About Me

Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***

Liesl M. Pottstown, PA

Subjects Taught

Choir, Classical Voice, Ear Training, Musical Theater, Music Performance, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Vocal Training

About Me

A well-rounded and healthy individual will make the healthiest singer, with creative ideas for interpretation. The teaching of voice to integrate historical vocal pedagogy and newer, scientific methods of voice instruction is my preferred way to approach singing in the voice student. This next generation of singers in today‚¬Ä¬ôs conservatories are trained with the beauty of the Bel Canto technique and the knowledge of voice specialists, which is something truly remarkable. The tried and true methods of the Manuel Garcias and Mathilde Marchesi should be preserved for singers in a way that also acknowledges the growing field of laryngeal and voice science and pathology. Incorporating techniques of Yoga and Holistic Health practice into the voice studio can only help us to eliminate the bodily harm of regularly performing and the stressful lives that go into being a singer.

Holistic Health and Yoga studies were both integrated into my undergraduate curriculum at San Francisco State University, giving me a mere glimpse into the wealth of knowledge of these fields. Even a brief understanding of the improvements in posture you can gain from a regular yoga practice or integrating Alexander Techniques into the studio can not only extricate pain in the body, but allow for improvement of breath and vocal tone as a result.

My official bio:

Liesl is a coloratura soprano originally from Yuba City, California. She recently completed her Master of Music from Westminster Choir College in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. She completed her undergraduate studies in 2011 at San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance.

In February, 2014 Liesl performed as a guest artist for the 50th Anniversary of the Frank V. de Bellis Collection at the J Paul Leonard Library at her Alma Mater, San Francisco State University, in San Francisco, CA. She sang the role of Abelle in a special presentation the Scarlatti Oratorio Il Primo Omicidio with other selected SF State alumni.

During her graduate studies, Liesl sang the roles of Madame Herz in Der Schauspieldirektor, Antonia in Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, and Tytania in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream with Westminster Opera Theater. Liesl was also an active participant in the opera workshop class taught by Nova Thomas, singing the roles of Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, and Konstanze in Die Entf√ľhrung aus dem Serail. Liesl also enjoys work behind the curtain, and directed scenes from The Marriage of Figaro and The Merry Widow. In November, 2013, Liesl participated in a masterclass with soprano Dawn Upshaw. In Summer, 2013, Liesl was an Opera Fellow at Rider University's CoOPERAtive Program. There, she sang in masterclasses with Kathleen Kelly (University of Texas) and Pierre Vallet (Tokyo Opera, Metropolitan Opera). This program also offered the fantastic chance to receive private dramatic coaching with director Amy Hutchison (Chicago Lyric Opera).

In the first year at Westminster, graduate students participate in the Westminster Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Joe Miller. Here, Liesl was able to sing with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Yannick Nezet-Seguin, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, and the Simon Bolivar orchestra under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. This experience provided the chance to perform in such locations as the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Before beginning graduate studies, Liesl taught Vocal Techniques at Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts. There, she also served as the vocal coach & accompanist for the lead roles and chorus in the school's musical, She Loves Me. In Marysville and Yuba City she sang with Borgamaria Lyric Opera, Sutter Performing Arts Association, and was a soloist in Handel's Messiah with the Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society.

In undergraduate studies at San Francisco State, she appeared as Esmeralda in The Bartered Bride, Flipote in Tartuffe, and in numerous scenes productions with the opera workshop. As a soloist, she sang excerpts from the role of Maria in a West Side Story vignette under the direction of Vance George, as well as singing as a soloist in Mendelssohn's Ave Maria. In April, 2011, she placed first in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Bay Area Chapter festival for Art Songs. Among her experiences, Liesl was a member of the San Francisco State Chamber Singers, University Chorus, Women's Chorus and Afro-Cuban Ensemble. Outside of school, she stayed active in the Bay Area performing arts community, singing chorus with the San Francisco Lyric Opera, Urban Opera, and Golden Gate Opera.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should have a piano or keyboard if they are doing in-home lessons. It's not required, but extremely helpful. If not, please have some sort of iPod speakers.

*** Specialties ***
I was trained in the classical Bel Canto style, but I am comfortable with many different genres, including jazz and musical theater.

I've performed in choirs from around the San Francisco, New York, and Philadelphia metro regions, in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kimmel Center, and Davies Symphony Hall. I have also been part of numerous opera productions and I encourage my students to participate in community music groups. Gfire Austin, TX

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, SAT, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice

About Me

gfire has been teaching music full-time for over 16 years. Based in Austin, Texas, the "Live Music Capital of the World," she offers voice, piano, songwriting and DJ'ing lessons to students from 5-105 and she specializes in sculpting her lessons to the strengths and desires of each individual student. Her students range from beginning to advanced levels, and they sing and play a multitude of musical styles, including classical, pop, rock, r 'n' b, country, folk, singer-songwriter, musical theater, blues and more.

gfire loves to share her talents with her students. She prides herself on instilling a "sense of mastery" to each of her singing and piano students, no matter on which level they are. The students come away with a real sense of knowing their songs and their instruments inside out and with a real sense of confidence in their musicianship. Plus they have a lot of fun as they make musical progress!

gfire is also an award-winning singer-songwriter and "Yoga for the Voice" innovator. She has released 4 CDs of all-original music and is currently working on her 5th CD, to be released in 2010.

As a teacher, gfire works with students of all levels and all areas of interest. In October 2007, gfire became the only vocal teacher in the Western Hemisphere to gain full certification in the Science of Singing, developed by Ernest G. White of London, England. Her unique voice training program, entitled "Yoga for the Voice," combines this knowledge of the Science of Singing with ancient yoga breathing techniques. This technique allows each voice student to develop a "vocal tune-up" for the voice AND to discover what the natural singing range is and how to use the voice as effectively as possible. With the internet SKYPE technology, gfire teaches voice students all over the world, from Switzerland to the U.K. to New Zealand to New York.

Her vocal students have sung in touring rock bands, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, in successful auditions, in karaoke clubs, in coffee houses and folk clubs, at weddings and for their own enjoyment amongst family and friends. Whatever level of singing training you wish to acquire, she will show you the way to achieve it!

gfire was also the main voice instructor and one of 3 main piano teachers at the Austin branch of Mars Music (now defunct) for 3 1/2 years. In addition to her vocal study and innovation, she has studied piano with top classical and jazz pianists, studied songwriting with Pat Pattison of Berklee College in Boston, gotten her full yoga teaching certification in 2004 and DJ'd at clubs and parties worldwide. For four years straight - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 - she has won the prestigious ASCAPlus Award for professional songwriting.

As a singer-songwriter, gfire continues to write, record and perform with some of the best musicians and engineers in the world, including engineer Stuart Sullivan (Willie Nelson, Sublime, Meat Puppets, etc.), Hammond organ player Ian McLagen (Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart), cellist John Hagen (Lyle Lovett), fiddle/mandolin player Warren Hood (The Waybacks), bassist George Reiff (Ray Wylie Hubbard) and banjo picker Danny Barnes (Bad Livers, Dave Matthews).

gfire's original songs have been played on over 160 radio and television stations worldwide. She has toured in over half of the fifty states, plus the U.K. and Canada.

NEW - gfire is now available to teach WORLDWIDE via SKYPE - so you can have a music lesson in the privacy of your own home!!

Voice lessons - I have created a unique and wonderful vocal method, "Yoga for the Voice," which combines ancient yoga breathing exercises with special vocal exercises to give you a "complete vocal tune-up." These techniques are simple, effective and easily-learned by any student of the voice, from about age 7-107. I love to help you learn to apply these wonderful techniques to learning the songs you wish to learn - whether they are pop, r 'n' b, folk, singer-songwriter, rock, country, opera, musical theater, jazz, etc. "Yoga for the Voice" is just as effective for professional speakers, such as teachers, lawyers, clergymen or actors - we just use a range of notes that is smaller than a singer's range, and we focus on using your speaking voice as effectively and efficiently as possible.

In 3-6 months, you will be able to:

1. master the "breath of fire" and "one-minute breath" - the BEST yoga breaths for singers!
2. master the "sinus humming exercises" - identifying where EACH note in your range originates in your own head
3. master the "full-body exercises" - traditional singing exercises on "mah, mee, moh, moo, meh" - so that you can move easily between your chest voice, middle voice, and head voice
4. master 2-10 songs or more, depending on your level and the level of difficulty of each song - being able to sing each song in TUNE, with feeling, and having a blast doing it!!
5. if you wish, you can perform your song(s) at one of my voice and piano recitals - on a REAL Austin stage!!

Piano lessons - I teach a wide range of piano styles at levels from beginner to early advanced, beginning around age 5. In 3-6 months, you will be able to:

1. master the Leschetizky, hand massage, and isometric warm-up exercises - the BEST piano warm-ups!
2. depending on your level, master Hanon exercises 1-12, major and minor scales, major and minor arpeggios
3. for beginners, you will be able to play with BOTH hands on the treble and bass clefs - at the same time!!
4. master the I-IV-V progression in 3-12 keys, depending on your level - so that you can play blues, rock, country, boogie-woogie, and ragtime songs!!
5. master 4-20 songs or more, depending on your level and the level of difficulty of each song (classical songs tend to take more time to master) - being able to play each song with great technique, with feeling, and having a blast doing it!!
6. if you wish, you can perform your song(s) at one of my voice and piano recitals - on a REAL Austin stage!!

Songwriting lessons - I will teach you how to create a great song, in the style you wish to write in. Country songs, pop songs, rock tunes, r'n' b, folk, etc. - all of these genres have "unwritten rules" about how to put together an effective song. We will utilize special songwriting exercises and tools to help you learn to be a wonderful songwriter.

DJ lessons - I teach beat matching, turntable fine-tuning and repertoire selection to help you become the DJ you aspire to be. I own crates and crates of vinyl records and CDs, and I have DJ'd all over the world to enthusiastic crowds, so I can teach you to attain a real joy and skill in the art of turntablism.
