About Me

***Note to Bloomington, IN students, I will begin teaching as of 8/1/14, if want to sign up for lessons please contact me and I will handle it directly! I am moving from Memphis, TN and that is why it shows no availability. Thank you!***

Lesley is an accomplished classically trained operatic soprano at the beginning of her career. Lesley grew up all over the United States, attending high school in Tennessee where she was very active in high school theatre, playing roles like Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! and Glinda in The Wizard of Oz. Lesley currently sings operatic repertoire ranging from Mozart to Bernstein and loves new composers and exploring new music. Lesley has studied with numerous teachers, coaches, directors, and conductors who have shaped her as a musician, and hopes to be able to impart some of what she has learned. I love to sing, and would love to help you explore singing as well.

I taught in the Atlanta area for four years, as well as New Jersey and Boston, MA. I enjoy working with my students to discover and develop their true voice and passion for music! After studying vocal pedagogy, vocal anatomy, Body Mapping, Alexander Technique, acting, dance, movement, and of course years of musical study, I have honed my skills as a teacher and wants to share them with you! Healthy breathing, physicality, phonation, and resonance techniques are crucial to any style of singing - opera, classical, broadway, or pop. My students have performed in musicals, plays, choirs, and operas. They have received college scholarships, and won national competitions.

I hold a Master's degree in Opera Performance from The Boston Conservatory and a Bachelor's degree cum laude in Vocal Performance from Montclair State University. I attended the summer training programs at the Aspen Music Festival in Aspen, CO and the Seagle Music Colony in the Adirondacks. I have studied acting for over 6 years, and participated in straight theatre, as well as musical theatre. I have also coached with coaches from the Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Atlanta Opera, and many more!

I perform all over memphis, including with Opera Memphis and at St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral. My operatic roles include: Miss Jessel in Britten's, The Turn of the Screw, Mrs. Gobineau in Menotti's The Medium, The Female Chorus in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, Clara Deluso in Pasatieri's Signor Deluso, Magda Sorel in Menotti's The Consul, Geraldine in Menotti's A Hand of Bridge, Ariadne in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, Elisabetta in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Contessa d'Almaviva in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Alice Ford in Verdi's Falstaff, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, and the Second lady in Die Zauberfl te. My theatre roles include: The Witch in Sondheim's Into the Woods, Aunt Eller in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, Marion Hollander in Woody Allen's Don't Drink the Water, Glinda in The Wizard of Oz, Lucy in You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Bobby's Mother in Gershwin's Crazy For You. I am also featured on Albany Records release of Signor Deluso in the role I performed with the Opera Company of Brooklyn. I also perform at St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Suwanee, and am a frequent soloist there. I have performed the soprano solos in Verdi's Requiem, Faure's Requiem, and Gounod's St Cecilia Mass. Recently I worked closely with Stephen Schwartz - creator of the hit Broadway musical Wicked to create the starring role, Myra Foster, in his first opera - Seance on a Wet Afternoon.

In 2010 I was a Metropolitan Opera National Council Semi-Finalist. Most recently, I claimed third place and the Wagner award in the Orpheus National Vocal Competition. I was also recognized for excellence with the Benefactor's Award in the Saritelli DiPanni Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Fund as well as being a semi-finalist in the 2009 Jensen Competition. I enjoyed participating in NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) for many years, placing every year in college, and taking home first prize senior year. In my junior year, I won my entire division for the Eastern Regional NATS competitions. I also participated in the All State choirs for 3 years in high school, taking first chair soprano 1 in my senior year, and being awarded a solo.

Liesl M. Live Oak, CA

Subjects Taught

Choir, Classical Voice, Ear Training, Musical Theater, Music Performance, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Vocal Training

About Me

A well-rounded and healthy individual will make the healthiest singer, with creative ideas for interpretation. The teaching of voice to integrate historical vocal pedagogy and newer, scientific methods of voice instruction is my preferred way to approach singing in the voice student. This next generation of singers in today’s conservatories are trained with the beauty of the Bel Canto technique and the knowledge of voice specialists, which is something truly remarkable. The tried and true methods of the Manuel Garcias and Mathilde Marchesi should be preserved for singers in a way that also acknowledges the growing field of laryngeal and voice science and pathology. Incorporating techniques of Yoga and Holistic Health practice into the voice studio can only help us to eliminate the bodily harm of regularly performing and the stressful lives that go into being a singer.

Holistic Health and Yoga studies were both integrated into my undergraduate curriculum at San Francisco State University, giving me a mere glimpse into the wealth of knowledge of these fields. Even a brief understanding of the improvements in posture you can gain from a regular yoga practice or integrating Alexander Techniques into the studio can not only extricate pain in the body, but allow for improvement of breath and vocal tone as a result.

My official bio:

Liesl is a soprano originally from Yuba City, California. She recently completed her Master of Music from Westminster Choir College in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. She completed her undergraduate studies in 2011 at San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance.

In February, 2014 Liesl performed as a guest artist for the 50th Anniversary of the Frank V. de Bellis Collection at the J Paul Leonard Library at her Alma Mater, San Francisco State University, in San Francisco, CA. She sang the role of Abelle in a special presentation the Scarlatti Oratorio Il Primo Omicidio with other selected SF State alumni.

During her graduate studies, Liesl sang the roles of Madame Herz in Der Schauspieldirektor, Antonia in Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, and Tytania in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream with Westminster Opera Theater. Liesl was also an active participant in the opera workshop class taught by Nova Thomas, singing the roles of Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, and Konstanze in Die Entfƒ¼hrung aus dem Serail. Liesl also enjoys work behind the curtain, and directed scenes from The Marriage of Figaro and The Merry Widow. In November, 2013, Liesl participated in a masterclass with soprano Dawn Upshaw. In Summer, 2013, Liesl was an Opera Fellow at Rider University's CoOPERAtive Program. There, she sang in masterclasses with Kathleen Kelly (University of Texas) and Pierre Vallet (Tokyo Opera, Metropolitan Opera). This program also offered the fantastic chance to receive private dramatic coaching with director Amy Hutchison (Chicago Lyric Opera).

In the first year at Westminster, graduate students participate in the Westminster Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Joe Miller. Here, Liesl was able to sing with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Yannick Nezet-Seguin, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, and the Simon Bolivar orchestra under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. This experience provided the chance to perform in such locations as the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Before beginning graduate studies, Liesl taught Vocal Techniques at Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts. There, she also served as the vocal coach & accompanist for the lead roles and chorus in the school's musical, She Loves Me. In Marysville and Yuba City she sang with Borgamaria Lyric Opera, Sutter Performing Arts Association, and was a soloist in Handel's Messiah with the Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society.

In undergraduate studies at San Francisco State, she appeared as Esmeralda in The Bartered Bride, Flipote in Tartuffe, and in numerous scenes productions with the opera workshop. As a soloist, she sang excerpts from the role of Maria in a West Side Story vignette under the direction of Vance George, as well as singing as a soloist in Mendelssohn's Ave Maria. In April, 2011, she placed first in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Bay Area Chapter festival for Art Songs. Among her experiences, Liesl was a member of the San Francisco State Chamber Singers, University Chorus, Women's Chorus and Afro-Cuban Ensemble. Outside of school, she stayed active in the Bay Area performing arts community, singing chorus with the San Francisco Lyric Opera, Urban Opera, and Golden Gate Opera.

Gfire Austin, TX

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, SAT, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice

About Me

gfire has been teaching music full-time for over 16 years. Based in Austin, Texas, the "Live Music Capital of the World," she offers voice, piano, songwriting and DJ'ing lessons to students from 5-105 and she specializes in sculpting her lessons to the strengths and desires of each individual student. Her students range from beginning to advanced levels, and they sing and play a multitude of musical styles, including classical, pop, rock, r 'n' b, country, folk, singer-songwriter, musical theater, blues and more.

gfire loves to share her talents with her students. She prides herself on instilling a "sense of mastery" to each of her singing and piano students, no matter on which level they are. The students come away with a real sense of knowing their songs and their instruments inside out and with a real sense of confidence in their musicianship. Plus they have a lot of fun as they make musical progress!

gfire is also an award-winning singer-songwriter and "Yoga for the Voice" innovator. She has released 4 CDs of all-original music and is currently working on her 5th CD, to be released in 2010.

As a teacher, gfire works with students of all levels and all areas of interest. In October 2007, gfire became the only vocal teacher in the Western Hemisphere to gain full certification in the Science of Singing, developed by Ernest G. White of London, England. Her unique voice training program, entitled "Yoga for the Voice," combines this knowledge of the Science of Singing with ancient yoga breathing techniques. This technique allows each voice student to develop a "vocal tune-up" for the voice AND to discover what the natural singing range is and how to use the voice as effectively as possible. With the internet SKYPE technology, gfire teaches voice students all over the world, from Switzerland to the U.K. to New Zealand to New York.

Her vocal students have sung in touring rock bands, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, in successful auditions, in karaoke clubs, in coffee houses and folk clubs, at weddings and for their own enjoyment amongst family and friends. Whatever level of singing training you wish to acquire, she will show you the way to achieve it!

gfire was also the main voice instructor and one of 3 main piano teachers at the Austin branch of Mars Music (now defunct) for 3 1/2 years. In addition to her vocal study and innovation, she has studied piano with top classical and jazz pianists, studied songwriting with Pat Pattison of Berklee College in Boston, gotten her full yoga teaching certification in 2004 and DJ'd at clubs and parties worldwide. For four years straight - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 - she has won the prestigious ASCAPlus Award for professional songwriting.

As a singer-songwriter, gfire continues to write, record and perform with some of the best musicians and engineers in the world, including engineer Stuart Sullivan (Willie Nelson, Sublime, Meat Puppets, etc.), Hammond organ player Ian McLagen (Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart), cellist John Hagen (Lyle Lovett), fiddle/mandolin player Warren Hood (The Waybacks), bassist George Reiff (Ray Wylie Hubbard) and banjo picker Danny Barnes (Bad Livers, Dave Matthews).

gfire's original songs have been played on over 160 radio and television stations worldwide. She has toured in over half of the fifty states, plus the U.K. and Canada.
