I have been extremely fortunate to work with Joe over the past few years. On top of being one of the best people I have ever met in my life, he is also one of the best musicians I have ever met. Although his musical forte is drums, his knowledge of other instruments contributes to provide an extremely well-rounded instructional approach.

Patient, versatile, and encouraging!

Go with Joe!!!

Joe is awesome - I brought in some songs I wanted to learn and he made me sound like a rockstar! He really makes learning fun. ...and all this coming from a guy with no rhythm - seriously, he's a miracle-worker.

The studio is clean... he's always there on time...very professional... no complaints.

My new musical motto: IN JOE I TRUST!!!

Joe is a delight. I've always been interested in Conga Drums.
But with zero experience I didn't really know how to get started lol...

Joe was patient, kind, and constructive. AND WHAT A CONGA PLAYER!
I look forward to future lessons and continuing to improve.

Thanks, Joe!

I teach how to read rhythms and how to groove!

About Mike

I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompany students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.

I've been taking lessons from Mike for about 6 months now and his enthusiasm and supportive approach are invaluable. This is my 3rd time trying lessons and the first time I've continued past the first couple sessions. And the reason is Mike. He's extremely talented, but more importantly, he's a phenomenal teacher. He explains things simply, concisely, and effectively. I leave every lesson enthused and excited to go home and practice. I can't recommend him highly enough. Mike's the man!

Mike S will teach you how to allow yourself to learn a new instrument!

Mike really is incredible. The guitar looked so complicated and confusing before I met Mike. He really teaches you how to allow yourself to learn a new instrument. Within a month I was improvising over simple changes with my own ideas! And within 2 or 3 months, the amount of chord structures I had at my disposal was mind blowing. The speed at which I became comfortable with the instrument was amazing. I really believe that Mike's simple teaching style really was a key part in my ability to play and grow on a new instrument. Other than that, he is one of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet and play with. He gives so much of his time to his community by teaching anyone from child to infinity and even bringing them together to create bands to showcase every persons different talents. He is a beautiful human being and I do actively suggest him to anyone that tells me they want to learn either piano, guitar, or bass.

AMAZING music teacher!

I have been taking lessons with Mike since I was age 5, and am now age 25. Mike was the first person to make me feel passion and love for music. He helped me discover my talent by allowing and encouraging me to play by ear and was always incredibly supportive, patient, and kind. Lessons with Mike make me eager to practice the piano daily and I have ALWAYS looked forward to our next lesson together because of the fun and easy-going environment he creates. If it weren't for Mike, I would not continue to play the piano as often as I do as an adult. He goes above and beyond for his students and I would HIGHLY recommend him as a teacher. I know I will take lessons from him for as long as he's still teaching!
Joan Q. Santa Monica, CA

My lessons focus on technique, reading, and application. I will provide the student with exercises to practice between lessons. My teaching will adjust according to the student's level, pace, and goals.

My goal for my students is to have an understanding on how to use their instrument, develop versatility, discover who they are as a musician, and have fun along the way!

Joan is very patient as an instructor. I appreciate the feedback she has given me on nuances in my body posture, my grip on the sticks, and seating position to help me be comfortable during the lessons. I began drum lessons with her early in my pregnancy and she has been very accommodating to my busy and hectic schedule.

Joan is GREAT!

Joan has been a fantastic teacher to our 5 year old son. She is very patient and takes the time to ensure that he is following directions and understanding drumming concepts. She also is flexible with scheduling and kept in constant touch with us if any changes were made to the scheduled practice lessons. We highly recommend Joan to anyone who is looking to take drum lessons from TakeLessons. Thanks Joan!!!

My sons experience with Joan as his drum teacher has been great! She is very knowledgeable in both her musicl skills and working well with young people. She took time to observe my son to fine which way he learns best. He is now getting the most out of each lesson. Most importantly he is happy with his progress and looks foward to his lesson each week.

I want to make sure my students have a good time learning percussion but I also want to make sure they learn a lot..! I always make sure to ask my students what they want to learn and what their favorite music is... after that, I figure out what type of lessons to plan out.

Ryan K. Woodland Hills, CA

Ryan is knowledgable along a wide spectrum of hand percussion, including more traditional forces, such as Latin percussion technique (conga/bongos/shakers/accessory percussion), as well as the middle eastern tabla (doumbek/derbekke), indian tabla, and mallet percussion, such as timpani instruction. Ryan teaches on a MalletKat which can be used for all keyboard percussion needs including marimba, xylo, and vibes. Ryan also has experience adapting all of these to the drum set or in being played in conjunction with a kit set up.

About Ryan

Ryan started his music with piano lessons at age four while lending his vocal talents in the recording booth for his musician/writer/ arranger father, Rick. Ryan was playing in piano recitals by age six, segued from keyboards to drums at age 14, and was subsequently accepted into the University of California, Santa Barbara percussion program after high school.

While an undergraduate at UCSB, Ryan spent three years as the principal timpanist for the UCSB Symphony and five years as timpanist with the UCSB Wind Ensemble. Concurrently over the same five year period, he performed with a diversity of UCSB ensembles, Orchestra and Jazz combos, work with the College of Creative Studies department (CCS), and a variety of recording and recital work in and outside the university. excellent instructor for drums and piano!

Ryan is an exceptional music instructor. He has been giving guidance to my 13 year old son on drums and piano for 3-4 months and my son's abilities have dramatically soared. Ryan is equally talented on both instruments and offers top notch dual instruction. Ryan is a true musician and knows how to communicate the language of music on various levels to my son. He observes and instructs accordingly.
My son is so excited after each lesson that he comes home and practices both instruments on his own, without having to be prompted. My son plays both instruments now with so much more style and exuberance. Ryan is extremely professional, soft spoken and gifted on his own. I would highly recommend Ryan as a music instructor for kids and adults.

Ryan is an excellent teacher. Thanks to his amazing knowledge of the subject matter, impressive creativity, support and patience, my son always looks forward to Ryan's lessons. Ryan always supports my son's passion to learn to play the piano and drums, and he successfully manages to direct my son's energy into something productive, which motivates my son to learn even more. So, thank you, Ryan, for everything!

Brian's experience and passion for drumming become apparent during the first lesson. He is a talented musician and a wonderful teacher, adjusting the pace of each lesson to match your needs and your level of skill. His ability to play numerous styles makes him an ideal teacher for those up and coming drummers who don't want to get locked into playing one particular type of music. I've been playing drums for as long as Brian has, but even with all of my experience he has still helped me branch out and incorporate new techniques into my repertoire. Whether you are a beginner, looking to learn the basics, or an experienced drummer, looking to hone your skills in a particular area, Brian is a great teacher to turn to!

Brian is one of the most gifted drummers I've ever met. His teaching style is extremely relaxed. Every time I meet with him, he puts me at ease. Brian makes learning an instrument fun. His approach is direct and straight to the point. He's also very perceptive and focuses specifically on what he feels I am having trouble with the most. I have been taking lessons from Brian for over a year now, and I cannot believe how much I have grown as a musician. I am even playing in front of my friends now. My confidence is high and owe it all to Brian!
