"Julia sings with the Seattle Women's Choir and hosts 2 annual studio recitals. In 2010 she received her Bachelor of Music from Washington State University. While attending University Julia was an avid performer of the WSU Atrium Recital Series, the School's Musicals, Operettas, and a member of the Cougar Marching Band."

***Lesson Details***I make a personalized plan for each student depending on their goals and level of commitment. The level of intensity varies depending on what the student wants out of lessons. Some of my students are singing competitively, and some are just singing for fun!

At each lesson, the student plays or sings the songs they have been working on. We will celebrate the improvements and then identify any trouble spots. I will help them figure out what is causing the weak spot and how to solve the problem. Then we will move on, and learn a new song!

I believe learning a new instrument or learning to sing can be a great adventure. One of my favorite parts about teaching is watching my students grow and watching their skills evolve.

About Me

Mezzo-Soprano Jordan M., will be making her Tacoma Opera role debut of Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in February 2014. In the summer of 2013, she was accepted by Maestro Alberto Zedda for his Accademia Rossiniana program in Pesaro, Italy, and participated in Cincinnati Conservatory’s Realizing Rossini program as Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Ms. M. is a recent graduate of San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and studies with Mezzo-Soprano Catherine Cook. While at the Conservatory she had the opportunity to sing Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, Virtu in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Beth in Little Women during her undergraduate and graduate studies.

Jordan made her professional debut with Kitsap opera in the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly in the Fall of 2011; shortly thereafter she sang the role of Hansel in Hansel and Gretel for a three-month tour for Portland Opera (Oregon). In the summer of 2012 Ms. M.attended Si Parla, si canta, a six week language intensive program in Urbania, Italy where she had the opportunity to study with Meastro Zedda, and Baritone Hakan Hagegard. She also participated in Stephen Stubbs’ baroque program Accademia d’amore where she delved into baroque rhetoric, dance, and collaborated with baroque instruments. In the Spring of 2013 she completed her residency at Tacoma Opera, where she covered Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte, Carmen in La Tradegie de Carmen, and performed the role of Annina in La Traviata. Equally at home in Lieder, and recital she was a participant in San Francisco’s Lieder Alive!, with Master teacher Hakan Hagegard, and has given two solo recitals in Seattle, and Tacoma with Second City Chamber Series, and Music Northwest.

Her upcoming engagements include, singing Rosina with Tacoma Opera’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, with Tacoma Opera. Singing as principal soloist with Bremerton Symphony, in February 2014, and Singing the role of Junon in Charpentier’s Acteon with Queen City Musicians sponsored by the Early Music Guild of Seattle, in the spring of 2014.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons begin with stretching, vocal warm ups, scales, and extensive breath work, as well as resolving any tensions that may be hindering your vocal production. I then through collaboration with the student, work on beginning repertoire that is suited for the voice, and challenging at the same time. I record all lessons, and email them to the student so that one has the opportunity to review the warm ups, and hear the improvement in the voice, I also write a review of every lesson, with notated warm-ups and a list of "To Do's" for the week so that the student will have a structured practice week. I provide music, and if needed recordings of the pieces so that the student can take the materials back to their homes and practice them on their own.

I track the range of the voice, and usually within a month it will have improved by at least 4 notes either higher or lower.

For some students learning music is just as much a part of the lesson as learning to sing. I love teaching people of all ages how to read music, so that the student can be an independent teacher for themselves and learn music on their own at home, this I think is very important in order to improve skills for singing, the faster the student can learn music, the more time can be spent working on technique and improving the sound of the voice.

It is important to note that learning voice is a highly individualized journey, each person will have their own set of strengths and weaknesses, as a teacher it is my job to asses this in a person and craft a curriculum, and style that will fit those individual needs.

There is no feeling in the world than the freedom and beauty of singing, it is a joy to hear in my students, and very fulfilling to teach this kind of wonderfully positive experience to people of all ages!

I received my B.A. in vocal performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2009. I am a classically trained singer, however I enjoy all genre’s of music and firmly believe having a classical base in a singing technique will enrich any style of music you wish to work toward. I am devoted to healthy singing, and unlocking your true timbre and voice with extensive breath, and vowel work. As a graduate from a highly competitive music institution I can help in guiding students along the right path of pursuing this art form at a collegiate level.

About Me

Hello! My name is Serena!

Music shapes my life and has made me the person I am today. My experience in training in opera, musical theatre, jazz, and pop has expanded my musical skills and knowledge. Not only have I been trained in performance, but I have also studied music history, music theory, conducting, movement training, ballet, Alexander Technique, acting, yoga, stage craft, improvisation, other languages, diction and the International Phonetic Alphabet, voice science and anatomy, and vocal pedagogy. I have completed my Bachelor of Music in Operatic Vocal Performance from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University under the tutelage of the legendary Carol Vaness. I have also studied with acclaimed teachers and coaches around the world including Dr. Kari Ragan and Maestro Dean Williamson.

My upcoming performances include singing THE QUEEN OF THE NIGHT with Portland Summer Opera's "THE MAGIC FLUTE" by Mozart. Recent performances include a Soloist World Premiere of "In Nocte Plena" by Tommaso Traetta with Ensign Symphony at Benaroya Hall, Seattle, both Adele and Ida in Skagit Opera's production of Johann Strauss's "Die Fledermaus", and both Queen of the Night and First Lady with NOISE's production of "The Magic Flute". I have also been the featured soloist as "Christine" in Ten Grand's Phantom of the Opera at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA, and many lead roles in both opera and musical theatre: such as Countess Ceprano and Gilda (Rigoletto), Blondchen (Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail), Maria (West Side Story), La Fee (Cendrillon), Sarah Brown (Guys and Dolls), Cathy (The Last 5 Years), Rosina (Barber of Seville), and more! I have also been part of jazz ensembles, and won the Battle of the Bands at Indiana University with a rock group! I am proud to have won the Encouragement Award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions, First Place in the National Classical Singers Competition, the C.M. Gerber Scholarship, Music Dean's Scholarship, Music Faculty Award, First Place at Washington State Solo and Ensemble Competitions, First Place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Competitions, and many more!

Teaching brings me such joy! To share the love of music and to educate the musicians of tomorrow is both gratifying and inspiring. I have been teaching since 2006 and provide a fun and focused learning experience where there are no "wrong" questions, and everybody's unique voice is celebrated! Many of my students have gone on to study music in college, and have landed lead roles in musical theatre, choir solos, All State and All Northwest choirs, and won awards in Classical competitions.

In my spare time, I like to practice yoga, dance, and have recently taken up aerial silk acrobatics as a hobby!

*** Lesson Details ***
My studio provides musical knowledge through private lessons including healthy vocal technique, basic understanding of music theory, and basic piano skills. I encourage a fun and focused environment. Come ready to learn, and let's make music!

A typical lesson will include vocalises that detail proper technique, some ear training work, some music theory training, and will be followed by repertoire. During this time, students will learn how to produce clear and authentic diction (English and other languages), breath management, phrase shaping, smooth transitions between higher and lower pitches, stylistic ornamentation, as well as dramatic involvement of the piece.

Students will learn the importance of the foundations of breath support, and how to create a healthy sound for any genre while keeping the unique qualities of their own voice-- no cookie-cutter singers here! Students will also learn how to read music, practice effectively, perform authentically, and take care of their delicate instrument for a lifetime of singing!

While Skype is a marvelous tool that has revolutionized the world of teaching, nothing can replicate natural acoustics. In-studio lessons are suggested for a clearer and more personable lesson.

STUDIO ABSENCE and CANCELLATION POLICIES:
Regularly scheduled and attended lessons are the best way to see positive changes in your voice! The smooth running of the Studio Schedule helps make that happen. Therefore, missing lessons is discouraged and make up lessons/cancellations are not given in the Studio unless:
- I have had a performance or rehearsal that conflicts with our lesson time and cannot have the lesson as scheduled. If this occurs, I will inform you of the event as soon as possible and give you the option of a make up lesson or cancelling the lesson.
- Notices of foreseen cancellations (family vacations, religious holidays, school functions, special occasions etc.) are eligible for rescheduling or cancellation if given before the first lesson of the month.
- Of course, life can throw us for a loop! Illness, emergencies, and unforeseen events may possibly be given make ups or cancellations and will be determined at the Studio's discretion. (In the matter of illness: standard procedure is that if the student can attend work/school, they should come to their lesson. A cold can easily be worked around. If the voice is affected (for singing students), Studio time can still be used to work on ear training, music theory, music history, etc.)

All other absences will result in the lesson being marked as "missed". A hard copy of the Studio Policies and further details will be given to the student at the first lesson. Please feel free to ask any questions or clarifications.

The studio lessons take place in an open room in the front of the house. The room includes seating for parents to observe lessons as well as a weighted keyboard (88 keys), music stand, desk, and materials. No pets. Lots of street parking is available.

About Me

I have been teaching voice and music lessons for several years now to a wide range and variety of students. I have successfully helped individuals learn how to sing, speak, act, write songs, and play the piano. Some students come to me to build their confidence or skills. Other students come to me just to have a really great time. All my students grow from their experiences learning music with me. I use a variety of methods and it all depends on what you, as a student, are needing from your lessons.

My background is diverse. I have written and recorded dozens of musical albums over the last decade. I often perform for music and theater events in Seattle and Washington. I have a bachelor of science in contemporary vocal performance and a master of arts in information and learning technologies (educational psychology and online learning). I am very involved in the theater industry within Seattle and direct productions from time to time.

I work out of my apartment close to Capitol Hill in Seattle, Washington. I can also arrange online lessons. I am, however, not mobile.

With more than twenty years experience as a choir director and vocal artist, I have worked extensively in studio and on stage. I have participated in numerous studio recordings, concerts, festivals, radio- and TV broadcasts. I have performed in big musical events such as the Presidential Palace of Ukraine, before the Latvian Government, as an instructor and conductor at international choir festivals such as Copenhagen Gospel Festival and Krakow Gospel Festival, and as a participant in Clash of the Choirs (TV 4, Sweden).
