Juan Ruiz became involved in music at the tender age of 11. He learned to play Latin American percussion in his hometown of Caldas (Antioquia) in Colombia. At the age of 14 he was handed a clarinet not a saxophone like he wanted, so here began his clarinet study. While in Colombia Juan performed folkloric Colombian music, classical music, and latin american music in various festivals. In 2006 he earned a scholarship to study English and Music in the United States. Giving him the opportunity to perform clarinet and saxophone with prestigious groups such as The Pacifica Quartet and great musicians as Marco Granados, Oscar Stagnaro, Gregorio Uribe to name a few. As a composer Juan has some different pieces that were commissions by New England Conservatory faculty Kenneth Radnofsky and has worked as arranger for the New England Conservatory wind ensemble. His recent music is being performed in Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, China and around United States. One of Juan’s big challenges is to picture his homeland ‘’Colombia’’ in his music but also to create a fusion that is influenced by all the music from Latin America and the American jazz. Recently, Juan was invited to play with the famous Brazilian guitarist Guinga as a guest artist at the Berklee performance center. Currently Juan is working with guitarist Jose Allende on various projects around the Boston area and as a Resident artist at Conservatory lab charter school in Brighton.

Manda is a graduate of Baldwin Wallace University‚¬Ä¬ôs Conservatory of Music. She received a Bachelor‚¬Ä¬ôs of Music in clarinet performance, and is currently studying her Master‚¬Ä¬ôs degree in Arts Administration at Boston University. She has performed in multiple performances in the Chicago and Cleveland areas as a soloist, chamber musician, and in large ensembles. Her classical training and interest in popular culture is the perfect combination for students interested in clarinet and piano because her students can have the chance to play what ever music they want!
She began teaching beginners in high school, and began leading advanced players in sectionals and master classes. She continued, as a clarinet and piano teacher at the Joyful Noise Community Music School in Cleveland, Ohio. There she worked as a volunteer for the nonprofit organization with beginners. Manda currently works in fundraising at the Brooke Charter Schools in Boston and enjoys keeping up with her musical abilities with her students and performing in small venues in the area.

I am a combination of the strict, and the fun teacher. I believe the right combination of both will result in a successful learning experience. My students can expect to have their at-home-work written out in a journal, and will be expected to keep a practice log for lessons. We start at a slow pace so the student and I feel comfortable with each other, as well as with the instrument. With clarinet, we work on breathing and embouchure training. In piano lessons we work with finger exercises and scales. Each student is different, so I do not have a timeline each one needs to stick to. We work at a pace that is comfortable with the student, while still being a challenge. Over all, I want my students to gain an appreciation for music, and love coming to lessons each week.

Hello! I'm Lori and I'm working on my master's at Boston Conservatory for clarinet performance. I've been a public school music teacher for the past 2 years, but taking a leave of absence to continue my education. I hold my initial teaching license for K-12 instrumental, choral, and general music.
Growing up, I've played violin, clarinet, and saxophone mostly. I've had private lessons on clarinet, violin, and oboe. I studied at UMass Amherst where I received my bachelor's in Music Education and Music Performance with a minor in Psychology. I have performance experience in marching band, wind ensembles, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo repertoire.
In my spare time, I do enjoy messing around with technology. I do enjoy some video games and I have build my own PC from parts. I am in the process of integrating more technology in my music performance. I also have 2 cats named Bear (picture of him below!) and Chester.

I am an all around musician who loves to share my knowledge and passion for music with others. I find it just as important to know how to teach someone as it is to know about the instrument you are teaching.
As far as my performance experience, I have a Masters in World Music Performance from California Institute of the Arts and a Bachelors in Percussion Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY). I has also studied traditional Irish music at the University of Limerick (Ireland). I have been a guest drum set soloist with the San Diego State Javanese Gamelan and a guest musician with the Yelle-Belle Dance Ensemble in New York City. I have collaborated with such artists as Barry Goldberg (Bob Dylan), Bonnie Pointer (The Pointer Sisters/Solo Artist), James Galway (flute soloist), and Alex Del Zoppo (Sweetwater). I hav enjoyed performing with ensembles in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and REDCAT. My teachers include Gordon Stout, Alan Abel, Tim Genis, Tom Gauger, John Bergamo, John Joe Kelly, and Randy Gloss. I was the Principal Timpanist for the West Covina Symphony from 2008-2010. Currently I am the Studio Drummer at Melrose Music Studios in Hollywood and the drummer for Los Angeles based bands Lizzy Williams and The Learning System. I am also is a section percussionist for The Orchestra Unleashed, an orchestra specializing in Contemporary Classical music. I enjoy working with students ages 5-adult. I use a mix of method books, video, and audio examples in my teaching. I have a curriculum that I stick to, but I like to see what the student is interested in learning about as well and working that into our lessons. For drum students, I start every student on a practice pad first before moving on to drum set and each student must learn orchestral and rudimentary snare drum techniques even if they are just interested in drum set. Learning to read music and music theory are also covered during lessons and are required learning.
A first lesson for a beginning drummer will cover how to hold the sticks properly and an introduction to reading music. We will also watch video clips of famous drummers and we will discuss who your favorite musicians/bands are so that we can cover those interests during future lessons.

FOR THE SINGING STUDENT
Jimi will create a customized plan for you or for your child that is reasonable and fun on any of the instruments and subjects listed above. With a fun voice and music studio that includes a professional PA System, each student will have a fun experience singing and playing with the songs they love to sing and play using microphones and singing and playing over song tracks that enable them to work on their feel, pitch and groove. Younger students have enjoyed this experience as it gives a Karaoke and jamning kind of setting that allows each student to sing or play with the original recording and then sing or play it by themselves allowing them to build their confidence using a microphone and professional sound equipment. Jimi's elaborate music library of over 80,000 songs is also available to each student as well. Because of his medical training as a licensed and certified voice therapist, each student can be assured of learning to sing correctly and technically by using proven voice techniques that will enable each singing student to sing with power and expanded range without the danger of hurting or damaging their voice.
FOR THE SAXOPHONE AND CLARINET STUDENT
For the Saxophone and Clarinet student, Jimi uses 21st Century method books as well as the traditional methods he's used to get his students jamning and playing. A lot of time is spent in early lessons on teaching the student the correct way to blow the instrument to get a great sound. Typically, students will want to practice more when they sound great and a lot of time is spent on making a great sound to build their confidence and motivation.
FOR THE POP/ROCK PIANO STUDENT
Pop and Rock Piano Students will enjoy a modern approach to Piano that is not the typical Classical Approach that some children are disagreeable to. Jimi gets his Piano students to play modern pop and rock songs and students will learn how to jamn and approach the piano with modern pop music instead of the old school classical approaches.
FOR THE SONG WRITING STUDENT AND SINGER/SONGWRITER CAREER PATH
Songwriting is approached with song analysis first and then song form models are then looked at in the Old Style from the early 20th Century to the New Style forms used today. Then meticulous time is spent on Melody writing, Chord Writing, Basic Harmony and Lyrics. Jimi uses an approach to songwriting that is unique in its methodology by having the student believe that it is a LOT easier than you think it is. This confidence building methodology will have students writing songs in rapid time.
BASIC PIANO/KEYBOARD FOR SINGERS AND SONGWRITERS
For those students who wish to use the Piano as learning tool to help their singing and pitch, as an option you can take Basic Piano with Jimi after your voice development has progressed. The Piano is an awesome tool for singers and learning to play simple vocal exercises, notes and chords on the Piano will truly enhance your singing experience. Songwriters who do not play a chordal instrument like Guitar and Piano will enjoy this because they need to be able to play chords to become the complete songwriter that can not only write melodies and lyrics, but chords as well.

Currently, Jimi leads a professional Original Country Music group that has released a full CD and plays around the New England area. Jimi teaches at three prestigious private schools and music schools in Boston teaching students between Age 6 and 18 at those schools. Jimi is also Lead Voice Faculty and runs the Voice Program at one of those schools. Jimi's versatility and background has allowed him to keep on top of the music scene providing him with an incredibly large wealth of music knowledge that dates back to the Jazz/Swing era all the way up to the pop music of today. Jimi Z. was born in New York City and grew up in Lynbrook, NY only 20 Miles from the Music and Arts Mecca of the world in New York City. He attended the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division in New York City from age 14 to 17. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1978-1979 and then transferred to New England Conservatory of Music and received his Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Improvisational Studies as a double major in Voice and Saxophone Studies from New England Conservatory of Music.

Jimi is a Licensed Voice Therapist and has an incredible working knowledge of the Voice Anatomy and Physiology of the Voice. He has the ability to teach Speech, Acting and Singing. He also is networked well with some of the top Ear, Nose and Throat Doctors, Ornolaryngologists, and Speech Pathologists and works in tandem with them on Voice Rehabilitation cases. He is also aligned with top Ear Nose and Throat Hospitals including the Massachusetts, Eye and Ear Infirmary and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston. While the average student will not need these services from a voice therapy perspective, Jimi teaches a preventative singing technique that allows his singing students to learn to sing with power without pressing, pushing or belting on the voice so that his students will never hurt their voice or lose their voice. Jimi is Certified to teach the McClosky Voice Technique and uses other techniques including Alexander and Bel Canto in addition to his own philosophies.

Without question, jamming, singing and playing with the song is the ultimate training for a musician.

Jimi has a complete professional PA system in his Metro Boston Studio to allow the student to work on microphone technique and monitoring techniques as well. Whether you or your child wants a casual "for fun" philosophy or you or your child are career minded about music, Jimi will find a fun philosophy for each student that is not necessarily a "one size fits all" approach. The cool resources and gadgets in Jimi's Music Studio include a state of the art PA System complete with Pro Equipment that will simulate Stage Performance for students. It allows the students at any level to sing with Produced Tracks or Basic Karaoke with Microphones as well as Pro Settings. Jimi is also responsible for preparing Teens for Colleges and University Programs that know they want to pursue music as a career. Jimi has not only been successful in getting his teen students into the college or university of their choice, but has also put his students in a position to get them substantial grants and full college and university scholarships. Jimi has also created a successful TEEN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (T.D.P.) for young teens who know that they want a music career.
The T.D.P. is designed so that if a young adult works with Jimi for numerous years that they can pick a career path suitable for them. The T.D.P. can have a student with any one of three career paths 1) College/University Path where a large repertoire and portfolio is created for presentation to Colleges and Universities to not only allow a student to get into the Higher Education Institution of their choice, but to get them the scholarships and grants that they deserve so that they and their parents are not shelling out as much as $300,000 for those costs. The Higher Education Plan is built on a the development of an impressive portfolio of hundreds of songs, Demo CD, Demo DVD, Original Songs and the building of a Performance Resume in the student's teen years.
This Portfolio is then presented to Higher Education Institutions to allow a realistic chance of getting into the college of their choice and getting substantial scholarship and grant money. The success of the T.D.P. is amazing as many of Jimi's students have been accepted into colleges and universities and received scholarships. 2) The second T.D.P. is for those students and parents who simply want to learn what they need to move their music careers by doing complete development with Jimi directly. While Jimi is a graduate of New England Conservatory of Music and stresses a college education, sometimes it isn't possible or sometimes career minded musicians simply want a teacher to guide them in their career path without going to college or a university. THERE IS A SHORTER LEARNING CURVE FOR SINGERS (MONTHS NOT YEARS!!!)
One important thing to consider about taking Singing Lessons or Voice Lessons is that The Learning Curve is much quicker for both Adults and Children compared to the Learning Curve of other instruments like Guitar, Piano or Drums. There are certain aspects of learning to sing that make the learning curve happen within months and not years. This makes singing so much easier for everyone to learn in a timely manner. This can help with younger students who might be less patient and might have lower attention spans.
SINGERS ARE GUARANTEED TO EXPAND THEIR RANGE WITHOUT BELTING AND HURTING THEIR VOICE
Depending on whether the student is doing lessons for fun or for a possible career, Jimi Z.'s teaching philosophy stresses good vocal technique that allows the student to develop maximum vocal range to hit higher notes that they never could hit by relaxing the muscles in and around the larynx.
Students will learn good posture and breathing and learn how to execute singing by doing warmup/workouts that strengthen the correct muscles in the larynx and the abdominal muscles. The philosophy of execution on these exercises will seamlessly transcend into doing the same execution in songs.
Students will receive a WarmUp/Workout CD to practice to which is easy to follow. Songs will be introduced as soon as possible. Tone will improve as muscles strengthen. Students will later work on Microphone Technique, using Vocal Technologies,effects and really cool gadgets that are available in Jimi's studio via his product endorsements, Monitoring and the development of the student's own personal style are worked on by Pro Students.
Later in the curriculum, students can look forward to not only enjoying the benefits of range expansion and good tone because of the relaxed vocal technique, but then they'll be able to explore further range expansion through Passsagio Bridging to the Mix Voice and Falsetto register combined with microphone technique. Students will have the opportunity to use Karaoke CDs as well as a device which removes vocals off of conventional Music CDs so that they can sing in a Pro setting that is live and true.
Overall the methods Jimi Z. uses are The McClosky Technique(Jimi is Certified), Bel Canto Technique, The Alexander Technique for alignment and body mapping and The Jimi Z. Pop Vocal Approach to singing. Jimi Z. takes his approach with each student individually.
TYPICAL LESSON PLAN FOR THE POP PIANO STUDENT
Pop Piano Students can look forward to an unconventional approach not used by many classical piano teachers. This is a welcome idea that most younger students welcome with open arms because you don't need to play classical music or be trained classically to effectively play Pop or Rock as many people will misunderstand as being the norm. Pop/Rock Piano Students can look forward to learning basic fingerings to formulate melody on both hands. All students will learn major scales and then learn to finger 3 note chords on both hands. It is then that the students start to jamn to recorded CDs and keep up with the recorded version by playing simple chords and simple melodies. Later on in the development, if the student wants to take things to a higher level, improvisational studies can be introduced that are more difficult. A lot of time is spent learning things by ear and a lot of jamning is encouraged with simple songs first evolving into more challenging songs later on.

Studio has an electric piano/keyboard, full PA system, microphones and state of the art Vocal Technologies and cool gadgets professional singers use. Karaoke and Production Tracks can also be used and one of Jimi's really cool gadgets removes vocals off regular CDs if students can't find a Karaoke Version of song they're performing. This allows every student to sing with cool equipment in the best setting possible. Students may also play their songs through their IPODS and our WiFi capability allows us to download songs from YouTube as well as give us the lightning fast ability to download songs and Karaoke from the MP3 download service.

Jimi Z's complete Music Library which is updated monthly with 80 new songs per month has over 80,000 songs spanning from 1930's/1940's Swing/Big Band era through all decades into our current decade. Jimi's 30 Years of being a teacher since 1981 allows him to know a lot of songs from all eras. Jimi can accompany his student's lessons as well and help you with correct song choices from the enormous library of music available.

It all started out in a small town called Chatham, NJ where I spent the first thirteen years of my life. I remember loving music as early as I could walk and talk. I started taking guitar lessons when I was seven years old. Along with the guitar, came a love for singing and writing my own songs. When we moved to Pennsylvania the guitar came with me. Throughout my high school years, I spent hours playing with teachers, fellow students and at parties.
When I was sixteen every week for three years I would drive an hour into Philadelphia, by myself, to study with world famous Artie Singer. HIs students include such names as Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Al Martino, and Bobby Rydel. Artie co-wrote and produced two massive hit records “At the Hop” and “Rock ‘n Roll is Here to Stay,” both recorded by Danny and the Juniors. Artie was personal friends with Dick Clark and would bring him acts for his show.
While going to a Community College in Philadelphia the music teacher there took notice of me, pulled me aside, and told me about a great music school I should attend. He then sent away for the application and helped me fill it out. The next thing I knew I was in Boston attending Berklee School of Music! I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Jazz and Rock Composition, Arranging, and Guitar.
I had originally gone to Berklee intending to major in voice, however I had no luck with the vocal department there and ended up with nodules on my vocal cords. The damage was so significant that I had to stop singing during my four years at Berklee and turned to studying Guitar and Composition.
I tried every vocal teacher in town wanting more than anything to be a singer. What I found was no teacher could help me and it seemed obvious that even though they had the “big name” they didn’t know what they wt. I was losing hope. The combination of this roadblock and my persistence led me to the greatest thing that ever happened in my life....... I met Dante Pavone!
I kept hearing about a singing teacher named Dante Pavone. Since I had already tried everyone else, I decided to give him a shot. On my first lesson with Dante I noticed a big difference. My throat didn't hurt at all and a real voice was coming out of me. I was cured!
Dante’s studies were extensive and he had doctorates in voice, music history, psychology and many other subjects. He was the most intelligent; insightful person I have ever met in my life and not only taught me about voice but taught me many things about life. He one time told me that he had a more profound knowledge of all the fine singing muscles than anyone else.
Dante was the first; a “pioneer” in popular singing, breaking from the traditional operatic style. He taught, or was contacted by, such singers as John Lennon and Paul McCartney (Beatles), Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones), Aretha Franklin, Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane), Steve Tyler (Aerosmith), Peter Wolf (JGiles Band), James and Livingston Taylor, Faye Dunaway, Tom Jones, Donna Summers, Jonathan Richman, Julianna Hatfield, Andy Pratt, at their prime and the list goes on and on. Once John Lennon and Paul McCartney showed up unannounced at his door handing him a blank check! Singers from New York City Opera Company used to sneak away from their teachers and come to Boston to study with Dante who would cure their wrecked voices from their famous opera teachers they had in NY. Best Singing Teacher in the World!
I studied with Dante every day for the first couple of years and then two or three times a week after that for fifteen years until his demise in 1998. I never missed a lesson! He gave me over a four-octave range where I started with only a five-note one. Not only did he improve my pitch and tone, but I can now sing and scream all night, if I want to, and never have a single vocal problem. In fact the more I sing the better my voice feels!
One day at my lesson Dante asked if he could pass his method down to me. This has been a great honor to me and although many teachers try to emulate his method I am the only one with a certificate as seen above. Not only was Dante my mentor, but still to this day he is the most important person I ever encountered in my life and was my best friend. We were very close and he would spend hours talking to me at lessons not only about music but about many fascinating subjects and opened my eyes to many incredible things.
Thirteen of my songs were chosen to be in one movie called Getting Personal and other songs in the movies Fillbilly and Dykeotomies. My band has won world contests.
I have also studied piano, guitar, and drums extensively and teach all instruments. I studied for years with late great world renowned Charlie Banacos and John Horrigan. Besides teaching I am a songwriter, dancer, actress, film maker, audio engineer and producer as well. I can help you record your songs!
Since 1982 I have written hundreds of songs and have been performing and recording my own music in major New England and New York venues. I've also won awards for my band "Girl on Top."

Anyone Can Learn With My Method
It is completely untrue that some people are "born to sing or play an instrument" while others are not. Using my method, the most "tone deaf" can learn to sing perfectly in tune, the most nasal or unappealing sound can be transformed into the most beautiful resonant tone, and someone with "no talent" can become better than anyone out there.† With this superb method when you finish singing your voice will feel better than when you started! †All it takes is desire, patience, perseverance, and above all, practice. I also have a unique and very patient teaching style that can make learning any instrument seem easy. Anyone can learn with my method of teaching.
If a teacher tells you breathing is not important you should be concerned. Let me help you to develop solid breathing and correct singing posture. An instrument only sounds as good as it's built. As we build your instrument your range, strength, resonance and stamina all improve. There is no end to how good you can get.
The greatest thing about this method is it does not give you a style. You develop your own style! The student brings in songs they want to work on. Pop, rock, hip-hop, alternative, country, progressive, blues, jazz, swing, broadway, folk, rap, r+b, gospel, hardcore, screaming at the top of your lungs (if you want to).

Developing your ear is essential for any serious musician.† We start by learning to sing simple melodies and rhythms and as the student progresses move to more challenging ones.† Also incorporated will be learning notation and chord and pitch recognition.
