With almost 10 years of secondary teaching experience, both in a charter and public school setting, I am confident in my ability to become an asset to your student's individual educational needs!
A graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa (2003), I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education with emphasis in both vocal performance and flute. I am incredibly active in several music professional organizations including FBA, FMEA/FSMA, MENC, IBA, and IAAE, as well as being an alum of Mu Phi Epsilon, a National Honorary Music Fraternity.
I was honored to be nominated each year while teaching at Ainger for the Charlotte County Teacher of the Year and was selected as the 2004 Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for Charlotte County. This honor comes from student nominations that are sent in and was awarded $1000 to purchase supplies for my program.
Professionally, I have served as the Florida Bandmasters Association District 16 Secretary (Middle School), as well as the District 15 Secretary and later Chairperson in addition to being a member of the the the FBA State Executive Board and Broward Music Educators Association. (BMEA) Executive Board. I was also the Guest Conductor for the 2008 Superintendent's Middle School Honor Chorus in Miami-Dade and am currently interning as a State Adjudicator in both Jazz and Solo and Ensemble as well as my work with various area schools as a guest clinician.
I have performed with the Des Moines Metro Opera, Ingersoll Children's and Dinner Theatres, Drama Workshop, Des Moines Playhouse, Oster Regent Theatre and was selected by the Donna Reed Foundation in 1998 as the Top Iowa Vocalist.
I studied flute with Ms. Karrie Tate and voice with Dr. Les Hale, Dr. Robert L. Larsen, Dr. Maria DiPalma and Ms. Jacqueline Thompson.
I believe that every student, regardless of ability or age, can grow musically. My purpose is to enrich and challenge students by helping them discover the special meaning that exists only in creating, re-creating, and experiencing music. In this way, I hope to inspire and motivate your child to achieve their fullest potential in music.

I am here to provide students a comprehensive, balanced education in instrumental and vocal music. Through the study of music, students develop intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially. Intellectual growth is enhanced through the student's ever-increasing knowledge of musical concepts; its unique notation system, terminology, styles, historical eras, and historical figures. Physically, students must adapt to the many challenges of learning an instrument and transforming symbols into sound. Students also develop a sense of leadership through learning to work side-by-side with others in a group setting. Perhaps the most unique and essential element making music education so special, however, is that it provides students the opportunity to develop aesthetically. Aesthetic education helps a student develop his/her own natural responsiveness to the power of music. Through studying, creating and experiencing quality music, the student becomes more attuned to his/her individual expressiveness. Simply put, music educates the whole child-mind, body and heart.
I believe there is no more powerful a way for my students to explore and understand what it means to be human in all its many facets than through the creation and experience of music. My personal goal as a music educator is always to increase my students abilities to perceive, experience, and react to the expressive qualities of music by providing students personally fulfilling and meaningful opportunities for musical experiences.
Vocal students will receive proper instruction in breathing, articulation, phonation, vocal health, various vocalizes, as well as other aspects of proper vocal technique in addition to extensive repertoire.
Piano students will receive proper instruction in posture, hand position, music theory, scales and finger exercises as well as harmonization and transposition in addition to extensive repertoire.
Woodwind students will receive proper instruction with attention to music theory, embouchure, correct posture and playing positions, maintenance and care of their instruments, breathing, intonation, articulation, various warm-up techniques and tone in addition to extensive repertoire.

I have utilized Essential Elements 2000 as well as Rubank Advanced Volumes as well as various All-State etude method books....Focus is on correct warming up and technique ie (Flute-Taffanel, Hughes, Filas, etc.) as well as solo/literature. Many things have been passed down to me from my own previous mentors/teachers including Karrie Tate on Flute, and Les Hale, Maria DiPalma and Maestro Robert L. Larsen in voice.

Professional guitarist/vocalist since 1976. Performed in Rock bands, Show Bands, Calypso bands, Jazz bands, and, yes, Wedding Bands. I have performed as a solo guitarist for wedding ceremonies, art shows, and other private functions. I have also performed on the trumpet and saxophone in bands, and on the violin and cello for wedding ceremonies.
Private guitar and bass instructor since 1984; Orchestral strings instructor since 1988.
My students benefit from my professional experience in that they focus directly on what is necessary as a performer and don't waste time on strictly theoretical exercises.
*** Lesson Details ***
When students take lessons from me I take some time to get to know their reasons for wanting to play the instrument and who their favorite artists/bands are. That way I can gear the lessons towards their interests which keeps them motivated and helps them relate what they're learning to "real-world" music.
I try to make the learning of music and technique as much fun as possible using challenges and games.
I base my lessons on a research based curriculum called "Jump right In" where students will eventually learn to "hear" the music they are reading the same way one hears the words they are reading in a book. Then, based on their age and interests, I use whatever instrumental technique books I feel are best suited for that particular individual.
After 3-6 months guitar students should be able to read and play basic chord progressions and simple single note melodies both by ear and by using standard music notation. This will mostly be in first position.
Similarly, Bass students should be able to read and play bass lines that fit basic chord progressions, and be able to play simple single note melodies in first position.
String students should have basic control of the bow and be able to read and play simple melodies by ear and by using standard music notation on at least 3 strings in first position.

I provide an amplifier, sound system, chairs, music stands, Keyboard with rhythm section, and a computer with a vast selection of music for listening and performing.

I provide supplemental materials, my own guitar and music stand and an Mp3 recorder to record lessons.

Phil's career began as a scholarship student at the prestigious University of Miami Frost School of Music studying under both Gary Keller and Whit Sidener. Phil was a featured soloist in the renowned Concert Jazz Band or CJB, alongside artists such as Maria Schneider, David Liebman, James Moody and Vince Mendoza to name a few. At UM, Phil also participated in the Grammy Nominated UM Romances album featuring an originally commissioned work by composer Maria Schneider as well as garnered a Downbeat Award for his work with the Funk Fusion Ensemble. At the age of 20, Phil took an opportunity to go on tour with pop icon KC and the Sunshine Band. Over two world tours, Phil performed as a horn section member and soloist on the NBC Today Show, PBS, The Ellen Degeneres Show as well as countless venues such as the Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide Entertainment Center, the Monostero di Colonna in Tran-Barletta, Italy, Downtown Dallas for the Superbowl and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Phil's playing career has spanned the globe including Amsterdam, Italy, Hawaii, Kauai, The Cayman Islands, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Sweden as well as Las Vegas, Atlantic City and most of the continental U.S opening for such acts as the Commodores, Martha Wash and Nelly. In 2006, Phil completed his undergraduate work as well as a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, studying under Chip McNeill. In Chicago, his hometown, Phil was a regular member of the Chicago jazz scene including many collaborations and solo work on several recording projects including Tito Carrillo's Opening Statement on Origin Records as well as many festivals including the Chicago Jazz Festival. During his two year tenure at Eastern Washington University, Phil served as both Interim Director of Jazz Studies (2012-2013) and Saxophone Studio Chair (2012-2014). Under his direction in 2013, the EWU Concert Jazz Band was accepted to perform at the Next Gen Jazz Festival in Monterey, CA affiliated with the Monterey Jazz Festival which placed EWU in the same category as the USC Thornton School of Music. Phil has also composed original music for a full length independent film Fools Gold (of Hollywood 27 Productions) and has contributed music to several commercial music productions including NBC. Most recently, Phil was invited to perform at the 2013 Reykjavik Jazz Festival in Iceland sharing the honor with saxophonist Joshua Redman as one of only two American band leaders to perform and was mentioned on the U.S. Embassy Facebook page as a result. Phil has been a guest artist at Ball State University, Coeur D Alene H.S. and has adjudicated several Washington State area festivals, performed and been interviewed on KEWU radio, WDNA radio (Florida) appeared on KXLY news and KHQ news (Spokane) and performed on several occasions with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra and the Bob Curnow Big Band. Phil is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Music Arts at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music under a T.A. and Fellowship in Coral Gables, FL.
