Gabriel H. Milwaukee, WI

I have studied music theory to the highest collegiate level

About Gabriel

I graduated with a BA in jazz studies from Columbia in 2007 and have been teaching since 2005. I have played in many different projects, covering many styles including Rock, Jazz, Latin, Hip hop, classical, orchestral, and country. So, I have a strong understanding on the specifics of each of these styles, and a big part of my lesson plan is to teach my students to be as versatile as possible. Hence they have many options as far as playing music. I also play a wide variety of instruments including Piano, Latin Percussion, Mallets, Drum set, Guitar, and bass, so if at any point a student has an interest in trying something different t they have many options.

Great teacher for learning basic to advanced skills!

Gabe is a great teacher to get students started learning their basic skills on piano, drums, guitar or bass. He is really patient and takes the time to make sure the student really learns each specific skill. Gabe picks out exercises that make learning new skills fun and even arranges the students favorite pop tunes to help fit in with the skills being taught. Gabe really makes lessons fun and helps students learn the songs that keep them excited about playing!!

Experienced theory teacher of 20 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of skills. I specialize in Baroque music and ornamentation, and I typically work with the books you have from your HS or college courses. I am especially helpful with figured bass realization, sight-singing, and ear-training improvement.

About Monica

I am a flutist, keyboardist, vocalist, director, composer, arranger, and educator who has performed in chamber ensembles specializing in Baroque repertoire since 1998. I have over twenty years of professional flute and piano performance as well as instruction on those instruments to my credit. My studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison covered the theoretical, historical, and performing aspects of music. My coursework in Madison led me to researching the secular cantatas of Christoph Graupner in Darmstadt, Germany on a Fulbright.

In addition to interest in performing newly-composed music for traverso and harpsichord, my recent work with many different people as a church music director has led me back to a want to teach ...

Music theory is the mathematics behind the art. It connects math to what we hear, see and feel in music. Understanding theory can help you accentuate the piece you are working on, improve your improvisational skills, and connect you to the music on a deeper level. This can be the most difficult part about learning music. But have no fear!! I love to make sense out of the non-sense! We can add theory practices to your instrumental lesson or take them separately.

About Mary

I started playing saxophone in 1994. It was an immediate passion! As the years went on my thirst for music grew and I picked up more instruments. No matter which instrument I play the passion is the same. I like to write and arrange as well so I feel an extreme importance on music theory. I am classically trained although my drive is always towards roots music. I try my hardest to combine those two elements.

I currently play baritone saxophone in the Uptown Savages. I am also in the Dead Man's Carnival. In that I may play Alto, Tenor, Baritone Sax, Flute, Bass Clarinet, Accordion, Piano or sing. You can hear me on recordings by the Invaders, Midwest Death Rattle, Into Arcadia, various compilation albums throughout the world and the soon to be released Uptown Savages Album.

Mary was amazing teacher for me, and she really sparked my passion for music. I had really just started clarinet when I began taking lessons from her, and I truly believe one of the reasons I am going into music is because of how she made me see it. In the short time that I was able to be her student I learned more than just the fundamentals, and have yet to find a teacher that I work with as well as I did with her. If I could take up lessons with her again, I would in a heartbeat.

Mary and I started working together after I co-founded a 60s soul/R&B/ska/reggae-beat band in which I sang vocals and was asked to play alto sax by the bandleader. I hadn't played sax in years (clarinet is my primary instrument), and among other things, I needed to start learning how to improvise - challenging for a symphonic band player whose head was always in sheet music. Mary's approach and teaching methods worked well for me; she's great at getting to know you as a player and your goals, and once she did that for me, she was immediately able to formulate a course of action. In the six months we were together, my tone, pitch, and playing improved, and my confidence grew. I heartily recommend Mary; no matter your instrument, she will get right down to business, keep you moving, and inject some fun into the whole process. A great player and entertainer, Mary has been a strong role model for me. I am grateful for everything I've learned from her, and I look forward to working with her again.

I try to integrate music theory into all of my lessons and how it relates to the instrument, but if you have specific interest in pursuing it further I am happy to help.

About Nick

I am a Milwaukee area musician that enjoys music in all its diverse forms. My main instrument is the trombone (specifically the bass trombone) but I regularly teach and play all the low brass instruments, including baritone/euphonium and tuba. I also have a good deal of experience playing and teaching guitar and ukulele as well. I enjoy teaching above all else and hope to share the wonderful things music has done for me. My top goal in any lesson is to find out how music fits into the student's life and help them reach their own musical goals.

Lessons in theory will be involved in piano lessons of course, but I can tutor or teach the fundamentals of music theory to anyone!

About Steven

I am currently a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee earning a MM in piano performance. I graduated with a BA in performance from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2014.
I have experience teaching students of several ages and skill levels. Whether the student is a beginner or an advanced player, I can provide new skills that they can take with them throughout their life, not just in music!
I'm a former piano instructor of Hovland Conservatory in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota. For a few short months I taught about 40 students a week. Along with my experience, I've taken courses on piano pedagogy reviewing methods and styles of teaching where I learned valuable skills and methods. Because of this experience I am qualified to teach piano and theory ...
