About Me

Josh returned to the Twin Cities in 2013, after living and
studying in the New York area for six years. He is very excited about the new
opportunities before him, and he is thrilled to be back in his home state. Josh
has had a good deal of success as a performing musician, but teaching has been and
remains one of his most important focuses. “I tailor my curriculum to fit each
individual student’s personal needs as no two students learn in exactly the
same way. I like to incorporate a strong technical foundation, a focus on sensitive
listening and finding the student’s best means for personal expression.”

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will be personalized, productive, and fun!Whether you are just starting out or you've been playing for years, I will help you identify your goals and lay out a plan for achieving them in a fun and satisfying way.A Technical FoundationI try to incorporate some technical study into every lesson because I believe that the more control you have over your instrument, the more fun it is to play. I also like to incorporate music theory studies into my lessons because it will deepen your understanding of the music and it will help you learn to improvise and write your own music!Sensitive ListeningPlaying music can be one of the most physically and mentally engaging activities a person can do. With that in mind, I like to encourage total awareness when playing. Not only will this help to improve your playing, but it will make for an even deeper and more rewarding experience.Finding the Best Means for Personal ExpressionEach student has their own tastes and talents. In addition to learning your favorite music, I will introduce you to new styles of music that will help broaden your artistic palette.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own instruments for demonstration and I will provide copies of my own worksheets and exercises. I expect students to provide their own instruments and purchase their own music books.

*** Specialties ***
I like to begin with a strong technical foundation with whatever instrument I am teaching. I generally use my own worksheets for this part of my curriculum. After that I like to explore pieces that the student is interested in, while also adding some suggestions of my own.
