My name is Mary and I have been teaching voice, piano, and violin for more than 20 years. I have an undergraduate degree in music, a masters degree in special education, and a doctoral degree in education. I teach lessons at my private studio in Dove Canyon. I offer lessons in piano, voice and violin. I am a professional musical director and have directed over 50 shows. I am also a music therapist and I have special skills in teaching instruments to children with special needs. I love working with kids!
Piano, Violin, Music Performance, Music Theory, Viola
I currently have a studio of 30 students and I hold optional recitals twice a year (sometimes more). The recitals feature students as soloists, in duets, or solo with piano accompaniment. I also like my students to practice playing together and performing for each other at our recitals or performance classes. In the Fall, January, and summer, I adjust the students' lesson schedules based on their schedule needs, so if I do not have a time slot open right now, it may be open end of August/beginning of September or end of December/beginning of January.
I like to find the type of music that creates passion and interest in my students, so that they want to practice on their own. Sometimes the students don't know what type of music they like, so I expose them to a variety of music until we find what they enjoy playing.
In 2011, I graduated with my Bachelor's of Music in Performance Violin and Viola from the Cole Conservatory of Music at the California State University, Long Beach where I also studied conducting, music theory & history, and piano.
Some of my private violin and viola students have been accepted to All State Honor's Orchestra, All Southern Honor's Orchestra, and the Capo Valley Honor's Orchestra. One of my students is currently attending the Orange County High School of the Arts as a violin student. I helped the students prepare for the auditions and always willing to help students with their orchestra music. Many of them began at an intermediate level and were auditioning for these orchestras after 1-2 years of lessons with me.
I have been teaching the violin privately for over 13 years. I have taught the violins at Serrano Middle School and Woodbridge High School.
I job shadowed other private violin instructors when I was in high school. I also went to a 12 week teaching seminar called, "In Search of: A Guide to Violin Excellence" where teachers talked about how to teach students to practice and learn skills that will help them jump levels in technique.
I perform frequently with the Montage Symphony, Dana Point Symphony, and Symphony Irvine as Assistant Principal Violist.
I studied the violin privately for 19 years with violin teachers from the Juilliard School of Music and Ken Aiso, former teacher from the Royal Academy of Music in London. I also attended music camps like the Montecito Music Festival and Musishare's former Chamber Music Festival of 2004.
Performed as a solo violinist at the Orange County Fair in 2007 and 2008 with a Bluegrass band.
I was a concerto competition winner in 2004 and performed Haydn's Violin Concerto No. 2 with the South Orange County Chamber Orchestra as a soloist.
I teach the Suzuki method and follow the technique used by Dorothy DeLay and Ivan Galamian (former Juilliard School of Music violin teachers).
I studied the piano privately for 4 years then studied piano courses in college to take the piano proficiency exam that was required for my music degree.
I am an active performer, always inviting my students to watch my concerts. I sometimes perform at the Crystal Cathedral and perform at the holiday program at the Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church. I invite students to see the annual Mahler Project where I play with the Montage Symphony a Mahler Symphony every year. I also invite students to watch musicals I perform in, Dana Point and Symphony Irvine concerts.
Piano, Violin, Cello, Viola
My musical education began while sitting on my mother's lap as she taught piano lessons. I began studying cello with a member of the Kansas City Philharmonic at age 9, and at age ten, I followed in my mother's footsteps to play the flute. I played all three instruments, (piano, cello and flute) until high school when it was became clear to me that I wanted to be an orchestra teacher. With this dream in mind, I began playing the violin as well.
I graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's in Music Education in 1989 and again in 1999 with a Master's degree.
As a youngster, I was the youngest member of the Kansas City Youth Symphony and the Kansas City Cello Choir performing with these two groups for eight years. I was chosen from applicants nation wide, to perform in Carnegie Hall and travel Europe with "America's Youth in Concert" and I was a three time All-Stater.
While attending Drake University, I played in the Drake University Orchestra and the Des Moines Symphony, and I was the winner of the Young Artist Competition awarding me the honor as featured soloist with the Drake Symphony Orchestra.
In 1993 I began playing with the Encore String Trio. This trio plays on a regular basis for weddings and receptions.
I currently play cello in the Enocre String Trio, and viola in the Long Beach Community Orchestra.
My teaching experience includes nearly 30 years of private teaching. I've had the pleasure of teaching all areas of music; elementary general music, band, choir and orchestra. During my 20 years of teaching orchestra in the public schools, I implemented many innovative opportunities for my students such as children's concert which drew more than 700 people in attendance, strolling strings, cello choir and a viola choir, all of which proved to be very motivational for the students. My goal of teaching is to make music fun for all.
I believe music should be fun. I provide you with several playing opportunities throughout the year, ranging from solo to group playing. I provide large group playing opportunities at Christmas and at the recitals. Every group playing opportunity is accompanied with food and games for all. This studio is FUN!
