I have been a performer since high school (08-11). Marched all four years at Las Vegas High School playing top bass and then snare the rest of my school year while playing drumset on the side. Currently, I am in UNLV marching band, and I am also a part of an independent drumline called Vegas Vanguard Percussion Theater/Vegas Vanguard Entertainment Drumline. I have played cymbals, bass and snare at UNLV, and I have played only bass for VVPT/VVED. On the side, I also play drumset but not professionally.
UNLV marching band only does local shows at home football games and has the opportunity to do gigs. Gigs like playing with Phillips Phillips (winner of American Idol). Vegas Vanguard Percussion Theater is an indoor drumline that competes with other drumlines world wide. In the past, we have competed for three years and were bronze medalist the first two years and silver medalists this year. Vegas Vanguard Entertainment Drumline had the opportunity to do huge gigs with Enrique Iglesids, Nike and UFC.

This year (2013), I am celebrating my 25th year of playing drums professionally and my 15th year of teaching. I have loved playing the drums and making music from the first time I picked up a stick and connected with a drum. I have never wanted to do anything else with my life and I love sharing my knowledge about the power of making music and all the different ways that investing the time to learn an instrument can pay off in a person's life.
After playing in Jazz, Marching and Symphonic Bands in high school and studying privately for 2 1/2 years, I attended Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, CA where I earned my certificate in Percussion Performance. My time there expanded both my abilities and understanding of drumming but also gave me an understanding of the range of stylistic possibilities. With 20+ classes a week to keep up with my development was turbo charged! Favorite courses included Improvisation, Jazz Combo, Sightreading, Modern Drumset Styles, Latin Hand percussion, and Latin Drumset Technique.
Music has allowed me to travel to 40 of the 50 states. I have played a part in writing, recording and releasing 12 records and performed professionally over 1,000 times on a wide range of drums/percussion instruments. I have also been fortunate through music to meet many wonderful musicians and people from almost every culture around the world which expanded me socially and gave me an appreciation of both the universal nature of music and just how large and diverse the world is. I look forward to continuing to share all the skills, knowledge and inspiration that I have been fortunate to learn from so many great teachers along the way.
I also offer tutoring in Math and English through Take Lessons.
Drum, Music Performance, Music Recording
I am a full-time working drummer currently residing in Las Vegas. In addition to guiding up and coming drummers with their musical careers, I am working on music & soundtracks for film and television projects with platinum-selling singer/songwriter Mark Slaughter.
In April of this year I was inducted (for the 2nd time!) into the Las Vegas Rock Hall of Fame for my collaboration with "Ripside." I performed at the induction concert with fellow inductees Xcursion (Mark Slaughter, guitar/vocals; Kelly Garni, bass guitar). A picture of this performance is included in my "photos & video" section.
Notable mentors include: Irv Kluger, professional jazz drummer. I studied reading and drum set performance. Wally Snow (colleague of Murray Spivack), professional orchestral percussionist. I studied reading and a proprietary, specialized method of classical snare drum performance. Notable students of the Spivack method include Vinnie Colaiuta, David Garibaldi, Chad Wackerman and Chuck Silverman. Chuck Silverman, professional Latin percussionist. I studied Latin rhythms applied to drum set. Ritchie Garcia, professional Latin percussionist. I studied Latin rhythms applied to drum set.
I started playing snare drum at age 8. Two years later I got my first drum set and began studying with jazz great, Irv Kluger. I haven’t looked back since. I started playing music in the Wm E. Ferron Elementary School band. In my junior year in high school I co-founded Dream – my first “pro” gig. After high school, I joined the progressive-rock band "Ripside" and my journey into all things music began.
Hello, my name is Steve. I'm a graduate from The
Philadelphia College Of The Performing Arts with a BA degree in the
Performance of Jazz and Percussion. I started drumming at the age of 11
and first got the bug to play drums when I saw Buddy Rich, the worlds
greatest drummer on TV. Some of my favorite drummers are: Steve Smith
(Journey), Ian Paice (Deep Purple), Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews),
Steve Gadd (Session player), Jon Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and Ringo Starr
(The Beatles) to name a few.
Some of my other drumming influences are Travis Barker, Mike
Portnoy, Jojo Mayer, Thomas Lang, Joey Jordison, Carl Palmer, Max
Weinberg, Liberty DeVito, Kenny Aronoff, Steve Jordan, Bill Bruford,
Terry Bozzio, Simon Phillips, Phil Ehart, Alan White, Carmine Appice,
Anton Fig, Steve Farrone and the list can go on.
I have performed a variety of music in my career including dance and
pop, new country, blues, jazz, grunge, progressive, alternative,
classic and always straight ahead rock and roll. In 1986, I settled in
Los Angeles. There I recorded and showcased with original bands until I
joined up with Candye Kane and the Swinging Armadillos, who were a blues
band from San Diego and signed to the Antone's label out of Austin,
Texas. I recorded on three of Candye’s cds, "Knockout", "Diva La
Grande", and "Swango". I toured with the band domestically and
internationally playing club dates, television appearances and major
blues festivals over a period of six years. The band shared the same
bill with such greats as The Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Ben Harper,
John Lee Hooker, Johnny Lang and David Lindley to name a few.
In 2001, I joined SixtiesMania - A tribute to the 60's. It was a
full production show that had extended engagements in a variety of
showrooms around Las Vegas. I also traveled with SixtiesMania to Bali,
Indonesia to perform corporate events.
Finally, I performed & toured with Sony and Epic recording
artist Bertie Higgins from 2008 through 2011, who in 1982 had the hit
"Key Largo". We toured domestically and recently went to the Far East
playing in Malaysia and Singapore for a series of shows.
I am a professional with very good work ethics, great stage energy,
and am an excellent time keeper. I am considered a pocket player with
chops but is groove minded. I takes great pride in the integrity of the
music I perform. The audiences response to me has always been positive.
Younger fans say "He's so much fun to watch" or "He looks like he's
having a blast!" and the thing is ....
It wasn't till 2006 when I discovered my passion for teaching. I
love sharing my knowledge as a drummer and performer. I want to pay it
forward to the next generation of drummers. I have had great success
with a number of students who are now taking their drumming skills to
the next level. It gives me great gratification to see my students and
ex-students blossom into wonderful and masterful musicians. I hope to
continue passing on my knowledge & experiences to the drummers of

Paloma is an award winning graduate from The Musicians Institute has been playing since the age of 13. After picking up the instrument, she went straight to the stage and has been performing live for over 10 years. Being self taught, she decided to expand her abilities by taking lessons with such teachers as Berne Galane and master drummer Denny Seiwell. She has travelled as far as the Philippines and Canada with different bands. After several years of private lessons, Paloma went through a very difficult program called PIT at The Musicians Institute where she was taught how to expand her musical styles.
