About Me

If you want to sing or act for fun or as a profession, or are auditioning to get into a particular high school of performing arts or college or have auditions, I can help you. If you have a little one who is, clearly, a performer, send them in and we will have a blast!
I have been singing, recording and acting my entire life. I am fortunate to work as a singer and songwriter. I teach all ages and levels and I love it. I will collaborate with you to bring your performance to life.
I believe every person has a place in my studio.
Just one thing about me. I'm really nice. I teach from a place of thinking anything is possible. I don't crush dreams.
I have been in show business so long that I know anything IS possible! I am generous with what I know. I have a lot of experience in performance, recording, songwriting, and film work and will help you in any way.
I studied at Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (CCM). In New York City I was under the care of opera teacher, Leona Matthews, as well as with Word Baker at the Herbert Berghof Studio. As an adult I worked extensively with Mark Monroe in San Francisco and Los Angeles. I currently work as a coach, recording artist and as a composer.

*** Lesson Details ***
I will work with you to discover your authentic singing voice or to bring your full self to your work as an actor. My background in acting and singing performance is Method. I will give you technique, which will include vocal exercises to secure a strong foundation (pitch, tone, breathing, vowel production, etc.) for your voice. There are basics we all must learn and practice and they work. You can expect to be able to sing for the first time, or to sing better, or to finally feel great about your vocals! You can work on songs you would like to sing or I can assign material for you to work on. We will decide. And, more than anything, we're going to accomplish what you want and we will have fun doing it! Please note: If you are a parent bringing me your little one I will ask you to join in if you wish as your child will be allowed to experience many instruments as they wish including grand piano, drums, cello, electric guitar, electric bass, electric keyboard, ukulele and other various instruments. Emphasis will be on allowing little ones to experience the love of music as I offer beginning structure.

Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Blues Guitar, Guitar, Harmonica, Music Theory, Songwriting, Ukulele

About Me

I have played on tour with several professional bands, playing rock, pop, blues, African, metal, and country. I now perform live in various bands and record original music as often as possible. My music has gotten airplay in many countries.

I started playing guitar at age 9, and recorded 2 singles in the LA area by age 14. I was a music major throughout High School and College. I also learned a lot by educating myself at the Brand Library in the Los Angeles Area, which specializes in the arts. I specialized in advanced music theory and improvisational techniques.

I have enjoyed teaching music lessons since 1978.

I custom tailor a lesson plan to fit your individual needs and goals! I can teach you songs you'd like to learn instantly when I hear them on your iPod, mobile phone, cassette or CD that you bring in. I can explain musical theory and concepts many different ways to make sure you understand them. I am very friendly and patient.

Sometimes I might inject humor into the learning process to make it an enjoyable learning experience, and to help you remember the important things.
I love the satisfaction of seeing my students grow musically proficient and and seeing the JOY that it brings them. Many of my students have gone on to become professional. I am well-versed in many styles: Rock, Pop, Blues, Alternative, Country, R&B, Metal (and a few plastics and wood as well).

*** Lesson Details ***
I will develop a personal lesson plan for each individual student. During your lessons, I might cover topics ranging from learning how to play, starting from the basics (if you are a beginner), to choosing music that will inspire you on your level, to improving your technique, ear-training, music reading (if that's what you'd like), reading and understanding tabs (if that's what you'd like), knowing what it is that makes certain chords and notes sound good together for writing your own music, as well as guitar maintenance and adjustments, getting a good tone, amplifier settings, effect pedals (settings & placing them in the most effective order), recording tips, and where to get a decent pizza.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room or Studio, both very comfortable. Amplifiers, guitars, effects pedals, bass, ukulele, balalaika, drum set, PA system and recording equipment.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide guitar, bass, or ukulele and amplifier when necessary, teaching tools. The student provides their guitar and paperwork I give them.

About Me

I have been a professional performing musician and teacher for going on a decade. I've studied jazz guitar and film scoring at Berklee as well as bass and composition at Lewis and Clark. I've toured across the country several times over, playing everything from jazz to funk, metal to pop. More importantly, I've been teaching privately since high school when I'd bike to students houses around my neighborhood. Since then I've taught at the local branches of School of Rock in Portland, OR, Boston, and New York, teaching privately, coaching ensembles, directing student concerts, and teaching theory workshops. I also have been working to integrate cutting edge digital technology into my teaching practices should students wish to explore contemporary processes. Music has long been my life's love, and my highest hopes lie in in sharing its rewards.

I also have spent terms on and off teaching middle and high school English, History, and Spanish and have moonlighted in kitchens and bars. I freelance as a writer of both fiction and journalism.

No matter what you are interested in, my lessons are wholly student driven. I work with you to determine your goals and how to best achieve them through fun and accessible exercises.

*** Lesson Details ***
My primary interest with any student regardless of age or instrument is to cultivate a higher appreciation and understanding of music, both as a listener and a participant. As the hopes of any student is the mastery of songs, my teaching style is largely founded in learning songs, no matter the difficulty level. While I have a myriad of exercises and drills to build technical prowess, I work with each student to build a curriculum as unique as they are, they're own musical tastes the seeds from which we will grow our goals. Not too far removed in years from my own beginning days, I know it's no fun to try and play what you wouldn't listen to in the first place. As basic technique is developed I introduce students to a wider range of influences that best suits their interests and aims. All I ask from my students is that they enjoy their practice, however strenuous or laid back it may be.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home Studio Desk with amplifiers (no drum kit)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own instruments and amplification. I can loan students both for a lesson, but not for take-home practice.

*** Specialties ***
Funk, Jazz, Metal, Blues, Rock

Ken W. Concord, CA

Subjects Taught

Audio Engineering, Blues Guitar, Classical Guitar, Classical Piano, Composition, Country Guitar, Ear Training, Flamenco Guitar, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Piano, Pro Tools Software, Songwriting, Ukulele

About Me

At age 12 Ken picked up a guitar and fell in love with the instrument. He began with an obsession with Metallica and related bands that later evolved to a big interest in classical and jazz music as well as an interest in music theory.

From 2008 -2010 completed the music program at Diablo Valley College in June of 2010, which includes extensive coursework in Music theory, Piano and Guitar. Since 2011 Ken has been a Jazz Guitar Performance Major at Cal State East Bay where he will complete and receive a BA in music. There he has studied Classical and jazz Guitar performance with world class musicians.

"Music has many different levels and the beautiful thing is there is a place for everybody. I have spent a lot of time throughout my music career going “back to basics” in order to become a better musician. We are all capable of becoming great musicians and just because someone can play faster than you doesn't necessarily make them better. Music provides everything from healing power to just plain fun for the human spirit so I always encourage students to go at there own pace and work within their abilities."

*** Lesson Details ***
20+ years experience as a musician and teacher Ken has taken self taught route and the lessons route. "I believe 100% that being taught by someone who has sufficient experience really provides the roadway for a solid foundation whether you are planning on being a pro, just for fun and all levels in between. The combination of self-discipline and a good teacher are a must to have as a musician."

Amongst many other approaches of teaching music, I try to instill the 3 most lacking areas most musicians usually have to begin.

1. Sight reading: Unfortunately most common with guitarists! Tablature is a somewhat useful way to start but reading music will open many doors and opportunities for any musician

2. Collaboration: A teacher provides one way of collaboration as well as a band or an ensemble at school or in the community.

3. Improvisation: I provide a music theory background and I have a method plan for chord progressions, and help with learning the entire guitar.

I take step-by-step approaches towards giving a student encouragement and instilling music appreciation. I am very organized so every lesson will be documented and we will work on specific areas of fundamental development. Most of all have fun! That what gets us playing music in the first place!

I look Forward to meeting you!

Acoustic Guitar, Audition Prep, Christian Gospel, Country Singing, Guitar, Jazz Voice, Music Performance, Music Theory, Singing, Songwriting, Vocal Training

About Me

I love teaching! I love that everybody has different learning styles, experiences, and goals. I've taught singing, vocal technique, and music performance in a wide range of contexts both in the US and the UK for 10 years. I studied the fantastic Estill Voice Training System in both places, which has led to my work in vocal recovery.

From being an instructor for several years at Queen's University in Belfast, UK to working with individuals and community groups, I've built an understanding of how to help you the learner meet your goals in rock, pop, jazz, and even in recovering your voice after a voice injury or illness. In addition, I'm a well-seasoned musician so can provide industry experience as well as guitar, songwriting, and performance coaching for auditions, gigging or recording.

So whether you're a beginner or a seasoned professional, we can get your voice to where you want it to be!
