Subjects Taught

Drum, Guitar, Music Recording, Music Theory, Percussion, Piano, Songwriting, Ukulele

About Me

I began music in Winona, MN at age 9 with a pair of drumsticks and went on to become a world champion in 2003 with the Blue Stars drum and bugle corps. I do all things percussion and have been playing for 20 years but these days I do a lot more than just drums.

My time spent studying Music Education at the University of North Texas expanded my musical horizons adding piano and guitar among other tools of the trade. The majority of my students these days are piano students young and old but I love teaching a variety of lessons including guitar and ukelele.

I currently teach piano, drums, and guitar at a local music store in the Twin Cities. I also teach the Hastings drumline in the summer and fall and the Red Wing indoor drumline in the winter time.

On a completely different note, I'm a veteran member of the Twin Cities Terrors all-star men's roller derby team. I travel across the country as Egon Strangler challenging teams on roller skates from Dallas to New York. You can find more info about when I'm skating next at tcterrors.com or just ask me about it. I love to talk about derby.

*** Lesson Details ***
We'll take a focused and fun look at the kind of music you want to play and make that an achievable reality. Whether we'll be playing Ben Folds, Bach, or Bruno we'll work together to find a direct path to making the music that you like.

My goal is to make your experience interesting and understandable. If I send you home with music you can understand that you enjoy playing then I know you'll practice and our time together will be successful. Everyone has that creative spark and I'm just here to help you shine some light on it.

*** Travel Equipment ***
An instrument they can practice on.

*** Specialties ***
I play and teach a method that customizes the experience for each student so they get the most out of their time on their instrument of choice. We can play any song in any genre and most importantly, have fun with it.

Subjects Taught

Ableton, Drum, Music Performance, Music Recording, Percussion

About Me

Over the past decade, John has enjoyed great success gigging, recording, and teaching drums. John has logged over eight years of performance experience in the Twin Cities and Upper Midwest, playing with bands spanning a diverse range of musical genres, from rock/pop to jazz and latin. He currently plays every weekend, splitting time between original indie band, Step Rockets, and Minneapolis-based cover band, Soul Tree. John teaches drum students in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs. Lessons are held from his basement studio or from students' homes.

John started drumming at the age of 10, honing his chops under the tutelage of drummer/vibraphonist Steve Roehm, member of the acclaimed Twin Cities jazz trio, The New Standards. John continued his musical education at St. Olaf College, where he played drums in the school’s nationally accredited Jazz One ensemble and studied percussion with highly regarded Twin Cities musicians Phil Hey and Dave Hagedorn. Since graduating, John has found a niche in the world of teaching. He has taught students in St. Paul Public Schools while developing a strong base of drum students in and around the Twin Cities. John has a thorough understanding of drumming technique coupled with an in-depth knowledge of different styles and genres.

John shares his passion for drums and his love of music with people of all ages and backgrounds. He provides a fun and stimulating learning environment in which his students can foster their drum skills and grow their love of music.

Based on his teaching experience with a wide range of ages and experience levels, John tailors his curriculum according to his students’ input and the exercises that are most effective. Colin M. Saint Paul, MN

Subjects Taught

Drum, Music Performance, Music Recording, Percussion

About Me

I am a 28 year old drummer with 19 years of experience spanning all genre's and styles of music. Countless hours of stage performance with bands. A love, drive and passion for music and drumming you won't find in any other instructor! Multiple studio recordings both behind the mixing board and behind the drum set. 8 years of teaching experience, realizing the importance of setting a unique curriculum for each student tailored to fit each individual's goals and interests. I have been involved in bands ever since middle school, starting with rock, and moving on to perform in country bands, hip-hop performances, indie rock bands, and progressive rock bands. A strong knowledge of jazz techniques and music theory as well as the ability to read drum sheet music make me a perfect instructor for any student.
I have had many beginner and intermediate level student's and have become proficient in determining what skills each individual student needs to work on as well as helping students progress in their interests, keeping the lessons fun and the student motivated. I can easily transcribe any song as well! So any song you might want to learn, even if there is no sheet music, is totally doable. I love working in odd time signatures and I prefer fancy hi-hat work over heavy double-bass drum use. Progressive / Indie rock is my favorite genre of music to play, but I have tons of fun playing hip-hop, punk, metal, I dabble in jazz, Latin rhythms, and pretty much anything else. I'm always excited to play drums, and I pass this excitement on in my teachings.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons and curriculum's are built around a students experience level, age, and goals. Students will learn the fundamentals of drumming, as well as the ability to add flair and pizazz to their playing. Within the first 3 months, a beginning level student will have the ability to play basic beats found in many styles of music, as well as feeling comfortable playing to a metronome and keeping time. Lessons will include routines to be practiced by the student on their own time, as well as fun, exciting techniques to keep students interested and motivated to continue playing.
Each Lesson will hold its own highlights depending on the student. I believe getting to know the student and their goals for their drumming is one of the most important aspects of teaching lessons. Understanding whether the student is looking to drum as a hobby and for fun will change the lesson style dramatically compared to a student looking to make a living off drumming. The types of routines, styles and techniques taught should fit into helping the student reach their desired destination.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the basement, full band rehearsal set up with 2 drum kits, one for the student, one for the teacher.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to have a drum set and drum sticks. I can provide a drum set for lessons but it is important for the student to have a drum set or practice pad to practice.

*** Specialties ***
I have touched on almost every genre of music. I am currently studying Latin jazz, I specialize in progressive rock.

Sarah W. Minneapolis, MN

Subjects Taught

Drum, Music Theory, Piano, Singing, Songwriting

About Me

Hey there, my name is Sarah W. and I am a touring musician and songwriter. I graduated from the Berklee College of Music with a Songwriting Degree in May of 2013 and have since been traveling between London and Los Angeles to record, write, and gig. I am home in Minnesota where I grew up until Sept 1 and am available for lessons in Piano, Voice, Drums, and Songwriting.

I have had a lot of experience teaching music and love working with kids. In high school I taught at Keyboard Kids in Wayzata, where I was an assistant piano teacher for two years. I have spent two summers working at Portland's Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls teaching piano and songwriting, and spent one summer teaching at the New York Location. I also spent two years teaching private piano lessons to an 8 and 11 year old on and off.

I was also selected as an alumni mentor for Berklee's Songwriting Workshop, which took place last week from June 26-29 and helped 15-20 year olds learn how to craft and improve their songwriting skills.

I try to take a very fun and imaginative approach to teaching and want to make sure each student enjoys playing their instrument. I make sure to see what the goal and level is for each student and adjust my teaching around that.

My schedule over the next two months is very flexible, and I can do group lessons with more than one student if you have two kids or if your child has a friend that wants to take lessons too.

It would be great to have lessons at my home in Plymouth, as I have a piano and drums set up, but I am flexible and able to come to your home if that is easier.

Hope to hear from you soon!
