I am a teacher, musician and songwriter born and raised in Brooklyn. I began taking piano lessons as a child, got my first harmonica at thirteen years old, and my first guitar the year after that. At sixteen I started teaching music lessons and learning advanced theory on the side. Later, I studied theory more formally in San Diego, learning classical guitar, composition, ear training, and piano.
In the summers I teach woodworking to 800 children in a day camp and coordinate a weekend series of free concerts in my local community garden. The rest of the year, when not performing and recording my own material, I teach music to adults and children of all ages. My love of music is combined with genuine enjoyment of teaching. I would describe myself as a confident, relaxed, ...
Michael has a long and versatile career in music. As a songwriter/composer, he's written for ABC, CNN, Showtime, PBS, and for several films. As a musician, he's played live or recorded with Diddy, MA$E, Richard Gere, Shawn Colvin, and many others. Because of his broad knowledge of American Music, he was asked to co-create the shows, "120 years of Popular Song" and "New York City - A Century of Songs." He was a conductor for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS during its original run, and has appeared or played in several other Broadway and off-Broadway shows.
If you want to learn music that goes beyond labels, Michael is your guy!

I've been a professional musician and teacher for 15 years, having played in Europe, Australia, Canada, and across the US with lots of different groups. I've even played on the Late Show with David Letterman and the Ellen DeGeneres Show! I love to play all kinds of music including classical violin and viola, but I'm also active as a fiddler in many different styles including bluegrass, old-time, swing, jazz, Irish, and Swedish folk. I play claw-hammer banjo (not three-finger style), and mandolin as well. I have a Master of Music in Violin from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
I love teaching because it makes me approach the technical details of music in different ways with each student. I love working with motivated students who come to each lesson with ...
I started playing acoustic guitar when I was seven years old (off and on). I then started traveling more and found the mandolin to be so much easier to carry around and so much fun, it was hard to stop playing it. I have been playing and teaching mostly bluegrass, old time, Irish, blues, and swing jazz styles for many years. I have taught both privately and have also done various workshops at festivals. I have taught multiple years for instance at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival in PA, The Traditions week at Common Ground on the Hill Festival in MD, etc
My students learn to have fun with music. Students can work on rhythms, melodies, improvisation, song writing, arranging tunes, music theory, getting into and/or hanging on in a jam session, etc.
I have a masters in education as well as having spent many years performing, teaching in one on one and group settings both privately and at music camps and festivals. I play and teach bluegrass, old time, Irish, and swing jazz styles. I like my students to really enjoy playing music and their lessons as well as learning to become fluent in the language of music. It is not required that folks learn to read music necessarily, but it can be a part of the lessons if desired. I love to see my students able to continue learning and playing on their own, be able to hold their own at jams and on the stage is they so desire, or just enjoy making music for themselves. I have techniques that have proven effective to help get past jam phobia, that help folks learn to improvise who have not had any ...
