Music Theory, Piano, Viola, Violin

About Me

Hello, I'm Alison and welcome to my page! I truly believe that music is a gift and I am passionate about sharing that gift through teaching and playing. I love music and I definitely love teaching private lessons, which I have been doing for about 7 years now! Every student brings new challenges of which I'm ready to tackle with them and help them grow.

I received my degree in viola performance from the University of Louisville School of Music in May 2010. I studied under Chien-Ju Liao along with many other great violists in the Louisville community. I've also had the pleasure of playing with many quartets, chamber ensembles and orchestras including Louisville Youth Orchestra, All-State, the UofL Symphony, and the Louisville Orchestra. Some of my greatest moments involve playing in Carnegie Hall and premiering a world-class ballet performance with the UofL Symphony Orchestra. Music has been a part of my life since I was little and I can't imagine life without it. Along with viola, I also study, play and teach piano and violin. I have been playing viola now for 14 years and piano for about 12!

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm not a really strict teacher but I do encourage my students to push themselves and really make the most of their practice time, especially if they have busy schedules. I believe in customizing my teaching style to my student's needs and desires. I also like to give tons of positive feedback, I love to praise my students on how far they have come and the techniques they are improving on, while never sacrificing constructive feedback.

After 3 months with a beginning Viola, Violin, or Piano student, I expect them to be able to read the notes (without having to write them all in), understand basic rhythms, learned how to play a scale (or more), and have completed a few of songs.

After 6 months, I expect that my students will have relative ease with reading their music, playing with hands together on piano, and starting to master basic bowing techniques and coordination on Violin and Viola.

Learning an instrument is so rewarding, and with the right teacher, can be a wonderful experience. I want my students to have that wonderful experience, I am encouraging, enthusiastic and I make my teaching style as comprehensive and interesting as possible!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room, grand piano, room for parents to wait on a couch or chair, music stand, metronome

*** Travel Equipment ***
music, instrument, shoulder rest and rosin (violin and viola)

*** Specialties ***
I mainly focus on classical. As I teach, I incorporate music theory so that my students may have a better understanding of how the music is structured.

About Me

***Music Bio***

Anna B. grew up in Greenville, IN and currently resides in New Albany, IN. Anna picked up her first violin at the age of 9 in her grade school orchestra program. Patrick Rafferty at the University of Louisville and graduated in Spring of 2010, on a music scholarship, with a Bachelor of Arts in music with emphasis in violin performance and a minor in marketing. While at UofL she was a three year member of the Intercollegiate Orchestra, took a semester jazz improvisation course from Ansyn Banks, and has studied fiddle and mandolin on and off with renowned bluegrass musician Jeff Guernsey.

Anna is a member of the the Paducah Symphony Orchestra and is also the fiddler/mandolinist for the Folk/Americana band Southern Sirens. She has performed as part of the LOVE/Revolution Show in the Kaleidoscope I's backup string section with "Abbey Road on the River" and has performed in the backup orchestra of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Some career highlights include sharing the stage with 2x Grammy Winner Laurence Juber (Paul McCartney's Wings) and Ambrosia at Abbey Road on the River and accompanying 2x Grammy Nominated pianist Terrence Wilson and world renowned violinist Ilya Kaler with the Paducah Symphony.

She also organizes the annual Arts Council of Southern Indiana Harvest Homecoming 'Fiddle Fest' each year.

***Music Lessons***

Anna is certified Suzuki Teacher in ECC and Book 1. Her teaching method is a mix of traditional classical training with aspects of the Suzuki method. Each student is different and learns in different ways. Anna's approach to teaching is finding how each student learns best and adapting to their needs. In a very general analysis of how she teaches lessons you should expect to work on a new scale and etude (exercise) every 1-2 weeks while also preparing a solo over a longer amount of time. There are also other aspects such as music theory and ear training that are also scattered throughout. When teaching fiddling improvisation is also touched upon.

Anna understands that not everyone wants to become a professional musician. She wants to make sure that she pushes to reach your goals and is happy to help you figure out what those goals may be.
