She completed her Bachelor of Music degree while on music scholarship at Baylor University, and received a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at Louisiana State University, also with the reward of a music scholarship. While at Baylor, she studied with renowned voice teacher and pedagogue Dr. John Van Cura. She learned much of her teaching style during her time spent with Dr. Van Cura. Maria is a joy to work with; I highly recommend taking her voice class! She creates an easygoing, fun, and instructive session that helps you understand methods for improving your vocal performance. I've had teachers in the past that simply worked with me on songs and "stage presence," however this is the first experience I've had where I'm confident that the lessons (posture, breathing, vocalizing, etc) will continue to transform my voice over time. Her fundamentals basically re-trained my voice and the impact was both immediate and long-lasting. I've recommended her to other family members and I believe they are also having similar positive experiences! If singing is your passion and you want to improve through a professional and pleasant experience - this is money well spent!

Just like a piano, flute or violin, your voice is an instrument.
The purpose of voice lessons is to help you to develop a beautiful and dynamic singing voice and also to teach you to use your voice in a healthy age-appropriate way that will keep you singing for many years to come!
As your teacher, I want your lesson to be more than just singing through a few songs.
While what specifically happens during a voice lesson can vary greatly from student to student and from week to week, the overall structure of the lessons remains similar.
We will always start with some combination of warm-ups for your breath, body, and voice. Just as you wouldn't go running without first stretching and warming up your muscles, you don't want to start singing full songs without first getting your body and voice warmed up.
Warm-ups will also introduce you to new techniques for properly using your voice in a healthy and beautiful way.
After warm-ups, we will work on songs. Typically, you will sing ...

I am learning so much already from my teacher. She is patient and professional as well as really nice. My grand mom loves when I take my lesson at her house so she can hear me sing with Denise. My mom thinks she will be a great piano teacher for me too. I cannot wait to start piano lessons with Denise next.

There are very few teachers who can balance passion, compassion, skills, and ability all the while coaching with understanding and humor. They say those that can't teach. Well, not in this case. She CAN and DOES, both teach and perform at a very high level. In the past, there have been numerous times when I have signed up for a class and after a few weeks, have dreaded attending because it was not what I was expecting. With Denise, this is certainly not the case. I have enjoyed working with her and have learned more in 10 months than in my previous 54 years. I highly recommend her to anyone! Thanks Denise.

I have been learning with Melanie for about 9 months. I think she is an excellent teacher and singer whose expertise covers a wide range of musical genres from opera to classical art song and jazz. Over the past 9 months, she has focused on improving my vocal technique and I have been able to learn quickly because she is an effective communicator of ideas and information. Melanie has also helped me enter into the New Orleans music scene and regularly suggests auditions or other singing opportunities I might be interested in trying. I really enjoy my lessons with Melanie and I can highly recommend her.

I have 9 years of vocal experience in Baton Rouge. I began taking lessons with Melanie about 2.5 months ago. We have worked on musical theatre, opera, and jazz. She is very knowledgeable in all of these genres. Melanie is a great instructor that really knows what to say and what visuals to use to get a different sound. It has been interesting to see the differences in my voice since beginning with Melanie.
Since beginning with Melanie, I have been on 4 auditions, 2 callbacks, and have been cast in a show. I would not have known about these auditions without Melanie and she gave me the confidence to excel. Melanie is a great resource to use for audition information and performance opportunities.
If you are just starting out or if you are looking to continue with vocal lessons, Melanie is a great teacher and I would highly recommend her to anyone.

Talented teacher and motivator

I have been taking lessons with Melanie for about four months. I initially contacted her to prepare for a part in a musical I wanted. Melanie helped me hone my talent, as well as find confidence in my voice as a singer. I came to her as an untrained, unskilled singer looking for guidance. Two months after I started taking lessons, I was asked to perform with a cruise ship live band (while I was on vacation) in Carnival's Showcase of the Stars talent show. Melanie inspired me to audition for several musicals I normally wouldn't have had the courage to pursue. She is always available when I need her, even if I need to schedule a last minute lesson or have a technical question I need answered. I owe my success thus far in my performance career to Melanie, and I proudly recommend her without hesitation.
