Priscilla G. Milwaukee, WI

Subjects Taught

Arithmetic, Basic Math, Broadway Singing, Classical Voice, Elementary Math, English, Phonics, Singing

About Me

I am a life-long singer and a life-long learner, and I want to help you discover the joy of having music in your life! I was 7 years old when I started singing in our church choir, learning to read music as I practiced with the grown-ups every week. In high school, I sang in the choir and in musicals. In college, I majored in Music/Voice Performance and prepared for my senior recital. After earning my BA and graduating Phi Beta Kappa, I worked with youth camps and community theater and church choirs. I began substitute teaching for grades K-8 when my youngest child started school and was thrilled to step in for band lessons and general music classes along with general class curriculum. My 4 kids were in bands and choirs and musicals, and I loved coaching their auditions and solo spots at home. I taught Voice and Musical Theater through CYT for 7 years. I participated in 5 community theater productions and sang with Chicago Master Singers in that time as well. Collaborating with others as they explore their range as singers, musicians, performers, and human beings is one of the most exciting activities you can be involved in...and you can continue to do that for as long as you can breathe! I look forward to working with you and helping you discover your own voice!

*** Lesson Details ***
Singing involves your whole being: physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Lessons will include each of these aspects in a personal and fun dialogue. You will learn about the physiology of producing sound and how your body works. You will learn how to convey emotion with your voice, how to address anxiety and build confidence in yourself as a performer, how to follow the road map of a musical score and how to develop sight-singing skills. You will experience what it feels like to sing with your whole being and hopefully, share that experience with others in a unique performance. You will provide a CD player and a keyboard in your home. You will choose the pieces you want to work on and provide sheet music and accompaniment. I will help you make the most of what you've got and celebrate the joy of your gifts with you!
If your lesson is in Math or English, my goal is to communicate concepts in creative ways across different learning styles. As a published writer and previously certified substitute teacher, I love helping students unlock the ideas behind symbols, whether they're words or numbers or musical notes!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student provides: CD player, electricity. I will bring a keyboard and provide you with a CD of vocal warm-up exercises. I have samples of music to get started with, but eventually, each student will build his/her own library of sheet music and accompaniment tracks as we select songs to rehearse. Those materials can be purchased in many forms online or from a music store.

*** Specialties ***
audition coaching

Peggy J. Milwaukee, WI

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Dance, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing

About Me

J. is a highly qualified and experienced musician and teacher in the greater
Milwaukee area. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a
bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s in both piano and choral
conducting. Professionally, Peggy has worked in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas
as a pianist and ballet dancer for many dance companies including The Milwaukee
Ballet and Chicago City Ballet Companies. Throughout her career she has
continually served as a church musician (pianist, organist, and choir director)
for a wide variety of denominations. Beginning in 2000, she taught music
full-time in the Catholic school system for more than 10 years. Some of her
other accomplishments include directing musical theater and composing and
performing live accompaniments for silent movies.

has enjoyed a growing roster of private students (primarily piano and voice)
since college.

sharing the benefits of what all of her experience can teach, she puts the
wonderful language of music within her students’ reach. Each spring and winter
they have an opportunity to exhibit their successes to friends and family as
they prepare and perform in bi-annual recitals.

*** Lesson Details ***
As Peggy begins lessons with a new student, they work together to establish what musical background, if any, the student has and determine clear goals in terms of the student’s focus of study. While some aspects such as style and specific repertoire may be more flexible, all will systematically develop a true understanding of the basics of music theory. Technique and habits of practice are made clear and assignments, tailored to each student, and comments to the student and/or parents are notated weekly. Building a positive, trusting, and respectful relationship with student is also very necessary. A teacher’s ultimate job is to teach the student to be his own problem solver. The teacher provides the tools. The student uses them in daily practice. Even as a beginner, a student will learn the process of preparing and presenting himself with confidence in the bi-annual recitals. How exciting to not only learn the love of music, but grow in self-esteem and discipline.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I DO have a portable Privia keyboard to carry in my car, but I believe the student must have some sort of keyboard at home with which to practice on during the week. Even a voice student would need at least a small keyboard, but, with my Privia for lessons, that would work fine!

*** Specialties ***
Strong emphasis on theory and proper technique. Usually a mixed rep. that includes classical with an understanding of the historical stylistic eras (as they effect interpretation) and (esp. with younger students) some contemporary genre that is recognizable to them to see the comparisons and differences.

Susan L B. Milwaukee, WI

Subjects Taught

Acting, Broadway Singing, English, History, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Phonics, Reading, Shakespearean Acting, Singing, Speaking Voice, Theater Acting

About Me

I have a broad classical education with a great deal of music experience. I received my professional education in the University of Oregon's School of Music, where I specialized in Opera Performance and Languages, and at the Music Conservatory in Perugia, Italy. I also studied History and Philosophy, History of Performance Techniques, Acting, Italian and French diction and phonics, and Music Performance Theory. While in Oregon, I performed with Eugene Opera! Company and the Oregon Symphony. I am a Certified Singing Vocal Specialist, familiar with Speech Level Singing, and the Estille philosophy. I also have experience as a Music Librarian, specializing in music manuscripts, recordings, indexes and scores.

Academic tutoring and Private Voice Lessons are available, weekly or bi-weekly, using solid classical singing technique. Training in Opera arias, and Broadway songs, Ballads or Jazz. For children I can teach reading, writing, music appreciation, reading sheet music, written music theory, ear training, different styles of music and rhythm, or the cadences and intonations and rhythms of Romance languages. Vocal Training is also available for Pageant Preparation, College Preparation, Actors, Audition Preparation, Corporate/Public Speaking, and ESL practice. All ages are welcome to inquire.

I believe in a holistic physical approach to singing. Your body is your instrument, and whole body exercise is essential to building stamina, and I can direct that development. With increasing strength and deep breathing, a singer can relax, and the sound will carry. There will be no need to strain when "belting" with proper preparation and technique, and you will be heard in the back row! It is also ideal to understand the words and their meanings in each phrase of the music or selection. I can help you interpret songs or audition pieces in a variety of languages. You will learn the natural pacing of each song and explore the meaning and emotional effect you can express! Each voice is unique. Let's work together to find music which is uniquely suited to your voice!
