About Me

I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For the past 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic roots band that performs an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. I also have a cabaret/art song project consisting or original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

About Me

Now teaching in-person singing and acting lessons in Chicago, as well as online to anyone in the country!

Serena is originally from the New York City area and has been acting, singing, dancing, and playing piano since she was young. As a teenager, she attended the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan and went on to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. While she was there, she realized her love of teaching when she tutored struggling piano and music theory students.

In Chicago, her credits include: The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors, Macbeth, Jersey Shore: The Musical, Jack and the Beanstalk, Theatre of Women 6, Pirates of Penzance, Change the Night Owl, and two solo cabarets: "Should I Be Sweet?" and "I Don't Want To Be a Cliche."

Other notable credits include Tony N' Tina's Wedding, The Taming of the Shrew, Bat Boy, Les Miserables, Major Barbara, as well as various cabarets at Don't Tell Mama and the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Serena also has performed alongside James Taylor and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Serena loves working with people who particularly share her love of Musical Theater and Shakespeare, but she finds all ages and levels exciting and fulfilling.

Serena also specializes in coaching high school students for their auditions for BFA or BA Acting or Musical Theater programs. She is completely informed about the audition process for each individual school and is able to help select repertoire to fit your needs.

I have a very good balance in my lessons of nurturing the student, but also pushing the student to his or her highest potential. I always remain encouraging and supportive. I spend about a third of the lesson on technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. You will get excellent vocal and piano technique from me, but you will also learn to have fun and appreciate the ease and relaxation of singing and playing piano.

*** Studio Equipment ***
F/w keyboard, seating for parents - main room

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in musical theater singing, especially preparation for any auditions (singing or acting) for shows, college auditions, etc. Musical theater is my main passion, but I also focus a lot on pop music. I am especially experienced in introducing newbies to singing or piano.

About Me

Greetings and welcome to my Studio Profile,

As a professional singer and teacher, I strive for artistic excellence and customer satisfaction. I want you to be excited about your voice and the progress you are making and will do everything I can to support your growth and progress. I have 10 years of experience in private teaching and would be delighted to apply this knowledge to help you reach your musical goals, whether auditioning for your school musical, preparing for college auditions, joining a church choir, or auditioning for an opera company.
I teach a variety of musical styles including classical, musical theater, jazz, and some pop. My goal is for you to discover ease and freedom in your singing, increase your range and vocal stamina, introduce you to different styles of music, and ultimately equip you to sing with confidence and meet your personal musical goals.

I graduated with highest honors with a Bachelor's degree in Voice Performance from University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and recently completed my Master's degree in Voice Pedagogy and Performance from Westminster Choir College, graduating with distinction. My studies have taken me abroad to performing programs in Austria, Italy, Serbia, and Canada. I am an active performer and am experienced singing opera, classical music, jazz, musical theater, choral music, a Capella and Baroque chamber music. I am currently singing with the Chicago Master Singers and recently toured with them to Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia.

In addition to private voice lessons, I am trained to tutor music theory, music history, sight reading, beginning cello, and Singing diction for Latin, Italian, French, and German.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your musical goals in person!

Please feel free to contact TakeLessons with any questions.

Warmly,
Sara L.

Lesson Structure:
5-10 min. warming up your voice
10-15 min. vocal strengthening exercises and solfege (to improve sight-reading and musical skills)
20 min. repertoire coaching
5 min. final questions and assignment for the next week.

Open door policy: Should you ever have questions or concerns about your voice or progress, please feel free to contact TakeLessons at any time and we are happy to discuss with you.

Repertoire: I am happy to work with you on the songs that you are interested in learning. I also enjoy finding repertoire for you and introducing you to different styles. About Me

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in the arts and natural sciences. I'm a voice instructor, math tutor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance.

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I am currently performing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat at the Booth Tarkington Theatre. I was a finalist in the MasterWorks Festival concerto competition. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz and pop. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be produced in a way that does not damage the vocal folds.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectations that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique form day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I teach an open throat technique called appoggio. It is the technique opera singers use, but can be applied to any music style. This technique allows the singer to sing with their entire voice using a relaxed larynx. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music, subscription to IPA source (foreign language translations and pronunciations), several math and science textbooks

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.
