About Me

I am a full-time pedagogue/performer with eight years' experience teaching private lessons in voice, piano, and acting to a range of ages and levels of students. Although the majority of my students are young adults, I have worked successfully with children, teenagers, and adult students (twenties to senior citizens) of both genders; I tailor my approach specifically to the goals and interests of each student; no two people learn the same way.
I hold a Bachelor's of Music in vocal performance from West Virginia University (summa cum laude, WVU Outstanding Senior, Honors College J. and C. Nath Outstanding Senior, Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships candidate). I regularly perform as a soloist in opera, oratorio, concerts, and recitals and completed training through the Ezio Pinza Concil for American Singers of Opera in Italy, the American Singers' Opera Project of North Carolina, and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
As a teacher, I completed a year-long vocal pedagogy course with Cynthia Bess which provided me with a thorough understanding of the anatomy and psychology of singing, as well as a systematic approach to the correction of vocal faults. In the spring of 2010, one of my students, a teen-aged boy, was selected to attend Eastman's summer program for high school students. Several of my students have performed leading roles in school, community, and university musical productions.
I hold a full voting membership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, am a Licensed Kindermusik Educator, am employed as Director of Music Ministry for a fairly large church, and was recently awarded the National Pastoral Musician's organ certification. I was also a teaching artist at Propel East Charter School for Greensburg American Opera and directed the Old Economy Singers (a twenty-voice historical choir) for six years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I provide professional, knowledgeable, and individualized instruction in a supportive and encouraging environment. During the course of study with me, I expect voice students will improve vocal technique and sound quality, alleviate physical tension which may be interfering with phonation, expand their range, learn new repertoire, increase confidence, and grow as performing artists.
My vocal teaching method focuses on correct breathing and resonance; I also incorporate some activities from Barry Green's "Inner Game of Music" technique. Although my teaching is grounded in a scientific approach to the process of phonation, I also believe singing should be a fun experience for the student. We sing to communicate! I believe that a thorough technical foundation is necessary for free and healthy singing in any genre of music. I am willing to work with students in the vocal styles that interest them most; although my professional performance experience is in opera and musical theatre, I have also successfully worked with students whose interests included jazz, pop, rock, folk music, contemporary Christian music, and choral singing.
My piano pedagogical method matches each student with the right curriculum-- Alfred, Schaum, or Piano Adventures-- plus supplemental technical exercises such as scales, arpeggios, and Czerny and Hanon exercises. All students are exposed to theory through worksheets, games, and other applied activities. As soon as possible, I introduce "real" repertoire from master composers.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Grand piano, electronic piano, music library, photo copier for copies of repertoire, music stands, Sing and See software.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide copies of music and exercises. If I am teaching at a student's home, I expect him/her to provide a keyboard instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I believe that a strong technical foundation emphasizing correct breathing and placement will allow voice students to sing in a healthy manner in any style of music. My professional performance credentials are primarily in opera, but I also have musical theatre experience and have successfully worked with students whose interests include opera, musical theatre, jazz, pop, rock, gospel, Irish folk music, and choral singing. In piano lessons, I emphasize technique and musicianship through a balance of exercises, repertoire, and theory activities.

Subjects Taught

Bible Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Science, Violin

About Me

I began studying violin in 1991 when I was 7 years old. I have been under a teacher or orchestra director almost continuously since that time up until the last couple years. More recently, I joined a folk band in Mississippi and performed here and there, once even being requested in Panama City Beach! I began teaching students in 2001 and have taught since then. I have a passion for showing others my love for music and inspiring the same love within them.
I studied music under Mr. Matt Stott in Vero Beach, FL for 3 years and then moved to Miami for college. At FIU, I studied under Mr. Ivan Chan and Ms. Cathy Meng Robinson of the Miami String Quartet.

While at FIU, I studied Biology and Chemistry as a double major for 3 years until I discovered that, while I excelled at the program of study, I didn't want to be a doctor. Not seeing any other palatable jobs in those fields, I went on to get my Bachelors' degree in Psychology within 2 years. I immediately went to Graduate school in Mississippi to study Marriage and Family Therapy. I obtained my Masters' degree and returned to Miami to work part time as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Intern. My husband was deployed with the Army National Guard to the Middle East during my time in Miami. When he returned, he took a job in Pittsburgh. Here in the 'Burgh, I primarily have tutored in the Sciences, but am looking forward to teaching music once again. I enjoy teaching students and bringing the light of music into their lives. I look forward to meeting you and to working with you as you take the journey into the beautiful realms of music.

*** Violin Lesson Details ***
I strongly believe that each student is different and therefore I tailor each students' lesson to their needs and strengths. I am a flexible teacher, willing to teach what you want to learn. I will give you a strong foundation of classical technique and then help you develop your skills so that you can succeed in any genre of music.
I do not have a very strict approach to teaching; I prefer to inspire by encouragement. However, if a parent prefers a more direct and structured approach, I can teach in that way also. Student motivation is very important, so I like to encourage my students by offering them reasons to be motivated. These differ for each student.
I mainly use the Suzuki method of teaching, but I can work in other pieces of music and other approaches that better suit the needs of my students. Within 3 months of studying with me, a committed beginner student can expect to have a functional, practical understanding of how the instrument works and have learned 2 pieces. I like teaching students to play songs right away so that they do not get discouraged or bogged down with theory and not get to experience the thrill of making music themselves.

*** Specialties ***
Foundational Suzuki, contemporary, folk, worship, classical
