I have been playing guitar for 12 years. I have been involved in various high school and college metal bands, and am currently in a comical, animal rights themed death metal band called Animals Killing People. I took piano lessons from a young age before starting guitar, but would find myself playing pieces by ear more often than improving on my sight reading skills. Switching to guitar has been great for me, as I think the instrument provides more opportunity for expression and personalization than the piano; to me, a pianist seems to be more of a vessel who can interpret a composer's intent from sheet music. I began college as a music student in the conservatory of music at SUNY Purchase, but ultimately switched majors to Anthropology in favor of a liberal arts degree. My ...

I tried to teach guitar in the same manner in which I teach every instrument. First I teach students the rudiments of the instrument. Also I teach them how to read and a bit of music theory. From that point I like to follow the students lead. They bring in songs that they would like to learn, or possibly how to play lead guitar, or how to finger pick. At every point I try to point out general aspects of music that need to be learned from the material that they choose.

I teach from a student's existing musical reality. Regardless of age, people have music that they like and love, as well as dislike. Through speaking with a student, I gather musical styles, genres, composers, artists, and songs that the student enjoys and I begin teaching this music to the student immediately, regardless of musical knowledge on their instrument. In the case of a beginner student, I customize personal arrangements of musical pieces for each student to match a student's current musical skill set. I have found that a student has as much to show me about their own musical reality than I have to show about mine. I am more of a facilitator than a traditional teacher. I help set up goals as far as song selections, and various performance possibilities: sight-reading and ...
