About Me

I have been professionally singing and taking voice lessons since the age of 9! I went through various styles in my love and performance of music, starting with the Beatles, Aretha Franklin and all of Motown, Jazz (Ella Fitzgerald), R&B, and Classical/Opera (starting when I was in high school and attending Interlochen Arts Camp)...

Having received a Bachelor's of Music in Voice (Music Theatre Performance) from NYU, I stayed in NYC after graduation performing in musical theatre and theatre, mostly in the city.

In 2009, I decided to apply to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, with the intent to broaden my range of skill and opportunity as a performer, but also with the intention to teach, with the higher degree strengthening this possibility. I began to teach voice lessons to fellow students while at LAMDA. When I returned to NYC, I began to build my own voice studio in of post-graduate students and adults looking to further develop their vocal practice or begin a vocal practice. I found that in my vocal lessons, I was using physical exercises as for the actor, to incorporate in my private teaching method. I believe in doing, not only watching and observing. This, in conjunction with movement and full-body execution, opens the student vocally and emotionally. I chose to go to LAMDA because the classical training and approach to theatre training in England is extremely physical. They work from the outside in, and I find that the language of the body is universal to students of any intellectual capacity, and I strive to bring this into my approach in any type of teaching format!

I enable my students to hone their craft and find their own style of expression through the exploration of music in a multitude of genres and cultures.

Subjects Taught

Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Songwriting

About Me

I have been playing guitar for 12 years. I have been involved in various high school and college metal bands, and am currently in a comical, animal rights themed death metal band called Animals Killing People.

I took piano lessons from a young age before starting guitar, but would find myself playing pieces by ear more often than improving on my sight reading skills. Switching to guitar has been great for me, as I think the instrument provides more opportunity for expression and personalization than the piano; to me, a pianist seems to be more of a vessel who can interpret a composer's intent from sheet music.

I began college as a music student in the conservatory of music at SUNY Purchase, but ultimately switched majors to Anthropology in favor of a liberal arts degree.

My recent employment has included Stepping Stones Museum for Children and children's snowboard instruction at Mohawk Mountain.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching guitar lessons for 10 years. I have taught guitar players of many abilities and ages. I take pride in having taught students with special needs with some success, notably one student who was hearing impaired and one diagnosed with autism.

I teach my lessons with a laid back, friendly approach. I focus heavily on a student's favorite music and genre preferences, and have my students pick which songs they wish to learn accordingly. My instruction of their selected songs involves in-depth explanations of the various left hand and right hand techniques executed throughout the song. On some occasions, I recommend songs or selections from songs that will expand on techniques covered in a recent song.

This approach to guitar instruction provides self esteem both in a student's taste in music and in a student's ability on the guitar while a student learns nearly every technique used in modern guitar playing. Students will also learn a basic understanding of music theory as it applies to modern guitar playing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I use the same equipment as I do for travel. I have an extra amplifier, a Marshall DXM that students can plug into.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I use my tried and true first guitar, my Epiphone Les Paul, and a Line 6 Spider amplifier for electric guitar lessons, and I use a Rogue dreadnought for acoustic lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in folk, neofolk, new age, alternative, hard rock, heavy metal, death metal (and other forms of extreme music), hardcore punk, d beat, post hardcore, and grindcore. All students will be exposed to blues and chordal acoustic playing.

As for advanced teaching, my teaching style helps students to open their minds so they can enjoy themselves through music. I enjoy teaching my students helpful ways to think about music, as opposed to just teaching them to execute the right notes. For example I might say "play the piano like you sing, and sing as if you are telling a story!" This is an important part of my teaching philosophy.

I have students auditioned for America's Got Talent, the Disney Channel and the Met Opera Children Chorus

*** Lesson Details ***
Student focused learning is at the center of my teaching philosophy. At the beginning of the first lesson I want to find out the students musical goals, interests and motivation. I aim to meet the student where they are at, and find fun and engaging ways to teach them more about singing and music. After a few months of lessons students can expect to have further understanding of how the voice works (voice students), music theory, performance methods, technique and stylistic tools in their given genre. Students can also expect to have fun, my hope for students leave their lessons each week feeling uplifted, happy and confident.

In my experience, students benefit by learning from many different experiences that address their multiple intelligence e.g. logical, visual, musical, kinesthetic, verbal etc. When teaching I aim to connect skills being learnt with the context of performance while teaching to the students preference learning style.

Trust between my students and I provide the container for the learning process. As a teacher I believe it is my role to facilitate and engage in a reciprocal relationship that inspires the student to learn. My teaching approach is characterized by qualities of love and commitment to singing and music. I love sharing my passion, experiences and knowledge so that students may benefit and share the joy of music. I am flexible and laid back in my approach, while ensuring that each lesson is productive.

It is integral to the learning process to work incrementally, introducing new material skillfully and in achievable portions. This provides maximum opportunity for the student to have as many successes as possible during the lesson. I have found this way of working leaves the student feeling as if each task is achievable. As the teacher I maintain both long and short term goals with my students. In order to reach these desired goals it is important to see the bigger picture while working incrementally week to week.
