About Me

Matthew N. has been an educator and performer in the Chicago area and suburbs for over 10 years. Currently holding a studio of nearly 40 students he has become one of the area's many successful private instructors. Teaching piano, drums, and guitar Matthew can accommodate any student's needs and musical ambitions in those areas.

Matthew has studied at the collegiate level at the University of Iowa and holds a Bachelors in Percussion Performance. He has also been performing professionally at many of Chicago's finest venues for many years. Matthew is an audio engineer certified in Pro Tools and Logic Pro, which are industry standard programs. Students are able to record and learn the art of production as they learn their instrument if they so choose. This allows students to hear themselves and learn from their performance as well as share their passion with family and friends as they create music.

Students are encouraged to pursue whatever moves them and are never restricted to any one type of practicing or playing. The main goal is to allow the student to find his or her own path in music and develop their own abilities in whatever way they see fit.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students will have full access during lesson time to recording equipment. The best way to learn how to improve is to listen to yourself play. The student will be able to take home recordings of themselves and study what they can work on, allowing them to make the decision on what they would like to improve on.

Students are encouraged to use Alfreds Method Books for Snare and Drum Set, Riley Books, and the Chester book for independence. Also, I teach the Faber Piano Adventures Series. Alfred's and Hal Leonard for guitar.

A cancellation 24hrs in advance is always appreciated.

About Me

Growing up, I participated in every musical activity I could find: from choir to handbells, concert bands to jazz bands, and marching bands to rock bands. I love performing different types of music, but I decided to focus on classical clarinet performance in college. I graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2007 with a B.M. in Clarinet Performance. I also continued studying piano as a minor instrument at UIUC. Since then, I have revisited some of my former favorite pastimes: I teach handchime classes in schools, play in a rock band, and work for a jazz-oriented music/tutoring program.

Since graduating, I have performed several memorable concerts with highly skilled ensembles such as the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and Wheaton Municipal Band. CJP is a one of a kind jazz orchestra, and with them I have performed two very well-received concerts at the Auditorium Theatre and one outstanding performance at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in 2008, honoring Nelson Mandela. The orchestra blends two of my favorite styles of music: classical and jazz. The Wheaton Municipal Band is a more traditional band in the Chicago suburbs: playing marches, classical favorites, and pop medleys. Throughout the summer, the band gives free top-notch performances in Wheaton's Memorial Park. I have used my keyboard skills to perform at venues around Chicago (including Metro, Schuba's and Lincoln Hall) with Nick Miller and the Neighbors.

My diverse musical interests motivate me to teach. I enjoy sharing my love for music and artistic expression with students of all ages. I began teaching young clarinet students privately in 2000, while still in high school. After I began teaching group piano lessons in Chicago public schools in 2007, I decided to start teaching private piano lessons. Piano was the first instrument I took lessons on, and it has turned out to be my favorite instrument to teach beginners. I appreciate the freedom private lessons offer me as a teacher to tailor the lesson to the individual student. I understand there are many ways of learning and believe there are at least as many ways of teaching. My goal as a teacher is to pass on lessons of patience, creativity, appreciation, confidence and dedication to my students. I hope my students will apply these lessons to their musical studies and throughout all areas of their lives.

Music has been an incredibly powerful force in my life, and I love to bring it to others through instruction and performance. The best thing about music is it can touch anyone, even someone who has not studied it. However, I believe learning to playing an instrument will always deepen one's musical appreciation, while being a fun and rewarding experience.

I want my students to leave their lessons with skills and confidence that will help them in all areas of life. It is important to me that I give my students the ability to keep learning outside of our lessons. I believe that music is an art form that should be explored and can be enjoyed by all!

Working with beginners is my specialty. I understand that each student learns differently, and finding the right method for my students is very important to me.

Piano and clarinet lessons begin with an assessment of ability and setting of goals. I like to use the Faber and Faber piano series with my piano students. Clarinet method books depend on the experience level of the student. All lessons are a combination of theory, instrumental/performance technique, and ear training.

I expect piano students to have a keyboard or piano for practice at home. Clarinet students should have their own clarinet and reeds. All students should bring all lesson books, worksheets, and notes to each lesson.

I have lesson books/resources that I can provide for the first lesson, and then I will work with my student to find the right materials for their level.

I play, write, record and perform a variety of American popular music forms
including rock, folk, blues, funk, bluegrass, country, fingerstyle
guitar, and jazz.

I began my musical training learning drums as a 12 year old and a year later began private lessons on guitar as well. In the following years, while playing in rock bands and focusing primarily on guitar and continuing practice on drums, I became interested in learning other instruments: I took harmonica lessons and taught myself how to play bass guitar and keyboards. As a teenager I also began writing my own songs and teaching myself how to record music. I also play Spanish flamenco guitar and studied with master flamenco players while living in Madrid, Spain.

Today, I play guitar, harmonica, sing and write songs for my own group, while also working on a variety of other recording projects that reflect my various musical personalities. I love everything about music, and there's nothing I enjoy more than sharing music with others, whether that be playing in a group, going to a concert with a friend, or talking about music with one of my students. One of my greatest joys is seeing others get involved in the world of music by learning to play an instrument, so I take great pride and responsibility in teaching my students and I hope to make that experience as positive and rewarding as it can be for everyone I work with.

I am happy to work with students of any age regardless of prior experience or ability. Music is the universal language. Everyone is welcome.

My approach:
I take a multi-disciplinary, multi-instrumental approach to teaching music. I feel that today's students are very interested in learning more than just one instrument, style or discipline. One of my greatest assets as a teacher is that I can play and teach guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, keyboards, songwriting, and audio production/engineering, or any combination thereof, to a student that is interested in becoming more than just a guitar player.

That being said, my musical experience centers primarily on the guitar, and that's where I prefer to start teaching my students. And if you only want to learn guitar, we'll just stick with guitar. However, if you want to learn other instruments too (guitar and drums; guitar, bass, and harmonica; guitar, keys and drums; etc.) we will work together to create a program that allows you to achieve all of your musical goals in time.

No matter what, the bottom line is this: you determine the direction of your musical education. The first time we meet, we will talk about your musical interests and goals, and from that conversation I will design a curriculum that fits your personality, needs and desires. I work with each of my students to determine and constantly refine his or her path, and as we follow your path I will work to give you all the tools needed to pursue your goals...and if I can't give them to you I'll help you find someone who can. I know my limits as a musician and teacher and I will always be honest with you about those things. For example, if you decide you want to be a jazz guitarist, I can get you started on that path, but once you advance beyond my limits (I love jazz, but it's not my forte), I will help you find a teacher who better fits your needs and goals.

Finally, I have always felt that music should be fun and there's no reason that learning to play an instrument can't be fun too. That doesn't mean it won't be hard work, because, like anything else in life, as you get deeper into music it will not only become more rewarding, but more challenging too. Still, it should always be fun. I understand that each student is unique and what "fun" means for one student may be different for another, and so we will work at your pace and according to your goals and desires to create a program that is ideal for you.

My Method:

I use a variety of teaching techniques and tools in my lessons and will cater those tools toward the needs of each student. You don't need to read music to learn how to play an instrument, but I do use a number of simple, easy-to-learn written methods in my teaching. More importantly, I encourage my students to learn how to "hear" music so that as they advance they can begin to teach themselves how to play the things that they hear. Therefore, much of my teaching method focuses on seeing, hearing and feeling the music...this is the way almost all popular music has been taught and learned since the beginning of time, and with the right supplement of written methods I think it still comprises the most effective way to become a complete musician.

I can also record every lesson for my students and make the recording available as a CD or mp3 via email so that you can listen to the lesson as you practice on your own at home.

Additionally, if you are interested in songwriting or audio recording, we can incorporate lessons on those subjects into your curriculum as well. Understanding both is an essential part of being a well-rounded musician in any genre these days and both fields can open up wide worlds of expression and artistry to those willing to delve into them. I am passionate and knowledgeable about both songwriting and recording.

Biography

Josh W. currently lives in Wood Dale, IL, where he plays with the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra (formerly the North Suburban Symphony) in Lake Forest, as well as the FullScore Chamber Orchestra. Josh teaches all areas of percussion out of his home studio and at Quinlan and Fabish in Mount Prospect. He received his MM in Percussion Performance from Butler University under Jon Crabiel, Craig Hetrick, and Jeff Queen, and was the Graduate Assistant in Percussion. He received his BM in Percussion Performance/Music Composition from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where he studied with Jerry Bolen and Craig Williams for percussion, and Kimberly Archer for composition, graduating magna cum laude.

While at Butler, Josh was principal percussionist in the Butler Ballet Orchestra, and a section percussionist with the Butler Symphony. He also helped lead and rehearse the BU Percussion Ensemble, along with guest teaching the World Percussion class. He was extremely active in the Butler Community Arts School: teaching private and group lessons both on Butler's campus and in local schools in Indianapolis. Josh was also a member of the percussion staff at Granite City High School in Granite City, IL and taught private lessons at Halpin Music in Alton, IL. At Halpin, Josh served on staff for the Rock 101 program, as well as teaching, giving clinics, and leading drum circles. He was a substitute for the Alton Symphony Orchestra, served as percussion coach for the Alton Youth Symphony, and has played with the St. Louis Brass Band, and the Alton Municipal Band. During his time at SIU-E, he was the principle percussionist for the Wind Symphony and the Symphonic Orchestra. Josh also performed with the SIU-E Percussion Ensemble and was a charter member, and first president of the SIU-E Chapter of SCI (Society of Composers, Inc.)

He can be heard in the percussion section on recordings from the SIU-E Wind Symphony: "Wind Adventures" 2010-Mark Masters (Label), "On Fire" 2009-Mark Masters (Label), and "Geometric Dances" 2006-Mark Custom Recording Service, Inc. (Label).

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed to better the performances and techniques of a singer, dancer, or actor.
Techniques such as breathing, diction, pitch, tone, posture, rhythm, smoothness, and stage presence will be practiced. I do my best to develop lessons that are tailored to each student based on their individual needs. Lessons start simply with gentle vocal exercises based on humming and open vowel sounds. Each student can expect to be challenged through exciting a stimulating exercises. I also teach techniques to improve posture, poise and vocal performance. I enjoy using simple scales to improve pitch and volume while also working on clarifying the students voice. A students performance, whether they aspire to be a performer, teacher, or just enjoy performing should have a positive self portrait of themselves. We will work on building confidence so we as performers can take pride in ourselves and what we represent. My students are expected to practice outside of the lesson. I also encourage them to keep a practice journal of when and how long they have practiced. It helps the students to trouble shoot areas of their performance and take the opportunity to ask questions during the next lesson.

I work from a loft apartment, consisting of an area next to computer with a home recording studio area for music and keyboard. There is also seating for parents if they desire to attend lessons.

I highly suggest the student have their own keyboard/piano. I do have a keyboard and music along with theory books and lesson plans, but would expect a quiet work environment for the student to pay attention.
