Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice
Hello! I'm Justin, a classically trained Baritone with an emphasis in opera and art song. I have earned my Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point, and my Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota. In Stevens Point I sang the roles of Papageno in The Magic Flute, Marcello in La Boheme, Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, and Marco in Gianni Schicchi. As part of the University of Minnesota Opera Theater I have covered Ford in Falstaff, and performed Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. My recital appearances most recently include Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis Op. 24, Modest Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death, and multiple performances of Franz Schubert’s Die Winterreise in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. I have been a Studio Artist for the critically acclaimed Mill City Summer Opera for two consecutive seasons. My responsibilities as an SA include covering roles, singing in the chorus, participation in an opera scenes program, and leading a series of Opera Enrichment classes at the Lundstrum Center for Performing Arts. I am a member of the Minnesota Opera Chorus, this being my first season with the company. I am the Bass Section Leader at Central Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, MN.
Alongside my passion for singing, I am an avid composer. I have completed a wide variety of pieces, from full orchestral works to string quartets, from 12-part choral pieces to art songs. Notable compositions include: Joys and Woes, a song cycle for Soprano; Charlotte, a song cycle for Soprano; Canticle No.1 for SATB chorus, which was marked for consideration at the UW-Stevens Point Choral Composition Competition; and the in-progress work for ensemble and voice titled “Sketches”.
I have been teaching voice for 5 years now, and have taught students ages 7-70, so I know first hand that it is never too early or too late to start singing! I have prepared students for auditions, recitals, and for just plain fun. I teach with confidence so you can sing with confidence, and I have found that it works wonders.
*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching private voice for five years, and have been successful in teaching a variety of students and musical styles. Though my singing background is predominantly classical, I use that training to nurture healthy, strong, and organic voices. I do this by teaching both the fundamentals of singing technique (breathing, support, resonance, anatomy), and the art of musicianship, which is essential to every style of singing. I approach my personal understanding of the voice from the angle of knowing it as an instrument, as opposed to a source of sound that can easily be taken for granted. This allows for an even mix of understanding the voice organically, and understanding how the different parts of the instrument can be manipulated. No two voices are the same, and likewise, no two students are the same. Because of this, I do not teach a pre-structured technique, but rather take the time with each student to understand their instrument and craft a technique that will work most healthily and efficiently for them.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, access to a large quantity of classical and pop sheet music, spacious studio space, performance space, the occasional puppy, tea, music stands, and a cool fish.
*** Specialties ***
I am a trained classical baritone, and have experience in the musical theater genre as well. I teach all genres according to the Italian school of singing, which focuses on breathing and the minimization of stress while singing. As I say: classical training is only the approach, the style is up to the singer. I have been successful in teaching all types of genres through this approach. I am also an avid composer and songwriter, and regularly teach theory in my lessons.

My name is Arlys, and my vocal exploration began at age three singing solos at church. As a teenager, I performed with the concert choir and madrigal singers under the tutelage of Hal W., a teacher who affected me so deeply with his love of classical choral music that it changed my life, although I wouldn't realize it until much later. As a young artist, I wrote, sang and performed with numerous original rock, pop, funk & blues bands; simultaneously acting, singing, dancing or choreographing stage musicals.
Early on in my career I was lucky enough to get a private session with Jeannette LoVetri who first introduced me to Alexander Technique exercises that I use to this day, provided important information about the biology of the vocal system - beginning to change the way I thought about using my voice. Then, through overwork & improper vocal techniques I destroyed my voice. With the help of professional classical vocal instructor Bonnie F., I began the long process of rebuilding my voice from the ground up. My blessed teacher encouraged me endlessly, showing interest in how my dance background influenced my training, my posture and understanding of the exercises presented.
Bonnie noted my passion and desire to comprehend and translate classical singing practices and more importantly how they applied to all styles of music. She encouraged me, in turn, to begin coaching others. To that end I wound up studying with her for 6 years.
In 2000, I moved to Los Angeles and continued diversifying my voice and my training as a voice coach working briefly with Kathryn Grimm and Darlene Koldenhoven, and eventually studying Italian bel canto techniques with Linda Mitchell, rediscovering my classical voice by singing opera arias for the first time, and with a new found coloratura soprano range. The voice is such an amazing instrument, and because of its personal nature it can also be the most challenging.
My teaching style is infused with the knowledge that students of voice must be treated with great care, love and encouragement. Between performing and my own artistic studies, I have been teaching privately for over 15 years, mostly via referrals from other students, and substituting for my voice teacher at Culver City and Santa Monica Music Schools. After 12 years in Los Angeles, I have relocated back to my hometown of Minneapolis to guide other vocal explorers to unleash their authentic voice.

* Have you always wanted to sing?
* Would you like to speak with more ease without losing your voice?
* Would you like to consistently breathe more deeply and feel the expanse of your breath?
Our voice is the most personal expression we can share, and our breath is our life force. I feel very passionate about helping others create their own 'toolkit' of exercises that encourage proper posture and ease of deeper breath support; with vocal exercises that guide the vocal explorer to finding their most perfect resonance and pitch control. The end result is the ability to sing and speak easily, freely, and with confidence!
I am passionate about helping you find your unique voice. I believe the voice is such an amazing instrument and can be the most challenging to work with, psychologically, since it is so very personal and therefore must be treated with great care, love and encouragement.
I incorporate my experience with dance, Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi and other forms of physical exercise with bel canto vocal training to help me create a personalized set of tools for each student.
Since we only get the one instrument, my goal is to help you understand how your instrument works, and how best to care for it so that you can sing for years to come!
It's Your Journey!

1) iPad have excellent connectivity
2) or, less than three years old

As a professional teaching artist and vocal coach, I have been helping students of all ages and abilities "find their voice" for over 20 years. My goal is simple: to give you singing lessons that will change your life forever. You can uncover your voice, build unshakable confidence and have fun while learning techniques professional singers take onto the stage and into the studio. And, you can have a great time doing it!
Give one lesson a try and if you're not hooked, I will refund 100% of the lesson cost (in cash) at the end of your first lesson.
About my vocal lessons/coaching:
Most students come into lessons with the same question: "Am I any good? Is there hope for me?" Well, here's the thing... The vast majority of professional vocalists never went to school for singing! Most professional vocalists had family and friends that told them they were talented and that they should pursue singing. Most professional vocalists started out copying the sound of other recording artists, struggling for years to find their own unique voice. But, most importantly, most professional vocalists started out having no idea what they were doing!
The KEY difference between professional vocalists and average singers is (9 times out of 10) the presence influential teacher/mentor!
The right teacher/mentor pushes you to grow continuously; beyond what you think is possible. The right teacher/mentor has wisdom and connections to share from inside the music industry. The right teacher/mentor genuinely cares about you as a person.
I teach so that I can be that life-changing mentor for my students, giving them that "missing link" for success.
I grew up in NYC and "cut my teeth" across a variety of genres: rock, jazz, R&B, gospel and choral/classical. You name it; I've sung it. Also, in addition to being a vocal coach, I travel the nation as a musician/performing artist, professional speaker, life coach, and author. I am also legally blind, which offers me a unique perspective on the art of singing. Consider taking a moment to watch the video clip below- it does a good job explaining what it is like to be me.
Unlike most teachers that take on any/all students, I limit my roster to 12-15 students at any given time. During our first few lessons, I commit to offering you honest and professional feedback about your strengths and weaknesses. I want to help YOU find YOUR own voice. I want to take a look at YOUR goals, YOUR dreams, and figure out what makes you tick.
During lessons, I draw a dual B.A. degree in vocal performance & music business as well as my industry experience. I offer insights on what works and what doesn't as a vocalist, whether you are looking to pursue singing vocationally or just as a hobby.
I can help you:
- Stop feeling nervous
- Develop impeccable technique
- Learn the “ins and outs” of being in the music business
- Assemble a press kit, record a demo and start to get gigs
- Much, much more!
I would love the opportunity to meet you and hear where you want your singing to take you. Please, get in touch!
I have everything we need for lessons in my studio: instruments, amps, laptop, mics, etc... I will provide you with all audio files and any written materials for our lessons.
Acting, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Theater Acting
Are you looking to sing or play keyboard, work on material for your band, build your repertoire, sing or play in the church choir/band, audition for a production, become a better lead singer in your rock or pop band, overcome stage-fright or wanting to get to the next level? You have come to the right place!
My lessons provide students with an opportunity to deeply explore the voice, build confidence, and to develop healthy and effective singing practices, which can be applied to any style of musical singing and playing.
A well-rounded music education is very important and I have fun and educational resources for learning vocal technique, ear training, harmony, pitch matching and music theory.
I am very fortunate to have performed and studied Classical and Opera, musical theater productions, have sang in Rock, Pop, Country, R&B bands and can bring that real-world experience into the lesson. The student will receive real hands-on knowledge about singing in a variety of environments and how to manage his/her vocal goals!
In addition to being vocally healthy, I encourage self-expression and enhance self-esteem in my students: singers of all ages, skill levels and styles. Plus, it has to be fun, otherwise why do it? Singing is a process and less about the end goal and we train the body, mind and use imagination and it's a very exciting process!
***My students regularly receive scholarships and placement in music schools and programs around the U.S., have won competitions, do well in auditions, are performing in successful bands and/or recording artists.
I am energetic and enthusiastic; actively promote values and traditional teaching practices coupled with the introduction of technology into the lesson. My experience as an educator is to share passion and talent for music with the next generation of musicians and outstanding communication skills. I really care about my students and provide the tools to help them reach their goals!

My laid-back and fun approach allows for versatility and is tailored to meet the needs of the individual student. When studying the art of singing you are gaining skills, which build confidence.
When you understand what you‚¬Ä¬ôre doing and why, you bring more confidence to your performance. Progress is made with regular practice outside of lessons. Voice students record each private lesson on tape and take notes in their own notebooks.
I have "warm-up" tracks which you can use in your car or at home and you will notice significant improvement once you start your routine.
Practicing is very important and I have great methods to teach students how to maximize their time and get the best results! I am privileged to have an opportunity to teach and very passionate about coaching a student to meet his or her musical goals!
Also, I have a Beagle named "Bacon" and he will always be very excited to see you, however he does calm down when you're in the studio. In addition, I have two cats, so please let me know if you have allergies or any special recommendations.
Thanks so much!
