RICHARD: Pianist Richard V. made his New York debut at the age of 16 at New York’s Carl Fisher Hall. Upon winning 1st Prize in piano competitions sponsored by the Queens Symphony Orchestra and the Queens College Orchestral Society at age 19 and 20, he performed Beethoven’s 4th and 5th Piano Concertos respectively with these orchestras.
He then received his Masters degree from Juilliard while a student of the renowned pianist and pedagogue Ilona Kabos. After graduation from Juilliard, Richard began studies for his Ph.D., which he received from New York University.
He has performed extensively as recitalist, soloist and chamber musician in the New York area in such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Hunter College Auditorium, Lefrak Hall, Colden Auditorium, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and radio station WQXR. Richard is the founder and frequent performer at the Chamber Music Society of Five Towns College where is a full professor.
For many years, Richard taught music K-12 at the Commack Public Schools, where he was innovative, highly respected and well loved. He is a master teacher of piano and many of his students have gone on to careers in music.
I teach the traditional classical approach at my studio. My methods are highly successful, in that I show the student how to learn, believing in the old axiom: "Give a man a fish you've fed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime."
I work on technique based on solid pianistic principles from the very first lesson. The approach is natural, with concentration on relaxation. Progress is very rapid, with basic understanding within a few weeks. Even those who have had problems in the past soon find they can overcome their difficulties.
I work from the simple to the complex. I start from where the student is, and take it from there. As the great pianist Richter (who had an enormous repertoire) said "I learn one page at a time." Generally, I let the student choose what he/she wants to play from a list I have OKed. My students come away feeling their lessons have been a greatly enjoyable and enlightening experience.
