About Me

Maria Elise T. is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree while on music scholarship at Baylor University, and received a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at Louisiana State University, also with the reward of a music scholarship. While at Baylor, she studied with renowned voice teacher and pedagogue Dr. John Van Cura. She learned much of her teaching style during her time spent with Dr. Van Cura. She teaches a very thorough base for singing incorporating efficient, healthy breathing and posture. Maria uses her artistry and creativity to cater to the specific needs and learning specifications of each student, vocalists and pianists alike.

Maria spent 2 consecutive summers with Des Moines Metro Opera. She has performed many roles, most recently the Miss Dara with the Ninth Ward Opera. She has also performed Mimi in La Boheme, the title role in Vanessa, La Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro, and the title roles in both Floyd’s Susannah and Puccini’s Suor Angelica.

Maria won 2nd Place at the Gulf Coast Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in January 2010. Called by critics a “thoughtful, powerful and thrilling” singer, she has been awarded prizes in other competitions, including the Lois Alba Competition, NATS, Entergy Young Texas Artists’ Music Competition and Festival Note d’estate a Campolieto.

About Me

Music has been a part of my life since I was a child. I started singing in choirs around 7, and started piano lessons at 8. I am a graduate of Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelors of Music Education, and am currently pursuing my masters degree in vocal performance there. I also am a soloist at Trinity Episcopal Church, and am a member of the New Orleans Opera Chorus. This past July, I was a resident artist at the International Performing Arts Institute in Kiefersfelden, Germany.
I love music, and I love teaching! I've been studying music since I was a child, and want to give as many people as possible the chance to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from making music. Whatever your musical goals are--whether you want to sing or play for recitals, competitions, your friends and family, or just yourself--I can help you achieve them. Whether you're interested in classical, Broadway, sacred, or popular music, I'm willing to help you learn more. I am warm and welcoming, and believe that a relaxed student is a happy student, and happy students learn more.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice and piano lessons are a partnership between you, the student, and me, the teacher, and we both play a role in your progress and success. Learning cannot happen without a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and adequate preparation and practice. This is what I hope to see from my students, and will give the same in return.

After a few months in the studio, my voice students can expect to have a better grasp of how the voice works and the tools and techniques needed to produce a consistent, healthy, beautiful sound. Piano students can expect to know proper finger and hand positioning and technique-building scales and etudes. Both piano and voice students will have a knowledge of how to read music and music theory.

Singing and playing are fun--why else would we do either of them? It's my goal to help you learn and have a good time while doing so.

*** Specialties ***
Broadway, art song, arias, recitative, oratorio, sacred music, choral music

Jay S. New Orleans, LA

Subjects Taught

Arrangement and Composition, Audition Prep, Ear Training, Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano, Singing, Songwriting, Synthesizer

About Me

Hi, call me Jay. It's a nickname for Jeremi. Welcome to my profile!

When it comes to music, for me, self expression is most important. Music communicates more than words alone. I've studied with the great musical families and famous instructors of New Orleans, my home town. I began as a self taught child 3 years of age. I began formal study at 5. By age 12, I began to perform professionally and by 15 was directing various choirs and ensembles in churches and musical theater companies.

I've enjoyed studying and performing all styles of the U.S. and globe. I've toured the U.S. and abroad with acts from Digable Planets to Heatwave. I am a performer/song writer/recording artist/director/instructor. I love each aspect but am quite fond of teaching. The greatest reward is sharing the magic that music has been in my life.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to laugh and have fun. I always ask if you're well and give whatever exciting update I may have. My students can expect me to meet them where they are musically. We'll rise to the next level together. My teaching style is always customized to the student after a proper introduction. I do encourage excellence and do not accept excuses. Learning can be fun, and as long as my students practice what is given, it will be! I intend to be prepared to instruct to the best of my ability and only require that my students be prepared and ready to be challenged in a fun way.

Sometimes learning fundamentals can seem slow. I ask all students to trust that once the foundation is laid, we can really take off at an exciting pace. With my system, after six months, a beginner is ready for recital. Intermediate students can play a pro gig. Advanced students can hit that level they've longed after.

*** Studio Equipment ***
HOME: lessons in living room, digital piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
Portable digital piano

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Jazz, Blues, Country, Latin, Reggae, R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, Electronic, World, Pop. I tend to prefer super learning methods wherein a student is given a brief crash course then immediate opportunity to apply what was taught and praised heavily for their effort. You'll be surprised what you can already do! Then the material is studied in depth. I like to teach after the student and I have had just a little bit of fun together.

About Me

Ready to start learning with a private teacher is passionate about helping you achieve your goals?

Whether you are searching for a teacher of children or adults, I stand at-the-ready.

My chosen career is PRIVATE musical instruction. While I can work in the classroom, my joy lies in helping individuals unlock their musical potential. In my studio you will be warmly received, listened to, and assessed (kindly) in order for me to learn how you learn best. Once I know what you know, and how you learn, I will devise a plan to help you learn what you want and need to know.

I specialize in teaching children (as young as 5). My studio is extremely child friendly. However, learners of all ages are welcome

My degree, from Otterbein College, is in music education. I am well-versed in various schools of vocal and piano pedagogy, and I put my knowledge of various pedagogical techniques to use. I draw from a wealth of knowledge and experience in order to help you learn.

I am no stranger to private lessons. I have taught privately for over 15 years. This is what I do (not a side gig to help ends meet). Your musical learning is not an afterthought to me, squeezed into a busy schedule. Your ARE my job, and I take my job seriously.

A typical lesson consists of 30 mins (though longer lesson times are available) For young learners, 30 minutes is plenty. Students will do a lot a playing, clapping and, often, moving, in my studio in order to untangle technically difficult passages. I am an excellent songwriter and arranger, and you will learn how to become comfortable approaching music learning from many angles. (Sometimes we will focus more on music reading, sometimes more on arranging or writing)

Most of all, you will ENJOY your lessons. I have won over even the most unmotivated students (I have my ways).

I am currently scheduling for the month of January onward, and truly welcome and value the opportunity to coach you.
