About Me

Always wanted to learn to play piano? Now is the time! My name is Jerry and I am an experienced, patient, gentle teacher, with over 20 years teaching and performing experience. I teach all ages, from beginners to advanced students. Learn to read or play by ear. Just want to learn a few of your favorite songs...we can do that too.

I have a B.A. in Music Education and plenty of real world experience:

Private teaching: Scores of students over the last twenty years.
Performing: Decades as band member, leader and solo performances. I have worked with Herbie Hancock, Mary Wells, Greg Kihn and Jessie Colin Young, to name a few.
Public school system: Over five years teaching music in Cook County (Chicago area), IL.

You may also hear me play every Monday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m. at Woody's Steakhouse in Madison. Come enjoy some great food and music!

Make 2014 the year you finally learn to play, it can be fun and rewarding.

*** Lesson Details ***
Self motivation is your greatest ally; I want to help you become motivated and fall in love with the piano.

Beginners can expect to work from method books. The basics are very important and do not need to be tedious…and every piano player/musician goes through this process. Once the basics are learned, we can explore any music you like.

We will begin to explore harmony and music theory; build a chord vocabulary; learn to read a "lead sheet" and even learn to play by ear, using theory to anticipate certain patterns in the music…there are always patterns! If you are a songwriter, I can help you with that as well.

Music is a mystery waiting to be unraveled. Let's get started!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room with Yamaha moX8 digital piano, recording equipment, and seating for parents.

*** Specialties ***
For young beginners I like to use a method book such as Bastien or Alfred. For students with a certain reading proficiency, I generally choose material from my personal library. If a student has a specific request, whether written material or something to learn by ear, I encourage it. I teach any style. I especially like jazz, but never force it on anyone.
I'm always trying to find what my student is interested in. Often they don't know, but when they do...I like to go with that.

About Me

I am a music lover, educator, and songwriter. I have been playing music since I was very young and it has consistently brought joy into my life. I have been teaching since 2007, specifically to share the joy i find in music. I teach because I think everyone is capable of making great music, and I want to help you figure out how.
I grew up in California and have toured extensively throughout the western US. I graduated from Berklee College of Music where I earned my degree in Guitar Performance in 3 years. Since then I've been teaching, writing, and playing non stop.

*** Lesson Details ***
My Students get a very individualized experience. I want to help you play the music you love or want to create. We start playing songs as soon as possible, because it provides a context for instrument fundamentals and music theory. I'm not particularly strict, but in order to be successful a student must put forth an earnest effort.
Within a few weeks of starting lessons, my students will be able to play some of their favorite songs, as well as understand the musical concepts the song was written with. Further down the road, my students will have a firm grasp on music theory and will have all the necessary skills to write their own music, be in a band, or simply play music with a deep love and understanding for it.

*** Studio Equipment ***
All Necessary 2 Guitar Amplifiers, Bass Amplifier. Students only need to bring their instrument, materials, and something to write with. Newly added 88 key weighted keyboard for piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Piano Students must have a piano in house. I can and will provide all other equipment. I prefer for guitar and bass students to have their own amplifiers.
Students are responsible for their own instructional materials.

*** Specialties ***

About Me

I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (4 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student asked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a Music Education degree from the University of Florida; my major instrument was Voice, my minor was Piano. I taught as a public school music educator in Florida, California, and Tennessee between the years of 1983 to 1997. I taught private students after school in my classroom while I was a public school teacher, and from my home since 1997. My post-graduate continuing professional education includes Tennessee Arts Academy at Belmont University, Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1 (vocal teaching techniques, do-re-mi, ear training), Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification, Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: piano near front entryway, couch, loveseat, over-sized chair, dining room table, open space, end table with chair, parents can sit in on lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***

About Me

I am a classically trained vocalist who started singing and playing piano at the age of 7. I have a background in music theater, opera and commercial voice. I studied piano through college and started teaching beginning piano and voice during my summer breaks. I attended Belmont University where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance and minor in music business. I absolutely love teaching beginning voice and piano. This one of the most influential times during a student's study. I think we've all had a teacher at some time or another that made learning a negative experience. It's my job and goal to make your experience the complete opposite. I want you to have fun and be relaxed. Most of all, I want you to learn to love music and the possibilities it can bring you.

*** Lesson Details ***
When it comes to teaching, I work with beginner students in piano and voice, typically ages 6 to 18. I want to make students feel comfortable and excited for their lesson. Music should always be about having fun.For piano, I use the Bastien Piano Basics Series along with supplemental material. My students learn basic technique, theory, music history and ear training. During music history and theory lessons, I like to use the computer and iPad as another resource to teach. Kids today are surrounded by technology so why not let technology also help them to fall in love with music?During voice lessons, each student will learn the basics of singing. I use a book I have used myself during my vocal studies, Releasing the Inner Voice: A Guide for Singers by Marjorie Halbert, to help through the beginning stages. My main goal as a teacher is to show you how to sing properly and safely first, then, we can use that foundation as a sounding board to experiment in the different styles you want to sing.

*** Specialties ***
Beginning piano - basic technique and music theory. Beginning classical/opera, gospel, musical theater and pop voice.
