Laura R. Houston, TX

About Laura

I am a mezzo soprano with a bachelor and masters of music degree in vocal performance from the University of Houston. I am pursuing a career in opera while teaching private voice and piano lessons,
During my voice lessons I like to focus on developing the student's voice through a classical approach. By forming a strong foundation in healthy singing the student will be able to sing in various genres without strain to his/her voice.
In my piano lessons I use the series of method books, Piano Adventures, developed by Nancy and Randall Faber. Through these instructions the student will learn to read music as well as establish a proficiency for playing the piano.

Great teacher

As a beginner, I appreciate Laura’s patience and thoroughness in teaching and explaining techniques. I really enjoy my lessons with her.
Charles D. Houston, TX

I teach a vocal technique which is called singing on the speaking level, or "Singing with the ease of Speech". It provides the student with a systematic approach to link together all the registers of the voice-chest and head. The student and I work together to build a bridge between the low voice and high voice, (through the break) combining those parts in the middle creating "the mix" ( a blend of chest and head voice), that most singers struggle to master and the vast majority of teachers don't know how to teach or identify. This allows the singer to access all of his or her range without strain. A student would begin to experience positive results within a few weeks of study, both in the studio and with practice between lessons.

One of the best things about this technique is that it allows you to sing any style of music. Whether you sing Pop/R&B, Rock, country, musical theater, gospel, or opera, you can experience vocal freedom and confidence that every singer wants to have. As ...

He captures the essence and spirit of those classic singers that have gone before him and established a tradition of great singing€.Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, and Harry Belafonte, as well as the more contemporary sounds of Peabo Bryson, Wintley Phipps, Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne.

He is in his element singing as a soloist for spiritual ceremonies, concerts, conferences, services and related ...

I couldn't have asked for a better voice teacher. I am soooo happy I found him. His singing philosophy works for me. After just three lessons, I have received some valuable tools that have already improved the quality of my singing voice. Not only is he a great teacher but he is professional and very hospitable. He is great to work with. Its not just a job for him, he enjoys what he does. He cares about the development of his students. I'm excited to see how much I will grow in a year from now.

Octavio M. Houston, TX

Basic technique to use the vocal instrument correctly.

About Octavio

I have been teaching voice for 5 years and my beginner students are already singing their own gigs. I have had only one advanced student in singing and in 2010 he got the zarzuela prize in the most prestigious opera competition in the world "Placido Domingo´s Operalia). I can teach in Spanish, English and Italian. and for voice I specialize in opera and mariachi music. In guitar as well as in Piano I only teach beginners.

For voice I only take students from 15 years old and on. This is only because the children's voice is very delicate and I think it requires a teacher who specializes in children for it is a big responsibility. Once the puberty voice change is gone: this is my field of expertise. with great discipline and a huge desire ...

Mr. Octavio knows how to motivate a child. My son gets easily distracted with telling stories, etc and Mr. Octavio is able to get him to focus so well. He has an excellent combination of firmness with motivation. Plus he really knows how to get my 8 year old to understand lessons. Highly recommend!

When an excise in challenging, Ms. Paula helps me through that particular lesson and she is very patient with me.

She has a great spirit and smiles all the time.

She is always present and available.

Robert is a very competent, patient, and kind music teacher. He is always trying to be encouraging and practical. He pointed out my strong area and weakness in a honest and comfortable way. I improved so much during the pass six month of singing lesson and am happy to learn some lovely songs. Now I start guitar lesson with him. Both singing and guitar lessons are challenging to Robert and me as I am not a young learner and everything had to start from the beginning. It has been a pleasure learning music from him. He loves animals and lives with his wife in a lovely apartment; they have a dog, a cat, and a turtle.

successful

My teacher has been challenging me with work specifically designed to help me in the
areas where I am weak. I have walked away from every lesson with at least one or two new things to immediately help me improve. I couldn't ask for more than that. I plan to take four more lessons before evaluating my progress again. To say I am
pleased with the quality of teaching I have been receiving would be an understatement.

Bobby is an excellent teacher.

My daughter is eight years old, and she has had an excellent experience with Bobby. He has a gift for being able to push her and correct her while encouraging her at the same time. She loves her weekly lessons.
Troy W. Houston, TX

I have been teaching this subject for over 13 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it may be selected from the western classical, musical theatre, and popular rep based on the student's goals and learning needs with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

We first started lessons with Troy almost three years ago, and we continue to be impressed with the progress made over just a few years of practicing! Our oldest son, who is now eight, has worked very hard to prepare his weekly lessons. He works on short pieces, sight-reading, and now ear training.
Troy’s impressive training has given him a very well-rounded appreciation of music that is rare in a teacher –most focus on one thing, with the result leaning heavily towards technique or theory. He is able to incorporate multiple aspects of a piece so that they are all equally weighted, and neither the minor points nor the big picture are neglected.
Perhaps more impressive than Troy’s educational background is his ability to make learning piano fun! He is an outstanding teacher!

I have been taking piano lessons with Troy for about a year and a half. He is very knowledgeable and has been an excellent instructor. I took piano lessons many years ago so I was not a complete beginner, but Troy has helped me learn more of the music theory, and a number of other things that were either missed or forgotten in my early training. It has been great getting back into piano and I think Troy has been very flexible in letting me explain what I want to get out of the lessons. I have enjoyed the time with him and would recommend his teaching to others!

I have lessons with Troy for almost 2 years now. He is a great teacher, sound in music knowledge and excellent in teaching skills. He recognizes my strength, encouraging me to push its further, and at the same time, fills up holes on my music backgrounds and piano techniques via selective music pieces. I especially like the depth and the passion he brings into each music piece.
I have lessons with several teachers before and I would say Troy is one of the best teacher I have ever had. With him, I have gained much more knowledge on music, and made great progress on music reading, analysis, and piano practise techniques. I always like music, and he makes me like it even more :).
