About Me

Brian has been performing for over 10 years. He is experienced in genres from hip-hop to classic rock, and delivers a style all his own. He is an honors graduate of Berklee College of Music with a dual degree in Music Production and Engineering and Music Business Management. Prior to Berklee, Brian was classically trained as a vocalist by Georgia Marandino. He fine-tuned his skills at Berklee with Joey Blake (performs with Bobby McFerrin). Brian learned guitar and piano from his father a semi-pro guitarist and an educator of educators. As a producer and sound engineer, Brian has worked with musicians spanning different genres and cultures including Grammy Award winning sound engineer Hector Ivan Rosa (Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, El Gran Combo). He currently offers voice, piano, guitar, and music theory lessons to students of all abilities.

I teach music students want to learn. I don't use books because every student learns differently. I have a very laid back personality but I am strict when it comes to practicing and learning the material from the previous lesson. After 3-6 months students will be able to play multiple songs, have a good grasp on scales and will be at the point where they can look at joining their first band with confidence!

Student focused learning is at the center of my teaching philosophy. At the beginning of the first lesson I want to find out the students musical goals, interests and motivation. I aim to meet the student where they are at, and find fun and engaging ways to teach them more about singing and music. After a few months of lessons students can expect to have further understanding of how the voice works (voice students), music theory, performance methods, technique and stylistic tools in their given genre. Students can also expect to have fun, my hope for students leave their lessons each week feeling uplifted, happy and confident.

In my experience, students benefit by learning from many different experiences that address their multiple intelligence e.g. logical, visual, musical, kinesthetic, verbal etc. When teaching I aim to connect skills being learnt with the context of performance while teaching to the students preference learning style.

Trust between my students and I provide the container for the learning process. As a teacher I believe it is my role to facilitate and engage in a reciprocal relationship that inspires the student to learn. My teaching approach is characterized by qualities of love and commitment to singing and music. I love sharing my passion, experiences and knowledge so that students may benefit and share the joy of music. I am flexible and laid back in my approach, while ensuring that each lesson is productive.

It is integral to the learning process to work incrementally, introducing new material skillfully and in achievable portions. This provides maximum opportunity for the student to have as many successes as possible during the lesson. I have found this way of working leaves the student feeling as if each task is achievable. As the teacher I maintain both long and short term goals with my students. In order to reach these desired goals it is important to see the bigger picture while working incrementally week to week.

About Me

I teach from a student's existing musical reality. Regardless of age, people have music that they like and love, as well as dislike. Through speaking with a student, I gather musical styles, genres, composers, artists, and songs that the student enjoys and I begin teaching this music to the student immediately, regardless of musical knowledge on their instrument. In the case of a beginner student, I customize personal arrangements of musical pieces for each student to match a student's current musical skill set.
I have found that a student has as much to show me about their own musical reality than I have to show about mine. I am more of a facilitator than a traditional teacher. I help set up goals as far as song selections, and various performance possibilities: sight-reading and technique, improvisation, and learning by way of ear-training exercises. I do not simply dictate my expertise to a student, but rather, I teach the necessary musical skill sets, theory, and background knowledge of their instrument in order for the student to play what they want to play. What my student may show me in terms of musical styles, artists, I in turn show musical styles, genres, artists and songs - both historical and present day - that relate to what a student has shown to me. It is a symbiotic relationship.

In addition to performing in the New York area, Paul teaches private lessons on piano, organ, guitar, and bass. Lessons include, but are not limited to improvisation, music theory, and ear training. Paul earned a bachelor of arts in English from Fordham University, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the master of arts program in music education form NYU. Paul has returned to NYU on two separate occasions as a guest speaker for the Music Business class, addressing both undergraduate and graduate performing arts and music education majors, sharing his own experience at NYU, as well as all aspects of his career being a band leader, freelance musician, and educator.

As a performer, Paul's various projects reflect his love for classic r&b and soul, funk, blues, and jazz.
His latest project as a leader involves the Hammond B3 organ, for which he has used both the classic organ trio instrumentation of organ, guitar, drums, as well as organ, bass drums, and also organ and drum duo.

For the past 20 years, Paul has also been a session musician in recording studios in New York City and the surrounding area. Paul has composed recorded for television commercials for Nike, Banana Boat, and the MSG Network, and has recorded for artists such as Michael Powers, Melissa Reaves, The 4th Floor, and The Hip Pocket Band. Paul's latest session work has been at Sliding Door Studios in New Rochelle, NY where Paul has been heard on various artist's CD's, as well as music and sound design for television shows such as CBS's "Criminal Minds", "Pawn Stars", "Cajun Pawn Stars" and "American Pickers", WE's "Big Easy Brides", and Velocity's "Saw Dogs".
