Hello, my name is Richard. I love all things music, but my primary areas of focus are Piano and Music Literacy and Theory. My musical journey began when I was 6 years old, shortly after my grandparent's piano came to reside in my parents' home. I began piano lessons during that summer after first grade. By the time I was in junior high, my teacher thought I was ready for a more advanced teacher, and so I began taking lessons from someone who had traveled to Europe to study music. In college, I continued my musical journey, graduating in 2002 with a Bachelors in Church Music with a Piano Principal and again in 2004 with a Masters in the same. I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

I am an active musician in the Baltimore and Philadelphia area working as a pianist, guitarist, producer, and composer. I graduated from the university of the arts with a degree in music performance performing in different ensembles from Latin jazz to the school's production of "Porgy and Bess." i have been teaching students of all ages for 3 years now and love working with children. I was born in Charlestown West Virginia. My musical career started at age 3 when my parents placed a pair of drum sticks in my hands. I started playing drums in church and then progressed to play in middle school were I was apart of the jazz band and orchestra. With some very early lessons, I begin to blossom into a skillful drummer. I then continued to play in bands in high school and, in addition, became apart of the Milford Mill Academy Marching Band. In my sophomore year, I became the section leader of the drum line were I played the snare drum. I have 2 degrees in music theory from Deer Park Magnet school and Morgan State University. I have performed with many bands from different musical genres such as gospel, funk, pop, jazz, blues, rock, latin, reggae, and r&b. I have been playing guitar for around 28 years, I have performed in many states and continue to do so. Playing live is a very special part of playing music, I have also recorded in the studio - it's always great to put your music onto a cd or help a fellow musician out and record when they need someone else to listen. Plus you always have your recording to listen to for a long time. My background comes from learning from a nationally known professional musician who has been performing for over 30 years on world tours & recorded on 10 different albums. I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I am currently working on a doctoral degree at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. Music and teaching music have been my passions for as long as I can remember! Throughout my career as a student, I have explored many musical paths and instruments. All these experiences contributed to making me the well-rounded and intelligent musician I am today.

My undergraduate degree is from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in Music education where I am certified to teach any music from students K-12. Currently, I am pursuing a masters degree in Vocal Performance and Opera from the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University where I study under Phyllis Bryn-Julson.
