About Me

Music is the means to create a portal into our souls, so that we may see each other for who and what we are, not merely as what we do. I want to help foster those young, middle-aged, and not-as-young how to tap into their own soul portals through music so that they may find others' as well. I believe that in order to entertain others with your voice or your instrument playing, one must first be able to entertain oneself - all the while having fun doing it! As a recent graduate of the University of California, Davis with a double major in Music History & Ethnomusicology and African-American & African Studies; a former co-host of the popular hip-hop radio show ATF Radio: All Things Fresh on KDVS 90.3 FM; a former Music Director of The Afterglow of UC Davis; and a current Vocal Music Performance graduate student at the University of Redlands, I have come in contact and learned from a vast amount of different musicians and professionals. A classically-trained bass-baritone with roots in R&B, Soul, Rock, Pop, and Jazz, I have aspirations to help each and every student realize their full musical potential.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is very friendly, inviting, and audience-driven. In the beginning, I strive to refer to my presence in the lessons as a fly-on-the-wall, so to speak, in order for my students to get out of their own way and sing as if no one's watching. From there, I apply the audience aspect - singing not only for enjoyment, but for entertainment for yourself and for others as well. If one is able to build that frame of mind in their lessons, their actual performances will not be too far from what they've already dealt with before.

I provide teaching and repertoire books, as well as instrumentation for myself (i.e. guitar, misc. tools for specific lessons). I expect my students to provide a piano (or keyboard equivalent), pitch pipe, and instrument if applicable (i.e. guitar), and, of course, themselves!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Vocal Room with Piano; Keyboard, Classical Guitar, Electric Guitar with Amp (for in-home lessons)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide teaching and repertoire books, as well as instrumentation for myself (i.e. guitar, misc. tools for specific lessons). I expect students to provide a piano (or keyboard equivalent), pitch pipe, and instrument if applicable (i.e. guitar).

*** Specialties ***
I utilize the Kodaly method for vocal performance, starting at the basic level of tonal scales (major, minor, harmonic, melodic, etc.) and Solfege application to serve as a foundational base; rhythm syllables such as "ta" and "doo". Additionally, foundational breath control is applied, as it is very important for the singer to learn how to control their breath and support their sound. From there, repertoire mimicry is applied, or what I call "phrase building," as it is important for any singer to be able to effectively create vocal phrases.

I utilize guitar repertory books such as Mel Bay's Children's Guitar Chord Book and Modern Classical Guitar Method books for guitar pedagogy. These allow the student to learn chords, picking and fingering techniques in a academic lesson while also learning performance techniques with an one-on-one instructor.

For piano, I use the publication A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony to learn chord progressions, sequences, modulations, realization of both figured and un-figured basses, improvisation, and score reading. Learning these techniques will help transition students seamlessly to various styles and genres that incorporate the piano, helping you learn and love the piano without frustrating stoppages that often lead us away from lesson continuity.

I specialize in Classical, R&B, Soul, Pop, Rock, Jazz and Opera styles.

About Me

I am from a musical family of several generations, all the way back to my great grandfather! I am the niece of acclaimed Jazz Trombonist Urbie Green, the cousin and ( I'm told ) the first classical piano inspiration of award-winning Jazz Pianist Jesse Green.

Among my other relatives have been numerous less-known, yet greatly accomplished professional musicians, from famous name swing bands to New Orleans jazz. Stars and glamour in the music business have been part of me from the time I was a gleam in my parents' eyes.

Although my family's renown is in the jazz idiom, I studied classical piano, sheet music and singing for musical theater from pre-K through high school. My experience has included playing an electric keyboard and singing vocals in a professional, working band.

After playing with bands in high school, as a college music major, making good grades was a piece of cake! I was invited to phi theta kappa honors society, graduated with honors and, with a 4.0 grade point average, was offered an opportunity to study in the professions.

Being from such a musical family, the idea of learning an academic profession sounded exciting, so I graduated University, served an internship, and passed professional licensing exams before I learned that being a " pro " did not guarantee financial security.

Due to the economy, I made a decision to return to my roots. I have dusted off the piano and refreshed my music skills so I may teach quality, private lessons to dedicated students. The variety and extent of my knowledge in music, and my family values, will help you learn what you want!

*** Lesson Details ***

I will be available for beginning and intermediate students. If you have never touched a piano before, you are also welcome! Beginner students may come to the first lesson without books, but if you have books or sheet music you are familiar with, please bring what you have worked with most recently.

Be prepared to start with an evaluation of your abilities ! We will cover posture ( both body and hands ), warm-up exercises and ( surprise ) cool-downs too. After the evaluation we will take a look at what you want to learn, and we will help you find the pathway to make your goals with piano music. After each lesson, you will be able to practice what you have learned on your own, for a week or two, and then we will meet again for a new lesson to re-evaluate what has been accomplished. We will discover your strengths, increase your understanding, and then open the door to what we will work on next.

*** Studio Equipment ***

You get a great view of a beautiful lake, and a fantastic and fun music lesson at the same time !
My humble yet dependable upright studio piano is in the foyer just as you walk in.

*** Travel Equipment ***

The student is expected to provide all instruments, books, and/or any other equipment to use for practice and performance outside of the lessons.

I used to say that you need to have access to a piano or keyboard to learn piano, and that is definitely the best way to learn. If you have access to a computer and not a keyboard, you can still learn to play music with these resources I heard about from George W. Russell, Jr., Professor of Harmony/Piano, Berklee College of Music:

http://www.html5piano.ilinov.eu/
http://www.musictheory.net/piano (This keyboard is mobile friendly, but only has 4 octaves.)

I am sure you will love my studio. I do expect students to do the travelling for music lessons :)

*** Specialties ***

I teach beginning through intermediate students.

Classical piano, music theory, sheet music, vocals with microphone, vocals for stage, acting.

*** Other things I can teach ***

Tutoring for basic studies, including study skills, setting goals and motivation.

Architectural design for buildings, homes, gardens and interiors.

Mythological Goddess Studies and Practical magic.

*** Note regarding dates of certificates and education ***

Dates posted are approximate, and to the best of my recollection without actually having to locate each certificate and find the date on it. If anyone wants the exact date, just ask me and I'll take a look.

About Me

I fully enjoy teaching music and theater to others and spreading the art of performance, reaching out to all generations. I believe in customizing every lesson to be unique for my students in a way that will serve their individual needs. I teach with patience and encouragement and believe that students prosper and improve much more from a positive experience. My lessons are intended to be fun and influential in a positive light that can lead to a rewarding career, hobby, or just for personal enjoyment!

Every since I was a little girl, I have been devoted to the arts. When I began college, I knew that music was my path. As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

*** Lesson Details ***
I begin each voice and acting lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their lesson. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song, sheet music, or monologue (acting students) to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a HUGE help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music office w/ keyboard and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I could bring my keyboard if necessary.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers marked as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25 lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.

About Me

I am President of Southland Opera, a growing and flourishing arts organization that specializes in education outreach and commissioning new works. I also tour nationally as a solo/principal soprano and have worked locally with companies like Los Angeles Opera, Opera Pacific, Opera a la Carte and many other Southern California performing arts organizations. I have a BA in vocal performance from Cal Poly Pomona and have worked as a professional singer and teaching artist for the last twenty-five years. In addition to teaching voice in my studio, I am currently working as a teaching artist with Music Center on Tour, Arts and Services for Disabled and Shakespeare Festival LA. I love to teach, I love when students make breakthroughs, and I love overcoming challenges and solving problems. I specialize in light opera and musical theater. My philosophy is that if a student develops good singing technique, they can sing in any style, from pop music to opera, and keep their voice healthy. No two voices are the same and each of us has our own unique instrument, with the right training that instrument can grow and work at it's optimum. I approach my lessons with humor, putting the student at ease, if the student is comfortable and relaxed, they are more open to learning and their voice will sound much more free and beautiful.

*** Lesson Details ***
The lessons are designed around each student's particular need, especially when it comes to how the student likes to learn, not every person learns the same way, so flexibility is key. The student will be given a solid concept of good breath support, work with matching pitches, singing with a line, producing good tone quality and singing with good diction and projection. The student is ultimately going to learn how to become their own voice teacher, they will learn how to listen to their voice and be able to identify warning signs of vocal trouble and how to prevent and solve problems. After about three months the student will be producing much prettier tone and begin to grasp the concept of breath support. As time moves on, they will build their ability to support their voice, open up their sound so they can get more volume without hurting their instrument and the student will develop a better endurance, being able to sing longer and not tire out too quickly. As the students technique develops and strengthens, they will become more confident. If the student is already performing or has worked to the point where they are ready to start performing, then we will spend more time on interpretation and acting as well as developing a confident stage presence.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***

About Me

I am primarily a composer, guitarist, tenor, pianist and percussionist and I love sharing what I have learned with others and watching my students develop and grow. My goal is to teach my students until they are better than me, so I hold no secrets, tricks or techniques back and I devote my time and energy to help others become the best musicians, artists and people they can be.I have a BA in music composition and a BA in music history, both from California State University, San Bernardino. I play the guitar, bass, piano, drums, orchestral percussion, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, recorder, harmonica and didgeridoo with varying levels of proficiency and have experience in music theory, songwriting, recording, MIDI, arranging, singing (contemporary, broadway and opera), and acting/performing. I have performed in The United States, Austria, Spain, Australia and New Zealand and have 13 years of experience, development, mistakes and successes to offer my students. I love learning new things and have been teaching as a profession since 2007. I am also First Aid & CPR certified, Live Scan fingerprinted, FBI background checked, Safe Environment trained and a Child Abuse Mandated Reporter.

*** Lesson Details ***
I do not use a set curriculum. I prefer to discuss goals and music with my students and their parents to determine what genres, styles and techniques they are most interested in. I then use techniques I have gained through experience along with songs and classical exercises to develop strong technique, a developed ear and the ability to read music. I do expect students to be disciplined, practice regularly, and be prepared for lessons, enabling them to expect the same from me. Whether a student wants to be a classical virtuosi or learn how to play a song they heard on the radio, I will keep the lessons fun and interesting for anyone willing to practice and learn, and I will always to my best to cater to the student's individual needs and goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide all copies of music, handouts, exercises, etc. Students are expected (when applicable) to have an instrument in good, working condition.

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
I form all of my lessons around being able to learn, memorize and play songs, read written musical notation (along with sight-reading & technical exercises), and improvisation (based on scales and exercises).

For guitar and it's relatives (bass, mandolin, ukulele, banjo) I can teach any style or genre of music, including modern tapping techniques, and I also teach TAB notation.

I teach both classical and popular piano, usually combining classical sight reading exercises while learning both classical and popular repertoire.

I have experience acting and singing on stage in both non-musical and musical productions, as well as five years of classical vocal experience singing in high school and collegiate ensembles. Being in these environments has equipped me with the tools and exercises to be able to teach everything from basic singing to fundamentals in broadway and opera.

I also have a small studio in my home where I write and record, providing me with the opportunity to also teach recording, songwriting and music theory.
