except for them-self.
The idea of a curriculum would of course differ from student to student, but it also differs with age. With young children, the first goal would be to see how well they match pitch, because it will be difficult to get the student to work on technique if they have trouble matching pitch. Therefore that would be my first goal. After that, I would test the students range and work on teaching them technique.
If the student is in the process of changing their voice, I will work on helping them through this change and help them to find their new voice. This is where the biggest chance of students loosing their real voice and starting to mimic other older singers. The fact is that, they will have a more mature voice in time, but they need to sing in their voice and the more mature sound will come. The main thing will be working on stretching there range little by little. This is because after the male voice changes, they tend to have a very small range. This would be the large overall goal to teach them to use their own voice, stretch their range, and learn technique.
If the student is in their upper teens, then they should have a larger range, but they may still need to find their own voice. The next part will be just teaching the student technique and stretching their range.

Sandra began her training at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She is a two time recipient of the Mario Lanza Award, and holds a B.M. degree in opera from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. She studied acting at both the Wilma and Walnut Theaters in Philadelphia. In New York, she studied Shakespeare at the HB Studios, and received on-camera training at the Weisst- Barron Commercial School. Sandra is a member of Actor's Equity.
Sandra was engaged for seven years at Theater des Westens in Berlin, Germany, where she performed extensively in Musicals and Operetta. She also toured throughout Germany with the ensemble "Operetten Express". In the U.S., Sandra has toured nationally with "Man of La Mancha" and "Carousel", and has performed leading roles in many regional theaters. She also performed in the Off-Broadway Musical "Mamaleh". Sandra has performed in over fifty productions of Musicals, Operetta, and Opera. Some of her favorite roles include: Aldonza (Man of La Mancha), Desiree (A Little Night Music), Marguerite (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann), and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi).
As a director, Sandra has staged operas for Center City Opera Theater, the Delaware Valley Opera Company, Boheme Opera New Jersey, and the New York Metro Vocal Arts Ensemble. She is currently singing concerts with the vocal group "Touch of Classics", and can be seen in commercials for Time Warner, Cuisinart, The Skooter Store, and Aspercreme.

Hi, my name is Rosalind H. and I began my musical education at the age of ten, when I first started taking lessons. Since that time I have performed professionally as a singer in churches, cafes and at weddings and in venues including the Kimmel Center and Carnegie Hall during my college years with the renowned Westminster Symphonic Choir. After spending a year teaching children and adolescents aged 6-17 voice and piano while completing my MasterÂ™s of Arts in Music Therapy at Drexel University, I am now looking to take on private students in Chester County and surrounding areas.
I am a Westminster Choir College '11 Alum who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a Board Certified Music Therapist.

Piano students can expect to learn the basic music theory knowledge, including reading staff notation and lead sheets. I will also focus on fingering techniques and coordination.Students will be expected to practice theory knowledge and songs outside of lessons to help improve finger coordination and music-reading speed and accuracy.
I offer beginning to advanced singing lessons for students interested in classical, operatic, Broadway and popular music and beginning piano lessons.I try to provide my students the opportunity to practice a wide range of skills when learning music.
Voice students will learn exercises to practice good breath control, posture and diction, all of which form the foundations of good singing. Students will be expected to practice these exercises outside of lessons, prior to practicing vocal literature, so as to develop good singing habits. About fifty percent of lesson time will be dedicated to technique, and the other fifty percent will be dedicated to learning vocal pieces. Dependent upon their level of knowledge, students may also be asked to watch videos of professional singers outside of lessons, so as to expand their musical understandings and aural sensitivity. These practices will enhance muscle coordination and breath control when singing, helping to enhance and improve pitch, timbre, expression and vocal range.
As a board certified music therapist, I often draw upon those skills I learned during my master's degree in music therapy, which taught me that music can have a profound effect on the human brain and upon cognitive development. My skills as a music therapist allow me to better understand a student's cognitive strengths and areas for improvement, and to develop individualized teaching strategies which utilize student strengths.
