Dance, Piano, Singing, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Songwriting
I have been immersed in music and the arts since before I can remember. The more I experience music, the more I want to share my knowledge and talent with people of all ages, from five year old kids to grandparents, complete beginners to professionals.
I believe that every person has a story, and no matter how small or big, music always plays a part, so here is my story.
I was born in the United States, but only lived here for 4 years before moving overseas to a country called Azerbaijan, where I lived with my family for 14 years. In Azerbaijan I studied at a private music and ballet school under the instruction of many well known Russian and Azerbaijani professional musicians, while also learning the language at the same time. After becoming fluent in Azerbaijani I continued to study music at home with my mother. She is a professional flute player, but I chose to learn piano and singing from her while still keeping up my studies in dance. At the age of 15 I had already performed singing and dancing on television and the radio many times.
When I turned 17 and graduated from high school I spent six months in Australia, Sri Lanka, and India, working with a non profit organization performing tsunami relief work. In India I also gained experience in teaching music and dance to large crowds of little children at the schools, orphanages, and relief camps I visited. Seeing the joy and life that these simple music lessons brought these children is what inspired me to continue studying music and begin teaching.
I turned 18 in 2005 and moved to Seattle to study music at Seattle Pacific University. I specialized in vocals and music technology, while also teaching lessons on the side in both piano and vocals. During my four years in Seattle I played in several bands, and really developed my skills as a song writer and recording artist. After graduating with my Bachelors degree, I moved to San Francisco in 2009 to pursue my music here. It was hard to leave my students that I had in Seattle, but now I am 26 years old and am currently writing and recording my own music and playing shows all over the bay area.
Now I am looking forward to having knew students to teach and share my passion of music with here in San Francisco.
Singing, Music Performance, Music Theory, Songwriting
I've been singing, performing, songwriting, and studying voice for 17 years. I attended Berklee College of Music, where I studied Voice/Vocal Performance, and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from Musician's Institute in LA. I've been teaching since 2006, and work with a wide range of contemporary genres with a focus on rock, pop, country, folk, Americana, R&B, blues, and soul. I like to take a "back-to-basics" approach to voice by helping students develop the core aspects of breathing/breath control, correct vowel placement/vowel tuning, and a focus on muscle memory as it relates to stretching the cords. I've been told my approach is simple yet effective, and a unique blend of classic concepts with a practical/modern approach to getting in tune with one's one unique voice. Currently a gigging musician and songwriter in SF, I am in the trenches alongside many of my students, which gives me a unique perspective and empathy for the many stages of personal and career development as a musician. I have a lot of first-hand experience with the music business and what it means to manage a band and a DIY-career. Another area I specialize in (and which is probably the nearest to my heart!), is performance anxiety. Having overcome performance anxiety myself and gone on to be a bandleader and gigging musician, I have a close relationship to this and take a special interest in helping students overcome their own fears and anxieties, identify their own voice and identity as a singer, and taking the steps to develop that.
Mostly, I aim to debunk the mystery that the voice can be shrouded in, and change it from being elusive and temperamental to something that students can feel in control-of and at-ease with. I've taught a wide range of students, from young kids to a Marine (true story!), so am comfortable dealing with an equally-wide range of goals and voices.
Bass Guitar, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Songwriting
I have been a musician for over 20 years. I have a BA in Music & Sound Recording, and am equally comfortable in the studio as I am on the stage. I currently lead my own band which plays all original music and I have released two CDs of my own music, in addition to playing and recording with many local acts. I also write, record and produce music for TV and movies. Let's just say I wear a lot of hats.
I love music, and surround myself with it at all times. There are very few styles that I don't like or don't listen to, and I try to stay current as much as I can. I play a number of different instruments besides the ones I teach, including harmonica, piano, organ, drums and percussion. I also have been singing for as long as I can remember.
I believe anyone can be musical, even if you don't play an instrument. Music is everywhere, and we all tune into it, whether we know it or not. I hope that we can learn something about music and each other, then throw it all aside and just jam!

Hi there, and thanks for viewing my TakeLessons profile! I am excited to be a part of the team in Berkeley, CA.
I started teaching lessons while in music school for Classical Guitar in 1996. From 1998 onwards, I played with a variety of musicians from Africa and Latin America, as well the as great American traditions of gospel, funk, jazz, and bluegrass. All the while, I continued to study music theory and composition, on my own and in private lessons with both well-known players and local professionals. Flamenco and Indian Classical music have also been great interests which I am still involved with.
Though guitar is generally my "go-to" instrument, I often use a MIDI keyboard for composition, and studied/performed on bass for 10 years. The last few years, I have begun to develop my voice as well.
Since 2006, I have been teaching music theory and composition at Ex’pression College in Emeryville. This is a digital production environment for the arts, and my students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are musicians/aspiring musicians, and some are primarily interested in working with technology; but all are audio enthusiasts and love music!

Greetings Groovy Guitar Student!
Thanks for checking out my lessons. My name is Judy G., aka Groovy Judy. I'm a guitarist, singer, songwriter and performer. I've been playing guitar for 35+ and teaching private and group lessons for 10 years. I have also taught ukelele, some voice, and electric bass. ***Please note - I'm located on the Peninsula, so the areas I serve are: Millbrae, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City, Atherton & Menlo Park.***
I work with a lot of kids (as well as adults) and beginners. I'm extremely patient, and I enjoy getting brand new guitarists up and running with proper techniques and good habits. My teaching style/philosophy is to get my students playing guitar as soon as possible in an easy and fun way. I focus on basics such as tuning, rhythm, proper pick technique, strumming, reading guitar tab and/or sheet music, and playing songs. I tailor my lessons to the student so it's fun for both of us. I work with beginners and immediate/advanced guitarists. Basically anyone that wants to learn how to play or brush up and enhance their skills. Styles I teach are: rock (classic, indie, punk) folk, pop, reggae/ska funk, blues, r&b, country, some finger-picking, and a bit of classical. I can teach you any song you want to play whether it's rap, rock hip-hop or a piano piece. I will find a way to do it and make it fun. :-)
My style is easy going, but not lackadaisical. I take teaching seriously and do my best to make the student feel comfortable. I give my students weekly assignments that I ask them to complete. However, if a student doesn't work on their assignment, I don't criticize or condemn them. I go over the assignment with them and gently remind them to play and work on the materials I've given.
I love teaching, music, and sharing my gifts with others.
Thanks and I look forward to working with you!
Judy G. aka Groovy Judy
