Hi! My name is Al! I've been playing drums for about 11 years now, I started playing at the age of 12 when my parents bought me my first drum set. Since then drumming has been my life, everything from playing in numerous bands, drum competitions, private teaching, and National US Tours. Leaving my home town of Brownsville, TX behind, I moved out to L.A Summer of 2008 to attend the Los Angeles Music Academy, where I received my Associates Degree in Music Performance. I currently teach private lessons and I gig around town with various artists. I have lots of musical knowledge that Iv'e obtained by studying with LA's Top Drummers. The piano has always been my greatest passion; I have never been able to imagine life without it. I was very fortunate to have had the benefit of a great education in music starting at an early age. I received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California, where I was a student of Daniel Pollack for 12 years. I started playing music around the Kansas City area twenty five years ago. I graduated from The University of Southern California with a degree in studio/jazz guitar (cum laude). While at USC, I received a merit scholarship and an award for professional leadership and service within her department. I also graduated with honors from Musicians Institute (GIT), of Hollywood, CA.

I have toured the U.S. and Canada playing venues such as The Portland Rose Festival, The Playboy Jazz Festival, The Santa Monica Twilight Concert Series, Irvine Lake Blues Festival,The Burnaby British Columbia Blues Festival and the Long Beach Blues Festival. The headliners at these events included Robben Ford, The Neville Brothers, and Johnny Winter.

I began playing piano at the age of 5 and never stopped taking lessons until halfway through college. I entered into various competitions and festivals throughout myr young life and did pretty well. I began taking violin lessons at age 9 and continue to play violin as well as sing in a rock band called, The Denouement. My mom was an excellent music teacher and very successful choir director for almost 40 years so I have absorbed all kinds of musical wisdom from her. I have been playing music consistently for over 20 years and teaching music for over 2 years. I am extremely patient, encouraging and kind, but am also very particular when it comes to my students playing the best that they can play.

I am a graduate from CSU Northridge in vocal performance. I have studied under Judy Scott and Marvelee Cariaga. Singing for the past eight years, I have performed in many operas, musicals, opera scenes, chamber music ensembles, and recitals. As seasoned choral singer who has been performing in choirs for ten years, I was, most recently, a member of the 2003 Choir of the World winning ensemble Northridge Singers from 2008-2010. I teach voice in a number of different styles including: classical, musical theater, pop, and folk. I am also an experienced sight-reader, and can instruct singers in sight-singing and musicianship.

When I was 2 years old I saw my uncle play the drums in a band at a family gathering. For some reason which I can't explain, I ignored all of the other instruments on stage and became fixated on the drum set! When the show was over I went over to my uncle's side to take a closer look. Then I was hoisted up into his lap where I was allowed, for the first time, to play the drums myself. Ever since that day all I could think of was having a kit of my own.
Finally, at the age of 7 I got what I had wanted for five long years. It was a toy-sized, royal blue DRUMSET! At first I played whatever rhythms I could come up with or whatever beats my father could show me. But eventually my parents forced me into taking some lessons. "You're not just going to bang on them all day," my father told me, "you're going to learn to really play." I must admit that in the beginning I hated taking lessons because of how regimented and challenging it was. However, as time went on I began to...

My journey with music began in 2004. I started playing guitar and piano while attending College of the Desert. The guitar led me to take several music classes, including guitar ensemble and piano. I soon transferred to Cal Poly Pomona to pursue a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 2005. While attending Cal Poly, I declared a Double Major in Music Performance (Guitar Emphasis) since I enjoyed it so much. I began studying guitar under Dr.Yates (UCLA) and Dr. Gravelle (UCLA). I have over twenty years of performance experience as a drummer. I have an AA degree in Music from Pasadena City College. I have a BA in Music from California State University, Northridge. I have taught individual and group instruction, focusing on hand technique and sight-reading. I attended Grove School of Music in 1990, where I studied hand and sticking technique and Latin drum-set application.
