- 8 Years Teaching Experience
- Professional Musician
- Flexible teaching style (written notation, ear training, play-a-long songs)
- Patient & fin environment

About John

I have spent over 10 years gigging, recording, and teaching drums in the Twin Cities. I am a full-time musician, splitting time between original indie-pop band, Step Rockets, and Minneapolis-based cover band, Soul Tree. I teach from my music studio in St. Paul as well as traveling to students' homes.

I started drumming at the age of 10, honing my chops under the tutelage of drummer/vibraphonist Steve Roehm, member of the acclaimed Twin Cities jazz trio, The New Standards. I continued my musical education at St. Olaf College, where I played drums in the college's nationally accredited Jazz One ensemble while studying percussion with highly regarded Twin Cities musicians Phil Hey and Dave Hagedorn. Since graduating, I've found a niche in the world of teaching. I spent ...

I worked with John for around 9 months so far, starting as a complete beginner. He has moved me through multiple genres of music and despite my limited schedule has me progressing much further along in lessons then I ever thought possible! He is great to work with, very accommodating to the students interest and very professional! He has helped me with technique and music theory as well, which has been really helpful. I would recommend him to anyone, young or old, interested in learning the drums!

I am very happy to have selected Colin as my drum teacher. He is patient and explains concepts clearly. I find that he provides helpful feedback identifying both what I am doing correctly and where I need to adjust. He adjusts the lessons to my progress, so I feel that I am receiving individualized instruction. I am a long time educator and know good instruction when I see it, and I see it in him!

Colin has been a great inspiration in my son's playing. It has brought a level of creativity and improvisation that he just wasn't learning from other teachers. He truly cares about his students and has a positive energy that helps motivate my son to be a better player. Colin has the chops and spectacular sense of timing and song memory. I would recommend Colin to students of all age and ability levels.

Excellent!

I started learning drums from Colin starting June 2013. I am a beginner and Colin was my first drum teacher.

I really liked the way Colin provided step by step guidance. He has great patience when it comes to work with beginner like me. I am really glad I learnt under his guidance. He was very encouraging which is really helpful especially at the beginning.

Colin teaches how to do and play things right. I learnt really cool beats from him in my first set of lessons. Overall it was fun experience.

I would definitely recommend Colin.

And thanks a ton to Colin for being such an excellent instructor...

An excited learning experience

I have had lessons for a month with Billy, and will continue to study with him in future. He is an excellent teacher. Nothing to neat pick, everything is just amazing. He taught every single details of what I should know about drumming, recommended a really helpful textbook to me, and even helped to make my practice a great fun other than a dull work for a beginner. I really appreciate those. If someone is expecting to have an effective and pleasing learning experience, just go ahead try to work with Billy. It is absolutely worth the time and effort. Hope that'd be helpful.
Aaron T. Saint Paul, MN

I have been playing the drum set since 2002 and specialize in beginner lessons.

About Aaron

First off, I would like to say that I am extremely passionate about music, and even more so passionate about helping others. To combine the two through providing musical instruction is something I have always enjoyed doing.

I have been playing guitar and drums for over a decade and teaching for about half of that time. I have a Bachelors of Music in Contemporary Urban and Pop music with guitar as my primary instrument and drums as my secondary. I also spent much of my time in school studying songwriting and music production. I have played and toured with many different bands with music from a variety of styles and genres, and have spent vast amounts of time in the studio recording and producing myself and various other artists.

In terms of teaching lessons, I realize that all ...

Aaron has been an excellent teacher for my 9 year old son.
Rio K. Saint Paul, MN

I've been playing for 14 years taking lessons from dozens of teachers across the US. I just graduated Mcnally Smith College of Music with a bachelors in Percussion Performance. Last year I started teaching drums after I took a pedagogy class in it and I'm excited to teach what I know to students.

For Beginners I start off with the basics of Rock and Jazz grooves and rudiments. If there's a specific style or band you're into, I focus the lessons around better understanding or playing them.

About Rio

I've been drumming for 14 years now. I took lessons from teachers based in St. Louis, New York and Saint Paul. I really love the work of Dave King a Twin Cities based drummer. I'm always looking to collaborate with other musicians. A fan of odd meters and grooves, anything involving 4-way coordination is right up my alley.
