About Me

Gabe has been playing the drums for twenty years and has been teaching students for about twelve years. In that time he has played with numerous live acts as well as studio work. His experience mostly lies in jazz, funk, blues, latin, and rock. As much as he loves playing these styles he loves to teach them. Gabe's music education began in grammar school and continued through high school. In college he earned a non-music bachelor's degree but never stopped studying the drums. With the help of his own private instructors and continued playing experience, he now considers himself a self-taught musician and uses this experience to show his students how to do the same. His students can expect a challenging curriculum that will make them better players no matter what style of music they play.

Gabe has played with or shared a stage with countless musicians including Average White Band, The Waz, Moe., Moxy Fruvous, Schleiho, Entropy, and Ike Stubblefield. He now plays out regularly and teaches in the Atlanta area where he lives with his wife and two-year-old son.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching philosophy centers around the idea that if the student is willing to put in hard work and dedication he or she can accomplish their goals. I try to put an emphasis on hard work and strong practice habits and the benefits that come as a result. That being said, in my lessons I try to keep a fun and laid back atmosphere where the student is not afraid to make mistakes. I expect students to make mistakes so that we can learn from these mistakes. I find that many times new and creative ideas are born from mistakes.

Because every musician is unique, each student is evaluated on an individual basis and a personal curriculum is created that fits the student's needs and goals. Once these goals are charted out a solid foundation of rudiments, technique, and posture is created (or maintained in many cases) for the student to build upon.

The student's goals remain the main focus of the lesson plan. I do not teach in order to create or mold musicians. This is up to the student. I want the student's individualism and creativity to shine through. Students are encouraged to interpret what is taught not to mimic. Soon we will form a relationship in which I start to learn things from the student as well.

I teach out of various books depending on which styles the student wants to learn and accompany them with music to listen to and play along with. I also ask the student to bring some examples of his or her favorite music and drummers so we can dissect what these musicians are doing to better learn from them. Within time the student will be transcribing the music of other drummers as well as writing their own grooves and exercises. With some individual hard work and dedication the student will become a better drummer and over all better student of music.

I bring my own sticks, books, a pad and a drum with stand. I expect the student to have at least their own pad and sticks.

The music I personally like to play and listen to is funk, jazz, blues and latin. I love to teach these styles and to challenge my students to learn these styles. I make sure students have a strong foundation of rudiments. I then show them how to use them creatively and to apply them to the drum set musically. I also put a strong emphasis on groove, keeping time and learning how to play as a member of a group, not just a drummer but a musician.

Hello! I'm Tony. I'm a forensic accountant, with a master's degree in accountancy, a bachelor's in economics, and work with an accounting firm in Alpharetta, GA.

I have over a decade of experience behind the drum set, including over 150 live performances and studio experience on 8 demos, EPs, and albums. I've drummed for projects in the styling of rock, funk, metal & hardcore, and have been a member of 6 actively performing bands and played with 2 churches. Over the past 6 years, I have also played guitar in 3 bands, one of which I am currently a member. Additionally, I immensely enjoy playing classical guitar and studying baroque and chamber music. My introduction to music was 5 years of saxophone in my middle school and high school's concert, pep, and jazz bands.

With my experience across woodwind, string, and percussive instruments, as well as my formal education, I bring a very well-rounded approach to lessons. I thoroughly understand what it takes to learn a new instrument as well as methods for sharpening and building upon prior knowledge, especially techniques to help surmount plateaus.

Before any instruction begins, I need to first learn about you, your musical experiences, goals and overall reason for taking lessons. This will define the context of the lessons and provide structure for the curriculum. Once instruction begins, first and foremost, regardless of the purpose of the lessons, it must be an enjoyable experience. Music is all about having fun.

The lessons will begin at whatever level is appropriate with respect to prior experience and desired goals. This will also determine at what pace the curriculum progresses. Students with little or no experience will have curriculum which breaks the drum set down to the distinct elements, a process that involves sheet music along with specific drumming exercises. If a mastery of basic drum set technique is already possessed and demonstrated, then lessons will include advanced poly-rhythmic exercises as well as learning songs as a supplement. All levels of instruction will include "homework".

Those students seeking to learn drumming in a studio setting will receive heavy emphasis on playing with a metronome, memorization, and precision and accurate subdivision of notes. Students learning live performance will receive an emphasis on improvisation, multiple instrument dynamics, and stamina.

I could provide an entire kit, if need be. The student would not need to provide anything.

About Me

I'm a freelance drummer and teacher working in the Gwinnett County area. I have been playing in and around Atlanta since 1979 and moved here in 1981. I have been teaching for the Gwinnett School Of Music since 1997 and currently have 25 full-time students. I continue to perform on a regular basis with several local acts and work a few months a year with a local middle school percussion section. I received an early education in marching and symphonic music under band director John V. Mazza and had the privilege of marching with the 1st place trophy winning Prince George High School Band of Petersburg, Virginia in the 1969 Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California. During the 70s I toured throughout the southeast and midwest with a variety of bands based out of Panama City, and Miami, Florida.

I try to tailor the lessons to the desire and goals of the student but I encourage all to learn to read, develop good practice skills and most of all...have fun. It's supposed to be fun, that's why it's called playing. I generally start a beginning student with the Alfred snare drum method for learning to read and develop hand coordination then get them into playing a full drum set as soon as possible. I am willing to work from any book the student has or prefers and I also draw from many publications I have in my arsenal. My studio is equipped with 2 full drum sets and a PA system for playing to recordings or to jam with me playing guitar or bass to develop live performance skills. After 3 months students should have a basic knowledge of reading and enough coordination to play basic beats on the drum set. By six months the student should be able to play along to recorded music and other musicians. I try to keep lessons fun and laid back with a strong focus on the task at hand.

It is not necessary for a student to own drums to begin lessons but I recommend getting them as soon as possible to help maintain interest and practice at home.

I will provide a variety of teaching materials and always have extra sticks.

The student is to provide sticks, an Alfred Snare Drum Method Book 1 and a staff paper notebook. Books are optional depending on the goals of the student but are encouraged.

I am a native of Atlanta, Georgia who has been studying music for 17 years. My first instrument was the piano at age 6, and I began playing percussion in my middle school band when I was 11. My deep love of music drove me to pursue a Bachelor of Music Performance degree, which I earned Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia in 2012. In college, I studied percussion with Tim Adams, retired principal timpanist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Music (and especially percussion) is an exciting and enormous world that I am eager to share with you, either at your home or in my studio. I am a patient, funny, and outgoing teacher who caters to your specific needs as a student. While I have studied classical music for many years, I also offer lessons in popular music styles, including rock, jazz, funk, and hip-hop.

I frequently perform as a freelance musician and recording artist, playing anything from drum set in my rock band Young Mahler to solo musical saw. I have performed nationally and internationally with ROC, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Arts!Oglethorpe, Athena Opera, Chamber Cartel, Classic City Jazz, Oconee Youth Playhouse, and numerous groups around the southeast.

I strongly believe in the idea of constant positive re-enforcement when it comes to teaching music. Negativity leads to tension, and tension is NOT conducive to learning. I am an enthusiastic and gentle educator, but I will firmly drive you or your child to achieve musical goals in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Motivation is essential to practice, and the importance of practice could never be overstated. This is why I stress positivity! I ask only that you come to your lesson prepared and unafraid of making mistakes.

As a beginning musical student, you can expect to have the fundamentals of reading and comprehending written music within 3 to 6 months. On the day of your first lesson, we'll discuss your goals and interests, and I will recommend books and materials to aid you on your journey. I will systematically teach you the basic rudiments and techniques that are essential to proper hand and finger movement; I'll also teach you mental techniques to ensure great practice. As an intermediate or advanced student, we'll discuss your previous education and musical interests, and I'll direct you towards the styles you want to pursue. We'll also work on concepts of music theory and performance.

Since performance is an important part of music, I will coordinate an optional recital in the spring for students to showcase their hard work and talent. This low-stress concert will be held at a local school or community center and will surely be a great experience for all those involved.

I offer lessons from my smoke-free, family home studio, but I am more than willing to travel to you, depending on your location.

I was trained classically, so I am happy to pass on a love of classical music through lessons. However, I have been playing jazz and popular music since high school and am also knowledgeable in these genres.
