While the foundation for all styles of singing is essentially the same, I specialize in teaching contemporary styles (as opposed to classical singing). Contemporary styles such as rock, pop, blues, gospel, country, jazz and Latin have very different styling than classical singing and as such once correct basic vocal technique is established it should be taught very differently than traditional classical singing. I'll help you get power, more range (to be able to sing higher and lower) pitch control (to sing mor ein tune), better tone, more musicality and versatility through a combination of exercises and learning the songs that you love.
I have been a professional musician and teacher all my adult life. Music is my passion and has always been how I make a living. I teach piano/keyboards, guitar, voice, bass and ukulele. I studied classical piano at SUNY at Buffalo and I initially learned to play guitar and singing on my own. Years later I studied voice and guitar with great professional instructors. I am familiar with different ways of learning music: from very structured and traditional methods (that we use in classical music) to more improvisational and "by ear" approaches as we often do in popular music. This helps me tailor my music teaching specifically to each student based on his/her musical preferences, abilities and learning style. I can teach all styles of music including: Pop, Rock, Blues, Country, Bluegrass, ...

I have a B.M. from Berklee College of Music with an emphasis in Folk, Bluegrass, and traditional music but can teach any style. Would you like to have a better ear? Be able to hear chord changes quicker and translate that to your instrument? Or would you like to have a better grasp on theory and how to translate that knowledge onto your instrument? While attending Berklee, I taught all music theory subjects (jazz and traditional harmony), ear training, counterpoint, and songwriting through the school and was involved in the tutoring department. Are you looking to develop your songwriting? Would you like to write better lyrics? Or use a deeper theoretical knowledge to find new writing techniques and your unique voice? While living in Boston, I received accolades and awards ...

I am a voice trainer and therapist with professional experience as a singer and actor and have taught professional singers and actors singing voice in New York City and Washington, D.C. from 1985 onward. This approach to singing voice comes from the physiological principles of Bel Canto School of Singing Voice in Italy. My teacher, Margaret Laughlin Riddleberger, who I trained with from 1979 to 2002, was the inheritor of this body centered approach and which she and I developed further in workshops and body training and exercise for singers. You really cannot be taught to sing! Singing is a natural aspect of the human expression system and is the same essential physiological process as speaking. In this approach, we discover that most of us are doing something unnatural when we ...
